• How to make snow bases

    Equipment needed

    - PVA Glue. (wood glue)
    - Bicarbonate of soda.
    - An empty plastic cup.
    - A mixing container. (We use the tops off undercoat sprays)
    - A mixing stick. (We use the wrong end of a brush, easier to clean off after)
    - The base or whatever you are using it on.

    This tutorial is showing the way we make snow bases. We have made this tutorial as everyone is asking me how we do it.

    1. To start with, mix some bicarbonate and PVA in your mixing container until you get a thick gritty paste (you may need to add some water after to keep it a bit moist)





    2. Once you have the gritty paste sorted you are now up to the fun part. Using the mixing stick, apply the paste to the base (or whatever you want to put it on) and try to be random with it.





    3. Once applied to the area, take the base and using the empty cup sprinkle bicarbonate over all of the area where you have applied the paste (so that the cup catches the excess bicarbonate). You will end up with something like this.





    4. Now leave it to dry overnight and then you are ready to paint the side of the base (whatever colour you like) and then spray it with your favourite sealer (purity seal satin is the best we have found for it) and you are done!!


    Here is a finished model of ours.

      I don't want to knock this great article, BUT a few points:
      First, about the mixing. You can't mix PVA glue and baking soda right off the bat without it turning into 'powder' balls that refuse to mix any further. It just doesn't work. You MUST first mix the baking soda with a bit of water, AND wait. The baking soda, by its nature, will fizz and pop and bubble. Once it's done, THEN mix with the PVA glue. The best ratio I've found is 50% glue, 50% baking soda (watered down first). Get it creamy and smooth by adding a bit more water.

      Second, once it's dry, please, DO NOT do step 3 of this article and sprinkle on more baking soda. It will completely ruin your snow base! Baking soda, naturally, pops and fizzes and bubbles when it touches water, and that's exactly what'll happen when you sprinkle any on while the original mix is still wet. I can't tell for sure, but in this article it looks a hell of a lot like SUGAR, not baking soda! Anyway, if you don't believe the points I've made, try and follow this tutorial to the letter and you'll see I'm right. I tried this twice just to see if it works and it doesn't.

      It's a great article nonetheless, but if you're new at this thing it will mislead you a bit. Nice job though.

      I have to disagree Ninjato, baking soda will not fiz on contact with water. Carbonates only release gas on contact with acids, which water is not. Now unless the water where you live has a low pH, then it is fine to follow the article.

      Ninjato is right, I'm gonna try his tips and see if that works for me, exactly how he described it, happens when I followed the tut... I ended up with a base where the snow crumbled after standing out over night... Cheers Ninjato!

      Ok people, I just have one thing to say, and that is that you experience crackling and fizzling because you are using the wrong substance. Bicarbonate of Soda is not Baking Soda. Baking soda fizzles with water, bicarbonate does not. Baking soda looks dull white, bicarbonate has a sparkling radiance to it, making it glitter like snow.

      Ok after a looong while of not being able to come back to this site for various reasons, I decided to look at this article again.

      Bicarbonate of soda, according to Wikipedia, is in fact Baking Soda. Now I don't know if there are different types or not, but the type I used was plain old Baking Soda, and yes, it fizzes. If I could be bothered I'd make a video for you, but I'm not that keen....

      Anyway, if you could explain *exactly* what it is that gives the mroe sparkly effect, and doesn't fizz, that would be great.

    Painting red armour with battle damage.

    ok, here is the tute on how i do the red armour and battle damage

    undercoat black, i pretty much paint everything from a black undercoat.


    stage 1
    paint the areas you want red with scab red, try to get a smooth coverage.



    stage 2
