I’m not entirely happy with my dark skin paints, so I downloaded some pictures to use as inspiration in mixing my own colours. The skin in one of the pictures had a purplish cast, which was probably due to the lighting for the photograph, but I liked it and thought I’d experiment with it, and this was the result. The skin has been painted as a fairly cool colour, with the other elements on the mini painted in warm colours. The crevices in the ground use a similar colour to the skin. The dirt on the feet and some of the dustiness of the ground was achieved by applying ground up pastels to the piece.
I painted this figure to enter in Wyrd Games’ Total Testosterone contest. I really like the musculature on this guy, the legs in particular. So even though he wasn’t classic testosterone, I thought he was more than masculine enough to submit. I was quite pleased that he won co-Third place in the Alternative category. These are different photos to the ones I entered in the contest, as I’ve been working to try to get truer colours in my pictures.
I did another experiment with a warmer dark skin tone that I’ve also posted.

3rd Eye 23-Dec-08 #279044 | | Rating: 10 Wow, the skin on this one is awesome! I've never seen anyone do this type of skin-tone on a mini, it's got that ashen tone to it, and you've captured it perfectly. I especially love the highlighting on his upturned face and the dusty feet. I think IF this model has a flaw though it's that the skin is so good it upstages everything else, lol. |

Primeval 19-Sep-08 #270411 | | Rating: 9 I love the skintone! The leather color works well with the skin and the leopard skin as well. He looks like he stepped out of an Imaro or Dossouye story (heroic fantasy set in an alternate Africa by Charles Saunders, heavily influenced by Robert E. Howard), so he gets a Barbaric Splendor ! |
treide 17-Sep-08 #270189 | | Rating: 8 I think the purplish cast to his skin is perfect! My only suggestion would be to pick out some areas on the leopard skin in white highlights or edging to add contrast. | |
