Commission job for a customer. The reds were a *pain* in the butt to blend - for some reason I find reds, especially Vallejo's, hard to work with. They go on quite streaky for me. Doesn't help that I try to apply them over black! The rose on the horses flank turned out reasonably well (Im terrified of adding 2D detail).

funnymouth 09-Sep-06 #194671 | | Rating: 8 im with dfd on this one - reds are easier to blend with browns. my score would be a point higher but her bottom and mhe bottom of the midsection of the horse have poor hilights. |
ThriKeen Priest 26-Oct-02 #17626 | | Rating: 8 Very striking colors, somewhat Spanish-looking to me. The rose looks great! I'm working on the same piece right now, and I think the staff should curve upwards more, (look at the pouch hanging from it.) Would like to see a close-up of the face... |

nadinbrzezinski 27-May-02 #5086 | | Rating: 8 I know the feeling about working reds on black primer, guys thanks for the ideas. I usualy ink it before I paint it, with the base ink. Will try brown ink or brown paint before the red with my next model |
Dragon Forge Design 04-May-02 #3971 | | Rating: 9 Very nice work.. sometimes it helps to apply a layer of dark brown befor your darkest layer of red..especially if your useing a black primer coat. Ive neven found adding a little dark purple or Dark Blue to your reds will help also.
The rose siloute is also a very nice touch! |
BlackGuard 01-May-02 #3837 | | Rating: 8 Really impressed by the rose. I never thought that a dark, red rose painted directly onto a red background would work visually but you really pulled it off! |

#1686 | | Rating: 9 I have painted a lot of reds in my day, and I find anything darker than Scab Red (Citadel Colors) with a tiny tiny bit of black mixed in usually ends up being impossible to blend properly. All you have to do is try several thin layers of the same color to get rid of the streakiness. Love the rose by the way. |

#1548 | | Rating: 8 Reds are a pain, although one suggestion I had heard from a friend is never blend red into black, always into deep browns instead, might want to try for future. By the ways, paint job is great and so is the detailing! | |
