This is one of two figures from Reaper's Learn to Paint Kit #2. I followed the paint guide for the most part, although I used colours other than the recommend black for the leather parts, and I didn't use any washes on the skin or clothes. For the scroll, the guide said to use a black wash. This did not work at all for me - it would blacken the etched letters just fine, but also greyed down the parchment part. I tried it twice, with paint and ink washes, and finally just gave up and painted on letter-squiggles.
I think she turned out pretty well, and I'm particularly happy with her face, though I think a lot of well it turned out comes down to the sculpt. I washed down the metals a lot, particularly on her skirt, as it's woven rather than solid metal.
One thing I'm unhappy about is the paint seems a bit grainy in spots. I suspect this is either dust or fibers from my wet palette, but any tips on how to avoid graininess of any variety would be most welcome!

In the future:
Make sure you shake the primer well.
Make sure both the mini and the primer is at room temperature.
Also make sure that the humidity is not up to high as well.
Any of these can reduce the qulaity of the paint job and create grainyness like your mini here.
Hope this helps.

Kazar 06-Nov-03 #59929 | | Rating: 6 Working with a wet pallet is good. The grainyness is probably because you didn't thin your paint quite enough. I find the reaper paints to be a bit grainy in nature and they can be finicky for thinning. If you're using parchment paper for your wet pallete then there shouldn't be any worries about fibers in your paint. If other materials.... Can't help you then.
Having never seen the Reaper Learn To Paint Kit I don't know what they tell you to do exactly with the scroll but it seems as if the wash is a decent idea. I guess I'd do a brown wash tho' and then go over it all with a thinned down midtone and then rehighlight slightly.
Anyway, looking good. Keep up the hard work. Your brush work is very accurate. I look forward to seeing your progress in the future. |

DrClarke 06-Nov-03 #59847 | | Rating: 6 I'll give this a solid 6. Some people might think otherwise, but I feel it's definately more than a 5 'standard table top quality'. I say this because the choice of colors work, though they seem a bit muted and I can see nice detail in the eyes and I can actually see the book in the book case (two different colors) I would rate it up another notch if I could see some definiate shades/highlights though or maybe some type of blacklinning might have given it some needed contrast or 'breaking up'. | |
