This model has been painted as my first commission for Slave to Paint and was a good opportunuty to paint a very nice model. Even though I have the Dante model myself, I've not actually painted it!
The brief called for a relatively standard appearance. The main differences being the pale-skinned death mask and red/blue/green tri-coloured purity seals. Two things I probably wouldn't have done without prompting, however I think the death mask especially looks very interesting.
I also had to perform some rhinoplasty on the model! When I received the model he had a flat nose which I proceeded to mutilate when attempting to 'fix' it. a tiny bit of greenstuff and you can't even tell!

Palocles 05-Jan-04 #67874 | | Rating: - thanks for your comment Brother Az but i disagree. the death mask shouldn't really be gold, despite obvious posable misreadings of it. i think the brief to include the flesh coloured mask was the best part about it. the model looks totally unique and better, in my opinion, than the traditional colours. if it should look less flesh like then it should be white like one of those porcelain masks that thespians hang on there walls. |
Brother Az 02-Jan-04 #67454 | | Rating: 9 This is beautiful. One suggestion, I think the Death Mask (face) should really be gold because to the untrained eye it looks like a bare face. It definatly needs a gold face maybe a lighter shade than the rest of the body but only slight. |
Avicenna 01-Dec-03 #63090 | | Rating: 9 Who needs NMM when you can get real metallics looking as rich as this! keep it up!! The main thing in favour fo NMM is it is fashionable, which in itself is no bad thing, but people have become very blazé about metallic paints now. I like it! -Peter |
Palocles 27-Nov-03 #62693 | | Rating: - Thanks, Luke. This model was pleasure to paint and i like the result achieved by the specifics of the brief. py; the armour was done the 'normal way', i started with beaten copper, for warmth and high lighted progessively thru the two golds (all GW paints) and used a tiny bit of mithral for a proper shine. (i might have used a colour between copper and gold but don't remember), a final 'lining in' with thin black ink created proper definition between seperate gold sections, in the ankles and between fingers for example. i did a little bit more on this model after the pic was taken, mainly a gloss varnish on the gems, so they're really shiny on the finished Dante. Merc ogryn, sometimes i think about trying NMM, then i change my mind and stick with the real stuff. one day i might actually try it out though. thank you all for your feed back. |
profondo rosso 25-Nov-03 #62553 | | Rating: 8 Ooops, by the commission I meant that I got Palocles to paint Dante for me - heck, I'm not to this standard! So, full credit to Paolocles -an inspirational paint job! *bows down* |
mercenary ogryn 25-Nov-03 #62528 | | Rating: 7 It´s nice... but try to change metal one for NMM, it would give you a better paint and help you to improve, its difficult but the results are excellent. GOOD WORK special in blue and the head!! |
py11 24-Nov-03 #62348 | | Rating: 9 wow! I really like this one. Maybe you could explain me how you did that marvelous gold effect ? |
profondo rosso 24-Nov-03 #62343 | | Rating: 8 Well, ok, this was a commission for myself (in fact, the lil' dude is staring at me now!) so I may be somewhat biased...
In all honesty there isn't anything I can truly fault here. While true that my brief was simple, I didn't want to go overboard with any excessive extra details or conversions.
The effect of the armour is great - the metallic gold is a nice (and rich) chestnutty tone and the inclusion of red/crimson shoulder pads is a nice touch, too. Dante can look a bit overpowering when done completely gold all over but this has enough little details to not be completely striking. I also think that the highlights have been done in a subtle enough manner to not look garish. The death mask was an idea that I wanted to see done in a decent manner and this has been pulled off exceptionally well - the white eyes and blood work amazingly well. Well done! | |
