CoolMiniOrNot Forums - GW Foundation Paint Set
  • GW Foundation Paint Set

Rumour a few months ago had it that GW were going to introduce a new paint set, at first it was thought that this would be a Masters Set and then it was aclaimed to be aimed at the beginner.

Well acording to the latest UK edition of White Dwarf which came through the letter box this morning it is a Foundation Set.

Consisting of 18 colours GW have this to say about it
"It promises to revolutionise how we hobbyists paint our armies. Foundation Paints are a complement to our Citadel Colour range and, have been specially formulated to be applied straight over a black undercoat. That goes for normally difficult colours such as red and yellow too.
The secret of the paint is that it is packed with pigment meaning you get smooth coverage every time."

It goes on for a bit more as well also claiming that "an entire army can be painted with the ranges 18 colours and that they usage significantly accelerates the rate at which you can finish your models" and that "the paints come in a new paint pot which incorporates such features as a built in tab, and special locking hinge."

Colours look to be as folows:
Iyanden Darksun, Mechrite Red, Orkhide Shade, Macharius Solar Orange, Tallarn Flesh, Adeptus Battlegrey, Mordian Blue, Calthan Brown, Astranomican Grey and a few others I couldn't make out from the photo.

Make up your own minds, I just thought some of you might like to know

Here is my thread elswhere about this set

In short, I tried them. The whole box of them. Yes, they do exactly what GW promises - overlay any color at 1:2-1:3 dilution in one layer.

Skeeve you said they were $2.50, so about £1.50 a bottle (unless they round up)

But...how much paint do they have in them? The P3\'s have about 20ml for £2 and Vallejo\'s have 17ml for £1.40.

Don\'t know about bottle sizes but GW are selling the set for £30 that is about £1.70 a bottle (rounded up).
Given Skeeves info and a sale price of $45 for the set and the current exchange rate £ for $ that makes the UK a rip off once more...what a surprise.

I think I corrected it later on. They are $45 for set of 18, Vallejo doesn\'t have nearly as good coverage (I am using mostly Vallejo so it was easy to compare). Can\'t say about P3, . As for the price. This paint is not for everything - it is foundation paint. I doubt people will be using it a lot. Personally I will be using it for quick color shifting. Say, you want to make two-color banner with contrasting colors.

I didn\'t check exact volume but it looked like standard GW volume, whatever it is, 12ml?

Hehe, locking hinge sounds very professional but rather inconvenient - it is too tough. You almost have to use both hands to open them. Bottles look spiffy but as cumbersome as any flip-type bottles. Difference in price between US and UK I don’t understand either. If they really sell them for £30 it almost sounds cheaper to mail-order them in US

I visited GW Oxford Street on Saturday and the guy there seemed very excited about them and claimed they\'d be \"great value for money\". He mentioned the price but I\'d switched off by then He also seemed a bit confused because I asked about brush-on primer and he thought this was what I wanted.

I\'m going to break ranks from the anti-GW picket line and try some of these.

If they\'re shit my mate\'s kid can use them to paint pictures of spaceships....

If its going to save me a lot of time painting less coats for the same results then I\'m all in. Especially if its more cost effective for me *Jumps into the queue behind Munkie*

One big p1sser when GW are a UK company. One can almost forgive Privateer Press, Reaper etc for exchange rate *hiccups*...?

The feature they appear to share with P3 is this whole liquid pigment thing...ie no separation and better coverage. I\'ll give \'em a try. If red and yellow works I might even invest in some

These colors look okay for the most part, there\'s a few more of the Vallejo Model Color style shades in there, but they aren\'t supposed to mix with regular acrylic paints very well. So blending hilights won\'t work...

This is basically for coverage of basecoats only. You can layer over top all right but if they can\'t blend then I\'m not gonna waste my time with them.

The only thing I\'ll be curious to see is whether or not these new colors will be replicated for the standard paint line. The specific wording I\'ve seen in emails was kinda confusing in that regard.

If they make both types of the new shades it\'ll be fine, it not then they\'re gonna be relatively useless IMO.

P3 is a new line of paints by Privateer Press designed by Mike McVey.

I\'d give you a link, but I can\'t seem to find them on the privateer website.

Why would you want to use them for blending? Use the right tool for the right job and all that. If they take time and effort out of painting over a black undercoat, then GW are onto a winner.

It\'s a shame that they only seem to be parrying and countering the moves other companies are making these days though. Useless bunch of procrastinators
