I'm tired of standard Orc Warlords. That's all there is to it. This model was a converted 40K Ork Boss originally but I wanted a Fantasy Battle one. I ripped everything off this model and simply used it as an inspiration for this. Most of this guy is custom built except for the core body.
First off, the base, it's pretty simple, just a slap of custom poured plaster. My Orc army is done in a brown rocky terrain so it was perfect. I wanted to stay away from the cliches - corpses, skeletons, holding heads, and stuff like that because it just seems like a cheap way to get ratings. My intention with this is to make it very natural. Rocks, grass, maybe some gravel, and so on. No corpses or excessive blood splatters.
Now from left to right. The chain whip is made up of a number of series of individual chunks of curved chain. I broke them in a number of places so they'd look incredibly dynamic even though they're all generated from the same piece technically. On the end of each I put a hook. I thought about something big and scary knife-like but it seemed overkill. The little hooks give all the scare it needs. As far as the connection point goes, I made a blob of green stuff and then textured it so it looks like a leather wrap around the chains. I assumed there was a connecting ring and have only one chain coming out of the bottom of his hand. The effect is extremely stunning in person at least. The arm itself is the original arm, minus the gun, and with some green stuff to have it pulled back like it is (originally it was set to be static and forward).
The shoulder pad has been extended simply because I thought it looked cool. The spikes on the back are 2 spear tips (left looking like spear tips because I wanted a rough looking orc) and 2 sets of curved horns on front, one set on back facing opposite. They're put on haphazardly on purpose, again, they're orcs. I then put an Ork skull hanging off the shoulder plate where a bullet used to be. (the only cheese on the model). The point of this was something like "This was the only Ork that ever didn't do what I said, you get me boy!?!?"
Finally, the ax on the right. It's custom built from 4 swords believe it or not. I carved the hell out of them and made them all match up pretty well. One was thicker than the others, hence the layer of green stuff. I put a spike on the end just because it looked nice, and a strip of toothpick done the blades, to look like an archaic method of attaching it. There are no rivets on this piece - I didn't want them there because I want him to look rough as I said. The ax blade itself looks amazing. I've taken chunks out of it and given it a rough-hewn texture but simply scarring it in perpindicular to the shaft.
The Wight there is simply given as a size comparision. Oddly, it doesn't do it's job as it's closer to the camera. This model is easily twice as tall (not including the rock) as other Orcs. His axe blade is far larger than any human model and many monsters. It's really enormous and very unique in my opinion, let me know what you think though!!!

ZaPhOd 28-Oct-02 #17858 | | Rating: 8 Very cool stuff Justin! Just the term Orc Warlord signifies several things to me. Brutal and Mean. Thus, your addition of the "great hooked flogging device" really is my favorite part of this work. Looks very good and I wanna see YOU paint it up for the next Toadstool!!!! | |
