This was my entry for the 2003 Toronto Golden Demons, under the "Lord of the Rings Movie Scene" category. It placed third (bronze).
I really like this piece. I tried to make a dramatic scene without making it huge or crazy or cluttered. I overheard one judge mention how it was nice and "clean" and told a story.
The Ringwraiths were painted an ethereal looking blue-white ....I wanted them to look quite seperate from the setting, very otherworldly.
Frodo is a Merry (or Pippin?) figure which I converted. I grinded off his scarf and sculpted a vest (complete with tiny buttons!) in place. I also painted a ring on his finger (can't see it in the photo, its on the far hand).
Im reasonably pleased with the terrain effects. I placed gloss in various spots on the ground, because in the film the ground appears to be wet and not just dirty.
I did this piece in a personal record time for a demon entry. About 4-5 nights, couple hours a night. It was a last minute decision to create this entry.
(started Aug 6th, GD was Aug 16th!).

I saw the piece in real life and was blown away at first glance at how well it captured the feeling of the scene and the "ghostly" feel of the Ringwraiths. It deserved the bronze and beat out some heavy competition (I was convinced theat the "dawn of the third day" diorama was a sure winner until the other entries came in later in the day). |

Rosco 18-Aug-03 #49906 | | Rating: 7 I think you need to post some close ups of the ringwraiths. They are not really that impressive looking from a distance. I thought that they were black in the movie? | |
