I hadn't thought of Jade - but it's certainly a possibility!
Don't worry - I haven't forgotten about her. I recently had to do a second round of clean-up, after it became apparent I must have done...
Thanks guys (and gals). That means the stone is really the only major part left.
Well for now I just recovered the areas with a flesh base. I'll re-do the shading before I'm done. It already...
Hmm - good thinking Zab. I'll have to give it a closer look. Once I get the other colors worked out, I should have a good idea of where to go....
So I found out something interesting - it seems the poster tack I used to stick her to her base for the photo (glue has let go TWICE already) will take paint off. That or the primer failed. Either...
Finally got some time to work on Kara.

Which works just fine for me, trust me.
The armor was just based coated in metals.
I've had these on my table as long, if not longer, than Nagash was around. I just wanted them done :D
Yeah - the horns were the last thing. They were based with off white, washed with a brown washed, dry brushed with off white again, and then highlighted with white. Not that you could tell that from...
Sorry Zab - no toast. Only crumpets.
Well I finished the Cryx, since I was actually at the house of the guy who they belong to. Rough pic but they're nothing special to begin with....
Correct on both accounts!
And don't worry about stalker vibes - your only competition lately is these worn out tumbleweeds!
Indeed.

All I have is this penciled pic.

But I figured it out.

And no instructions....
Found it. The Kara Black crossover promo with KD. How does a 30mm nearly naked female mini have 14 pieces!?
Ooh. Tough question.
I really should finish these 6 Cryx Blood Witches I've had started for ages. But bleh. They're not going anywhere.
Then there's my Malifaux crew, of which you've seen the...
Tripitaka is game done.

So I wanted to use this as an excuse to finish Lucchini, but as you can see she's already mostly done. In the spirit of GK, I didn't want to lean on my extensive collection of KD, Soda Pop,...
Boobs always win.
Been a slacker - not due to lack of desire (which I have an overabundance of for once), but simply due to lack of time. Until tonight!...
Nothing exciting - just some basecoats. All this talk of Distracted is making me, erm, distracted. Must finish Tripi haha...
The assembly is actually pretty straightforward (aside from the ropes), but the thinness of the resin makes it a test of nerves. Especially that chair back. My god. As for painting, I am definitely...
It's one of the expansions I did nab. So I'll definitely be going on about it when it arrives.
Cass has a PhD in turd polishing!
Well considering the ultimate goal is to have her sitting next to The Scribe , it will need to be something suitably disturbing. Especially since she has this, "eh." look on her face.
Bah! I tried that with my scale 75 paints. I never did get it all off of the wall.
It is. Even in person, it's a bit greyer than it should be. But since I have a resin version coming down the road, and this is a game piece, I'm not to sussed about it. :D
Thanks for stopping by.
So I'm guessing you guys would like to see more of Distracted once I finish Tripitaka? :curse!::sweat::beerwave:
I hear ya. I actually got this one off of a fellow KD:M backer. I missed the original release too.
Sure is - it's a 54mm offering called, aptly enough, "Distracted".
She's not wearing much. The level of detail in nuts. I actually was nervous prepping.

Yellow sucks to work with. Ah well.
Also........
Boo. You're the metal master though. I'm sure you'll frankenstein something that will floor us all. :D
spec-freakin-tacular Tero. Wow.
No need to apologize for cell snaps - not many people want to break out the photo tent for WIPs!
Great start. Can't want to see them cleaned up.
I second Bailey and Andy. Both are still pretty active and love to help.
Milosh is great, but I haven't seen him around in ages.
Verlinden - there's a name I haven't heard in ages. Excellent choice. I've been wanting to try a bust myself. Just need to get one!
I had almost forgotten about this behemoth. Glad to see it's nearing completion!
Not a lot of time this evening, but got the yellow going and the gi sorted.

Yeah. Malifaux has a lot of awesome minis in their new 2e range. Will be exciting to see how this goes.
Thanks Zab. I may or may not go back and tweak it - it doesn't look quite so drastic in hand. The pants will be turned into an ivory-ish linen. The overcoat is going yellow!
Started in on Trip.
First time trying a stubble effect. Not completely sold, but good enough for a game piece. Tips/Ideas/Advice/etc?...
Love that mini. Love all the Rackham Wolfen. Maybe some day I'll paint mine. Won't be as nice as yours, but still :D
Psst...
Check Crystal Brush 2013 Winners, Blue Table Painting category. Entry called "Final Charge" (the chocobo).
You'll find what you seek there.
I'm in again. I have a few things I could choose from.
This is about as plastic monkey's going to get.
Not bad for a game piece. Clearcoat tomorrow and on to the next!...
You're nuts. Keep it up!
Nakatan is a good source of inspiration. He's done a lot of really great stuff. Including entering a chocobo at CB a few years ago....
Monkey's not quite done, but man does he look at home on the board. Need to get cracking on the rest before Monster arrives and buries me....
@Darth - no doubt. Jarhead does some amazing stuff. When it comes time to paint the resin one, I'll be taking proverbial notes!
Careful with that site - it's easy to get lost down the rabbit hole and end up seeing things that can't be unseen. Also, if you order now you might get your figure by next Christmas haha.
They sure did.
Also, thanks! Part of it is the picture, and part of it is the fact that he could use more highlights. :D

