Tau XV8-11b Polypheme Crisis Battlesuit.

Tau XV8-11b Polypheme Crisis Battlesuit.

I was inspired to build and paint a Tau Battlesuit after working alongside Sten Frödin on our GD projects for last year. I was working on my Giant Slayer and Sten on his XV88 Broadside. Check it out here: http://stockholmwarpaint.com/post/67376055529/ The plastic XV88 was fairly new and truly an awesome kit that looked like a lot of fun to build and paint! I decided to start my own Tau project after I got back from Games Day.

We'll I didn't start it right away and a lot of other projects worked their way in between but here it is, finally finished!

I wanted to build an experimental suit-mark that I imagined was in it's field testing stages. I mixed parts from the resin Tau Commander kit and the plastic XV88. I spent a lot of time converting the weapons so they fit under the arm rather than along the side, something I've noticed on a lot of the Forge World suits and really liked. After some posing I ended up with a pretty badass looking suit that I named XV8-11b Polypheme Crisis Battlesuit. Here are some pics of the suit before I started painting it: http://stockholmwarpaint.com/post/73816040011/

After I'd decided on the pose I knew the base was probably going to be a pretty important part of the piece. It started out like any normal base but quickly kind of took over and became a little project in it's own right! I built and painted the base before finishing the suit. I made sure I took a lot of pictures whilst working on the base and was able to post a simple step by step picture-post of the entire project! Check it out here: http://stockholmwarpaint.com/post/77322550351/

I decided to paint the suit and drone with the turquoise sept markings of the Bork'an Sept and in the classic winter tundra color-scheme found in Codex Tau. Bork'an has a high number of experimental weaponry and engineers amongst their ranks mainly because Bork'an is the home of many of the Tau's universities and research facilities so I felt that it was a fitting sept for my experimental suit to have originated from. I also thought that the color-sheme would work well with the base. I figured that they probably wouldn't repaint the armor at this stage, moving from one terrain type to the next preforming different field tests there simply wouldn't be enough time.

I wanted everything on the base to be painted in greenish-brown hues leaving the suit and drone to be the only cold colors on the piece to emphasize their alien nature. They're obviously out in some desolate swamp running tests unaware of the slumbering Necrons embedded in the shallow swamp!

I had a lot of fun working on this piece, I challenged myself to try new techniques and work with new materials and learned some new tricks that now are stored safely up my sleeve I hope you like it, if you have any questions or comments don't hesitate to post them! Superb! Probably the coolest Tau battle suit I've ever seen.

True awesomeness! I love it. The light distibution on the suit and the drone, all small detailing end sratches on the armour - just great! But the base is what makes this piece absolutely unique. The realism of the scene, water efect under the drone and those marvelous two leafs on the water... perfect. And "underrated" a bit in my opinion, deserves 9,7.

This is probably the best base work i´ve ever seen. Even without the miniature, it would be a true work of art. Everything is extremely naturalistic and just fits together. My favorite part: the small leaves on the surface of the swamp - incredible.... The Tau suit is incredible too, of course, but the eyes are constantly being drawn to the base. Spectacular!
