dauber22 26-Jul-06 #187084 | | Rating: 6 WEll, everything's already been covered pretty well. I would suggest though, that if your serious about improving hang around on the forums. It'll give you the chance to picjk the brains of some excellent painters and helpful teachers. The Submissions, Paining & Cinversion, and the WOrk in Progress Forums are all great sources of information. Genereal Discussion is also a great source; it's just that nobody's quite sure of what WHile CMON is itself great, I think it's the Forums that really make it a marvellous resource.
And remember, its not unheard of for winners of local painting contests to get in the 5 to 6 range on CMON. DOn't let teh scores get you down. |

Ogrebane 25-Jul-06 #187003 | | Rating: 6 I thinks its all been said. I like the work youve done on the base. Just clean up the edges. Good job. |
hakoMike 25-Jul-06 #186929 | | Rating: 6 Hi Ole. I've struggled with the 5-6 range for a while, and keep in mind that what qualifies as "tabletop" here is better than most minis you'll see on a table. For improvement, try looking for things in the photos that look unintentional, like the shading between the fingers on the right hand, and smoothing them out. The camera catches things that the eye misses, and things that seem good from 18" can look like mistakes in the CMON post. Keep it up! Focus on constant improvement, and don't be discouraged! |
supervike 25-Jul-06 #186909 | | Rating: 6 I agree with the others...Looks decent, but you need to thin your paint a bit more, and work highlights and shadows in more gradually...Your camera is awesome though, shows a crisp picture! |
johnboyjjb 25-Jul-06 #186903 | | Rating: 6 A blue fade probably isn't the best background for this guy as it dilutes his skin tone. Also, some of the wrinkles across the mid-section could do with some darker shadowing - a good dark blue wash/ink might help. |
generulpoleaxe 25-Jul-06 #186894 | | Rating: 6 looks good ole. to make the rock look more natural start with a medium grey, dry brush with a lighter grey. with washes add some blobs of green and brown here and there. when that is dry give it a very thin black wash. once dry give the edges a light dry brush with a kahki brown.
for the grass use an olive or other drab green wash over it. when it is dry give it a very, very light dry brush with bleach bone.
this will help the grass look more realistic.
hope this helps.

DaN 25-Jul-06 #186890 | | Rating: 6 Agreed. I would have considered this a WIP (Work In Progress) - for the reasons mentioned (Lack of shading etc)
You have the base colours down already (Although maybe a little thick in some areas - most notably the vertebral spines)
I would recommend having a look through the articles section of CMON and looking at shading and inks |
airhead 25-Jul-06 #186884 | | Rating: 6 Ole, I don't see anything wrong with the mini, but it does not stand out as a true character mini. Your blending needs a bit of work to smooth the transitions. Mix the two colors together and add an additional layer of blending. This requires that you thin your paints a bit more than you currently do. White teeth are generally a no-no as well. Ivory to a light brown depending on the hygene of the model. Same witht he claws. Finally, highlihgt the metals. The copper is nice, but a bit of gold on the hot spots would help.

Dragonsreach 25-Jul-06 #186880 | | Rating: 6 Hi Ole.
Just as you requested I'm putting my 2 pennworth forward. Overall there is nothing intrinsically wrong with the mini, but there are a few things you could do with working on. Your brush control is relatively accurate, you've not put colours in the "wrong" place or overpainted where you didn't intend. However the horns could use a stronger separation from the rest of the skin. (Called Blacklining. but doesn't have to be Black) Also your mini's lacking in any real shadow tonality, for example if you'd darken the eyesockets the eye would stand out a great deal more, if not "Pop". The highlight colour you've used is Ok, but the blending between the basecoat and the highlights is somewhat stark and obvious. On the rear of the mini are the majority of Scales. You've chosen a dark green which isn't showing too well agains the Blue. (There's an old adage, Blue & Green should never be seen without a colour in between.) Which basically mean that they are too close in terms of the colour theory wheel and don't really help the overall look of the piece. These scales would really benefit from a bit of blacklining around them to give them a good separation and then a brighter highlight.
The base is a cood concept and is reasonably done. Overall this is a standard tabletop mini, nothing to be ashamed of and would not look out of place in an army. |
