Sister Catharine is one of a handful of Battle Nun sculpts that Werner Klocke did for Reaper a few years back, and like most of them displays some signature Klockian features. ;-> I purchased a couple of these soon after I started to paint, with the idea of painting them up for a friend of mine who enjoys 'nunsplotation' films. I had gotten this one prepped and ready to go when he opined to me that he really only liked miniature dioramas, so she got pushed to the back of a shelf and forgotten until I was getting ready for ReaperCon 2007 and needed a couple of models to bring for practice in classes.
While at ReaperCon I studied some techniques of other artists with the aim of experimenting with a style that's a bit more dramatic in contrasts and a little less fiddly to produce than how I usually paint, and practiced those ideas on Catharine. I took the opportunity to practice a metallics technique I learned from Rich Stedman at GenCon 2006 - working up in layers from a base of ink to which metallic is gradually added, so the shiny effect is most concentrated in highlight areas. I like the effect quite a bit, and it allows for some interesting experimentation between the various available colours of ink and coloured metallics. Lastly I tried a new technique for static grass (starting with a foundation of flock and more extensive drybrushing on the grass itself) as my static grass has been looking kind of blah lately. The flowers on the base are Woodland Scenics purple flowers.

Vhaidra 29-Aug-07 #233745 | | Rating: 9 Love the face and the colour choices. Skin looks pretty smooth and the highlighting makes her clothes look a little bit like shiny silk I think. |
jarhead 12-Jul-07 #229477 | | Rating: 9 Really underrated. Wisely chosen colours and a formed character of this girl. Really like the tones you used for the skin, the leather and the clothing! Little problems on the eyes - i guess - so it`s an 8.5 from me... keep it up and don´t let you bring u down of some sniping nerds... keep up the good work |
3rd Eye 05-Jul-07 #228825 | | Rating: 9 Great face and good colour choice. Those purple metallics are really interesting and work well with the overall colour scheme, i might give that technique a go myself. I think maybe the gloves could have had a little more highlighting but i'm just being ultra-picky. Keep up the great work, Wren. |
