Grey Order Empire Battle Wizard with Necronomicon.

Grey Order Empire Battle Wizard with Necronomicon.

This is the first thing I finished after coming back from Games Day UK 2013 and also the last project that I managed to finish before the new year. I always come back super inspired and ready to kick it up a notch after seeing all the amazing stuff people have been working on and entered into Golden Demon each year!

I had this idea of a wizard floating mid air and combined bits from a bunch of plastic kits and added a touch of green stuff to get the look I wanted! Check out the unpainted version of this lil guy here:

The plan was to attach the cloak to the arch of this base I’d built using parts from Games Workshop’s “Ruins of Osgiliath” Scenery kit a while back. Check it out here:

After reading up on Wizard’s from the Grey Order I decided against flashy freehand symbols on the cloak etc. As Grey Wizards are very secretive I thought it would fit better with just a clean anonymous grey robe. I played around with a couple different  greys for the various cloths with a kind of burgundy purple on the inside of the cloak for some extra color. I then built from there and added the turquoise gem’s, vials of green liquid and a muted green bookmark to spice up the color scheme even more.

The book was a lot of fun and a real challenge! I had this idea that I wanted him to be holding a copy of the Necronomicon and since I’d chosen to leave the actual wizard pretty clean here was my chance to go crazy with freehand details! I read up on any references I could find about what an actual copy would look like and also looked up some pics of the Necronomicon that was used in the Evil Dead movies (both old and new) and it helped me decide kind of what I wanted it to look like.

The cover was painted like old worn leather that had been stitched together. On the front I painted the Necronomicon symbol. I was heavily inspired by Martin Footit’s wizard and spell book from White Dwarf #355 but didn’t want to blatantly steal the entire design. So I painted both versions of the elder sign and added some cool borders and bits making sure I used a lot of color in the page design (something I’d noticed and really liked with Martin’s book!)

All in all I’m very happy with how it turned out, gluing it to the base and seeing it all come together worked just as easy and well as I had hoped it would and it looked pretty cool having him float above the ground like that!

Hope you guys like it!

I saw this mini in real life the other day and it really has me questioning reality. It is so insanely detailed and perfectly painted that I'm a little depressed that I will never be this good. Supreme work!!! A perfect 10!

Stunning model, I think the "lack" of freehand work on the cloak just brings more attention to the smooth blending and makes the viewer appreciate the smaller details such as the stitching on the book.
