This was my entry to the GenCon 2005 painting competition. I was very pleased that this piece made first cut, even though I was too subtle with the effect I was trying to create. I also won third place from Iron Wind Metals (aka Ral Partha) on a judging of all the minis made by their company that were entered. This lovely sculpt is from their Arcana Unearthed line, which represents races and classes from Monte Cook's variant D&D player's handbook. I sneaked a peek at the book and learned that a Greenbond is a sort of a nature mage. One of my main goals for this mini was to work a bit more with colour and get out of the earthtone rut I've been in.
When I first started looking at this mini, I figured I needed to do something about the outstretched arm. I tried posing with familiars, and spellbooks, and a few other things, but really I thought what it most looked like she was doing was checking to see if it's starting to rain, so I decided to go with that. It's a little harder to see in the pictures, but there are circular raindrop ripples in the pool she stands beside. There are also drops of water on the flowers and leaves, and in the palm of her hand. The dots on the ground and her dress are meant to look like water spots, but I see now that I applied these far too evenly to really capture the effect. I still like the starting to rain idea, and if I find another sculpt it suits one day, I may try to use what I've learned here and do a better job of it.

Wren 28-Mar-06 #172946 | | Rating: - The flowers and their stalks are a dried flower called gyp. They came dyed pink, but I highlighted the blooms and painted the stalks green. The leaves are those most usually sold as forest litter or ivy leaves, which I think are seed pods from the birch? tree. I painted those, then used CA glue to attach them to the flower stalks. Unfortunately the CA glue and water effects mean these plants are very brittle and fragile, so I wouldn't try this again on a gaming base or one I wanted to send through the mail. |
ShadowOni 28-Mar-06 #172819 | | Rating: 10 Beautiful mini, a subtle and nice colour transition. The base is also very nice. I can definitely see the ripples of the rain. Nice flowers... how did you do them ? |
Bobinator 20-Mar-06 #171914 | | Rating: 9 The transition of colour is remarkable, such fine painting skills, the subtle change in hue fits this figure nicely, I only wish I had the same abilities then all my figs would look like visions of beautiful flowery lovelyness instead of the half arsed attempts they are. Great work. |
Beelzebrush 16-Mar-06 #171383 | | Rating: 9 The blending of the change in colour is brilliant and the colours work really well (in a girly sort of way ). Superb work!! |
