An Archaon conversion, i originally bought this model to do a fun conversion and put on eBay. The model stayed unused for some time before i decided to go to Golden Demon France. Looking at last years winner in the Cavelier category i decided it was worth doing and Taking along.
To start i had to remove all of the chaos icons and spikes, this included spikes growing out of the horse and it's mane, the Slayer of Kings and the skulls around Archaons neck aswell as another few odd bits like on his stirrups.
Starting with the horse i made the caparison. Using lead sheet, bent and shaped for movement, to make the lower part and the upper part was made from green. The srcolls were made from the 'sprue' parts of a brass etched leaves sheet (the ones from the base), twisted and curled and attached to the back of mini shields also of green.
The knight received an important head swop and replacement sword and shield, made from plasticard. The head is a plastic one from the Knights Errant, i think. Additional detail was added to the sword hilt and pommel and to the breast plate to replace some of the removed chaos icons with bretonnian ones.
The colour scheme i had decided on awhile before actually finishing the conversion. It was originally going to include red stripes on the yellow diamonds but i left them out to avoid the model looking too busy. Unfortunately the colours lack real strong impact, they look good but don't stand out as much as i wanted them to. The model took three or four weeks the convert and another two or three to paint. The base is made from two Warmachine bases 'back to back' with some plastic tube between.
After A small disaster only days before GD France while trying to attach the model to the base he was ready. Remembering last years winner i was confidant of a place... unfortunately there were alot of other very good painters entering this category too and i was pushed off the podium in to the finalists somewhere. I'm happy with the result and feel that the winners deserved there awards, the better models won. Next time i wont use previous winners as a bench mark.
Comments, especially regarding colour choice, welcome. Thank you.

beestieboy 04-Dec-04 #112925 | | Rating: 10 Phenominal job and congrats on a well deserved win!! This is my favorite Brettonian lord conversion. You've given me some great inspiration for mine. The only nitpick I have, is that the black lines of the swords on his shield and the matching ones on the horse aren't completely and laser straight. Now that is such a small thing and it's not stopping me from giving this a total 10, but maybe laying a straight edge down (ruler or something) might have helped to steady the hand so you couldn't tell they were "hand drawn". Knowing the scale, I still think you must have the hands of a surgeon to get them as good as they are. The color choice is good I think. Good contrast and a very bright regal look. Again, congrats and way to go! |

Just taken this guy to Gamesday UK (2004) and entered him in the Fantasy Monster category. Guess what? He won the Bronze! Those of you who follow the GD winners will already know this though... I´m very pleased with him now. |
profondo rosso 28-Jun-04 #91389 | | Rating: 9 Hey Rich, about time you put this up on CMON! Great miniature with some nice conversions. I personally think it's a shame that you didn't win an award for this dude but I haven't seen those who did. I think the choice of colours are absolutely fine, although I gotta agree with the others about the freehand work. The blending on the horse is superb and I love the base. Overall - great work |
Palocles 08-Jun-04 #88537 | | Rating: - Thanks Banshee and Cerrid'. I don't know if i want to try painting shadows yet. I know i should have left dark lines too. My 'mentor' Babalonia always says to start my colours darker and this one needed more contrast. I'm thinking of putting up another picture, with better lighting and a better angle. Also i'll put the Grot up as soon as possible but want a different angle for that one too.
Cheers. |
Cerridwyn1st 07-Jun-04 #88455 | | Rating: 10 Man, that's gorgeous! The blue shows a little green on my screen, too; might just be color adjustment. At GD Atlanta, one of the people in the GD area suggested that I base my colors in a darker shade, and leave a very fine line of the darker color between the partitions. What happens when the eye looks at too colors side by side is we insert a darker line. By paiting one in, it accentuates the color differences. I was kind of upset with myself, as I'd painted my colors on a darker base, but didn't know to leave the line. Hope this helps. |

the conversion is lovely, so so well done..the heraldic is great and the free-hand work can be more worked but is so good too.. the face seems to be so good and the horse is the most i like of it. the movement of the bard is perfect and the base is great too..the worst thing is the seals..beacuse it has no shadows and it looks a bit plain and plane.
but in the overall evaluation it is a great mini.
i want to see your winner entry as soon as possible!!.
cheers !.
best regards richard!!!
paint paint paint!!!..we will see you in england and spain!!!!!!

Franc' I wish i could do better freehand! But thats about as good as i get so far, i'll try something batter for my next Demon entry. BTW the yellow looks less green IRL. Lets not mention last years winner, it was... very happy. Your english is fine.
Hfam' He is the duke of the Bretonnian Carcasonne, i'm not sure if it is spelt the same as the real one, i did it in french 'cause Brets' are and it was entered in france. BTW, love your city, i went there a few years ago, it's SO cool. |
Hfamily111 07-Jun-04 #88343 | | Rating: 9 Really good, but one thing:
It's CARCASSONNE not Carcasonne with only one , i know this coz it's the Frenck city where I live
Julien Lapeña from his castle of Carcassonne. |
franciuus 07-Jun-04 #88316 | | Rating: 9 i love your modelling work; very realistic and amazing... i'm not sure of the colour painting: the yellow looking a little "green" and i think the freeands can be more detailed. i think that your work can be very amazing if you blend a little more the blue-yellow colour! this is in my very little opinion! say that, great work! (the conversion is IMO better than last year GD winner!) ..sorry for my english! | |
