We've all read in the fluff about how monumentally huge some of the larger ork warbosses can get in the world of Warhammer 40k. However, the warboss models from Games Workshop are pretty tiny when compared to these tall tales. Even Ghazzie, illustrated as being almost 3x as tall as an imperial guardsman, is a relatively tiny figure when it comes to being amid a horde of Boyz. I wanted to make a warboss that had some serious stature to him, and this model was the result.
This model began it's life as a Dire Troll Mauler, from Privateer Press. A number of hours were spent 'cleaning up' the original model with a dremel, which was used to file off the rocky protrusions from the skin on the whole body. Next came some slight reposing and modification; the dire troll mauler had ridiculously huge, meaty hands, and only four fingers, so the whole arm from the elbow down was hacked clean off, to later be replaced with the bionic fisticuffs you see above.
I am not a very talented sculptor - I get by, for the most part, but my greenstuff work is pretty mediocre at best. Fortunately, I had help FROM the best - two forumers at The-Waaagh.com, named Nozeminer and Gizmo respectively, were a great help in the greenstuff parts of this model. Nozeminer in particular iwas a great help most of the musculature you see on the upper torso, which was added to help cover up and smooth over marks from where the spikes on the dire troll were originally dremelled off. This also had the added benefit of bulking the model up even more, and muscling him to an absurd degree.
The fists are primarily styrene, with the main wrist area being made from a couple hacked-down pens I got from the dollar store (which is why one is red and one is black in the pre-paint photo at the bottom). The fists themselves are simply styrene rod with a paperclip pin run through each finger to help pose them properly. On the back of each wrist is a warbike's dakkagun, cut down and shortened to fit more comfortably in that space. I was going for a sort of 'Marneus Calgar' joke with the shooty-gauntlets - the mek who designed Gargrim's fists must have seen Calgar in action once or twice and taken inspiration from there.
The fists themselves are simply named 'Da Fistz 'Uv Gork 'An Mork', and are labeled appropriately so that Gargrim himself does not forget which one is which.
The grot riding his shoulder is his good buddy and official 'Sekretary 'Uv Waaagh!', Urk. Urk is not only Gargrim's banner runt, but assists the giant warboss in tactical maneuvers ("Hit dat 'fing! No, dat uvva one, dere!") Of course, it would be preposterous to suggest Urk has any sort of control over the giant warboss, but his advice is usually helpful enough that Gargrim can avoid getting stepped on by superheavies.
He was painted primarily with washes. I'm a bit of a rubbish painter, but the new Citadel washes make it so damn easy that I just sort've thinned out the Thraka Green and put on a couple coats until you have what you see before you. By starting with a pretty light base coat, I avoided most of the tedious highlighting work, though I did make a rough attempt at doing it in a couple places.
Gargrim has his own rules that we have designed and house-tested. They're quite a lot of fun, and put him at a cost and power approximating that of Marneus Calgar in the 5th edition rulebook. These rules were also voted 'Best Special Character' over at Warseer by a slim margin, which I am thrilled about:

You can find his datasheet here:

I encourage people to try playtesting him and would love to hear feedback!
Outside of Apocalypse, I still get a fair bit of use out of the model. He is mounted on a magnetic base - a 40mm magnetized inside a 60mm. I regularly field him as a Dreadnought on the 60mm base, which I think is appropriate given that he's larger than even a Space Marine Dreadnought. Alternatively, I can use him as just a regular Warboss (with power klaw) by removing the 60mm 'rim' and just running him on the smaller 40mm base.
He's a fun centerpiece for my army, and draws a lot of fire just based on his size. He's great fun to play with.

Micha 11-Jan-09 #280672 | | Rating: 9 Very impressive, that´s really a huge boss, I really like the muscles and the powerfists; of course he would have benefited form a more complex paintjob, particulary on the metals, but generally he looks nice; the only part I do not like is the face, he somehow looks more dumb then vicious or angry don´t know why but that´s my impression. |
killer bitz 11-Jan-09 #280670 | | Rating: 8 love the idea and all, but the face doesnt look orky enough |
Gefahr 11-Jan-09 #280660 | | Rating: 10 Well... in my point of view he´s just great!
