I've wanted to paint this sculpt for a whlie, and a convergence of a Hallowe'en contest at Reaper and a challenge to paint OSL (object source lighting) in round two of the Iron Painter proved a good spur. The figure comes in a pack with a fancy coffin, treasure chest and tall candalabra, but I wanted the OSL to come from a different direction than above, so I grabbed a cool tombstone from another Reaper pack and added some candles to it with GS. The wax drippings and flame were made with Woodland Scenics Water Effects. The flower is a dried flower with parts from a different dried flower glued on for leaves.
My idea with this was to paint two different types of light - the warm orangey light from the candle, and a bluer, more desaturated zenithal moonlight. With both, I mixed the colour of the 'light' into the shading and highlight mixes rather than using glazes. I ended up having to use some glazes on the gravestone, as I only used yellow in my highlight mix on the lighted side of it, and it needed a little bit of orange and red to look right. The shadows on the dark side all used a mix of black and P3 Coal Black, a greeny-blue dark paint. A bit of that combo was mixed into the base colours used on the light side to get the basecoats for the dark side. I used a mini flashlight to check the location of the light reflection and shadows before painting them on the base.

Bill 12-Dec-07 #244287 | | Rating: 9 Absolutely amazing OSL - definitely some of the best I've seen. But somehow the face looks odd to me, kind of as if it was freehanded on? I don't know, it just doesn't seem to work. The rest is lovely. |
