Although I was interested in Dungeons & Dragons throughout high school, I didn't get the opportunity to play seriously until I was in college. In 1990 or so I was looking over the miniatures in a game store. I was surprised to find this one, which was very like how I envisioned my character Wren the Bard in a lot of respects - kinda plain with a bob hair cut, wearing gladiator-style armour skirt, and armed with a sword. Although we didn't use minis in our game, one of the guys was kind enough to paint up the mini on the left for me. (I did ask him why he didn't paint eye dots, and he said they wouldn't be seen at that scale. ;->) The figure was sculpted by Julie Guthrie and dated 1988.
Fast forward to 2003, when I decide to start painting miniatures as a hobby. My husband dug out a box of figures he had bought in the late 80s, and there amid the blobby knights was another copy of this sculpt. I set it aside with the idea of painting it one day when I got much better at painting. When Gary Gygax passed away a few weeks ago I got to reminiscing about my days playing D&D, and decided to revisit my old character and give her a bit of a facelift. She had a psuedo-dragon familiar named Trin, and I found a tiny Iron Wind Metals familiar that suited quite well. She definitely is a little smaller than a modern figure, and there are a few rough areas on the sculpt, but I had a lot of fun doing this.

Theomar Pius 08-Apr-08 #255190 | | Rating: 9 That's great. It must be very satisfying to you to go back and repaint this one. If I could make any suggestions, it would be to sprinkle some dirt on the base.
Great job. |
3rd Eye 06-Apr-08 #254877 | | Rating: 9 Brilliant to see some of the older stuff again, brings back fond memories. I had a friend who had this mini when I was a kid ( showing my age, lol ) and it really shows what a little TLC can do for a sculpt.
Excellent colour choice and the little details on the base really bring it to life. |

pez5767 03-Apr-08 #254533 | | Rating: 9 What a treat and a rare find. Makes me want to go dig out some of my old Grenadier favorites. I'm sure Gary G. would be proud to have inspired this. Great classic model with a modern lovely paint job... fun the way it should be. |
Vhaidra 03-Apr-08 #254524 | | Rating: 9 I also like the warm earthtones a lot and I think the base turned out great too. Most of all I like her facial expression that is really a lovely, lifelike smile. I hope the sculptor will see it. |
Hawk Talon 01-Apr-08 #254302 | | Rating: 10 If I was the sculptor, I would thank you.
There's a lot of love in this painting and in preserving the old one.
That's the right way.
Of course great job too. |
treide 01-Apr-08 #254291 | | Rating: 9 She's a beauty, and a lot more "realistic" than your typical Reaper bombshell female character. The earthy tones on her clothing are great. I keep telling people these old minis look good if you just take the time to paint them well, and you proved my point! The only critique would be to deepen the shadows on the familiar - he looks a bit uniform. |
Amazon warrior 01-Apr-08 #254288 | | Rating: 9 What a great idea! You do realise that this is how I imagine you look now? Well, it's that or the nun! lol I like that the colour of the dragon carries over onto the character. I think the dragon himself could benefit from a lil more shading, tho. |
squidders 01-Apr-08 #254283 | | Rating: 9 What NSA said - old minis like this aren't really covered in nice detail or smooth surfaces - great job on this! | |
