This was my entry to the Samurai Showdown. This is a beautiful sculpt, which I very much enjoyed painting. I did a fair amount of shading and highlighting on the dress, adding more after the dullcote, but I'm not sure it's as evident as it should be. I was going for an aged ivory look on her hair accessory, and I'm pretty happy with that.
The base was made using a rubber stamp on DAS self-hardening clay. I believe this was a suggestion from Enchantra over on the Reaper Miniature forums. I wanted her to be in a palace type setting.

wscarvie 29-Oct-04 #108181 | | Rating: 7 Very nice. I'd have given you an eight, except for the highlights on the hair (a bit too grey...not sure what to suggest though), and the base. While it's a good idea, that knotwork pattern is distintly Celtic. It seems out of place with a Japanese figure to me. |

You were successful with the hair piece, but I think the hair itself could use some different highlight--she looks like she's graying right now. Maybe a red, or a brown, would be better? |
Dragonsreach 19-Oct-04 #106816 | | Rating: 8 I agree that the dress highlights look as if they have not photographed as intensly as they would appear to be in real life. Two things I would suggest Darken the inner sleeve of the figures left hand and perhaps the green is a little too plain. You might want to consider a little freehand or just edgetrimming the gown with a Yellow or gold contrast. In any case the painting is lovely and smooth, but the face...........is stunning. It looks like a younger Elizabeth Taylor. Very well done on this. |
No Such Agency 19-Oct-04 #106720 | | Rating: 8 The base is really neat but as you say the highlights on the dress seem to have been lost in the photography. I believe you that they're there though Her facial expression is fantastic too - "Lady Oh has crossed me for the last time, I suppose I'll have to destroy her reputation now..." | |
