This was my entry to the Warlord Large category for ReaperCon's painting contest in May 2007, and took third place in its category. This was a fun piece to do, in part because of how different it is to what I usually paint, both in size and subject. I had a lot of fun with the bark in particular, and added glazes of different colours to different areas to try and keep it interesting. The patches of lichen are not part of the sculpt, I added them by gluing on flock prior to priming. The colour choice was inspired by a couple of trees in my yard with teal lichen, although it's a paler and less saturated teal than what I used here.
I enjoyed working towards a nice woodsy feel on the base of this. The leaf scatter is tea, dried out after steeping. That particular flavour is vanilla caramel, so it included some little bits of stick and such that had a nice variety and natural look. The larger mushrooms are GS, the smaller are pinheads. The little treestump and rock on the back came on the base of the Sasquatch, which I removed since I needed him for a city scene. The tiny plants are brass etched foliage. I'm not sure what I was thinking at the time, but it's pretty obvious to me now that I needed to highlight the leaves much further up. Although I usually don't repaint contest entries, if my husband gets his elf army together I might go ahead and work a little more on this one for him to add to it.

I'm not old fashioned and really like how you painted the bark and the leaves. I think it is refreshing to see people trying new ways of painting. Great job. |

Nice choice of colour for the bark, it's good to see some experimentation on this front, much better than boring brown. The red leaves also add an extra level of interest and work well, though i agree they need more highlighting. As always with your models the base is great and full of interesting details. |

He's very unusual and interesting the way you have painted him and I like him. But I'm very old fashioned and might have liked him even more with brown bark & green hair!  | |
