Merry Christmas (or Happy whatever winter festival you celebrate, if any)!
I painted this for a round of Wyrd Game's Iron Painter contest, in which painters are paired up each round with only one from each pairing progressing to the next round. The theme for this round was 'Seeing Red'. A theme of painting red in late November immediately brought all the unpainted Christmas miniatures I have to mind, so I thought this was a great opportunity to paint something fun and seasonal. I also wanted to incorporate the saying of 'seeing red' to mean angry, and came up with this scene.
The Mrs. Santa figure is one of the versions of Mrs. H. put out by Hasslefree Miniatures. The naughty little critter is a Waggamaeph from Crunch-Waffle, a very mischievous and funny breed of creature. I sculpted the wrapped presents from Sculpey, and carved the unwrapped cardboard box from a piece of cork. The wrapping paper is painted tissue paper.
Red can be a challenging colour to paint (and to photograph!), so I tried to use this opportunity to improve my technique. I started by adding in a lot of shadows, as I've seen that done on other red pieces I admire. When I started on the highlights I began using orange and planned to work up to yellow as is the usual way, but I just didn't like the look that much. So I made a mix of a creamy off-white and yellow and mixed that into my base red colour for the mid range red, and a similar mix of creamy off-white and orange to highlight up the dark reds.

Fantastic Paintjob again!! Great color choices, very clean and smooth painting and pretty good job at all the freehands. Besides the fantastic paintjob I think you have created a great diorama too. |