Gold still needs some work, and a lot of the brown is just base coat right now. Was going...
Also known as the brush that cannot be used because that amount of paint will dry before the brush touches anything.
Man, I feel silly just painting single figures now!
@Teronus - wow.
TMM is often seen as somehow below NMM, which is a shame as when done correctly it is even more powerful than NMM (due to the fact that NMM really only works from one angle). No...
Thanks! The minis are actually really nice. And they come pre-assembled, which makes for quicker playing. It's a nice little co-op game.
I couldn't help myself. A whole new pile of shinys.
Only catch is since I pledged deluxe, I'll be getting the resin versions of the Pilgrims at some point. So I'm not going to go all out on these...
LOL
It's not a monkey, it's a severed head. Though I almost like the monkey idea instead. Like the Wizard of Oz haha
And then will blame you when it doesn't turn out the way they imagined it.
I think this is probably THE biggest thing that is overlooked. It happens in all walks of life, not just mini painting. Turning your hobby into a job usually destroys the hobby aspect of it.
It CAN be a business, but it's a market saturated with competitors, and it's a word of mouth field. Add in the fact that there's almost always a disconnect between what you want to charge and what...

Primed the rest of the crew (well not Nekima, or the Freikorp), so as soon as big and smelly here...
Glad to see mar pulling ahead :D
I have plenty of Soda Pop minis, so I should be set on this one too.
Pic makes the green look more saturated than it does in person, but still.

glad to see CMON working again.
Anyways, back to our regularly scheduled program.
Picked up a bunch of Malifaux a while ago, but only got around to playing recently.
Figured I should probably...

Thanks! Every time I look at him, I picture him in Crusader helm and tabard, and Accept's "Teutonic Terror" playing in the background.
Did this for the July contest - a fun mini, though not so mini!

Well I made it, kind of. Had to cut a few corners, but since it's just for fun it definitely passes the 3 foot test....

Was really hoping to at least get the gold done. Oh well.

David - you just need to come to chicago and host a class for me :D
One other quick bit of advice - don't get tied up in the scoring on this site. It's not what it used to be (not that it was ever perfect). Poor ten there had a mini under 5 due to malcontents, when...

More basecoating. Wanted a cooler color to offset all the warm browns. It's gonna be tight, but I...
I like that first one - and the OSL is really nice. The second pic has too much of a glare from the lights.
That's the toughest part of presenting minis online - not only do you have to have a degree in photography to get a good pic, but someone else's monitor may show things differently.
I implore you to ignore the crappy blade (I still cannot wrap my head around nmm blades) and look at the shiny bracer instead :D...
No kidding - 4.8? Man forget this site's gallery anymore ><
@Zab - those are awesome.
I did these a long time ago (in Forza 2, not minis) - http://s240.photobucket.com/user/Trystan_Spyder/slideshow/Collection/Bawidamann
And with this I promise to stop...
I have a small thing for Bawidamann's art - I actually bought a signed print of Secret Weapon at GenCon a few years ago.
My god - they made them. They actually made them. 'Scuse me while I go sell a few organs.
This is amazing stuff Sionid. Glad I stopped in!
Black is probably one of the most difficult colors to paint effectively - luckily there's a bunch of good guides in the sticky thread covering this very topic.

Still need the highest highs on the legs, as well as the skulls on the belt and the club handle....
I think your best bet to sell the lightning as lightning is going to be using OSL. Think about it - if you see a mini standing under a streetlight, or holding a lantern - the object itself isn't...
I don't think it's the color so much as what Zab said - some of the veins are too thick. The right corner of the base looks good, as does the part I can see over his left shoulder. Just...
Painting time has been a bit scarce, but I managed to make a good dent tonight.
http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff90/Trystan_Spyder/40k/dcc50d41-5231-42a3-8152-1efe2a611777.jpg
Ideally, you wouldn't. Washes are usually selectively used to pool in the low spots - something that can only be done with a light touch.
WELL DONE. Quite a job.
@oistene - those metals are great!
@webmonkey - I'll be watching your lightning closely. I have a model that has lightning too, and for the life of me I can't figure out how I'm supposed to make...
Just more basecoating. Time is not cooperating at the moment haha.
I took two pics just so you can see how the eyes appear and disappear based on angle. I didn't move the mini - just moved the light...
Blacklining is a love or hate kind of thing - and it's easy to overdo.
If you're painting in a certain style, then it's a great technique. But it's certainly not a universal tool :D
Can and do. Gets rid of the chalkiness of milliput, while allowing you to sand the mix still (try sanding pure GS lol)
http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff90/Trystan_Spyder/40k/dc1eb706-4902-4766-8009-5f6c1e5ac1f9.jpg...
Haha it does, not that you mention it.
You definitely get all you paid for (and more) with Cass. Wish I had more funds to keep him out of retirement. Certainly is cheaper than a baby.
Not a whole lot of time to paint the last few, but at least I got some basecoating done (and you can see the eyes are still there)...
@Jike Ichi - I sure did. That's what I mean by it'll be hard to see unless you have it at the right angle :)
@Maxxxxx - eew. Gross. Well done.
Just to give you an idea how big Skellie is.

Also, I went after that mold line ><...
Still need some patch fabric around the fins, and the glue needs to dry.
Then it needs a game base, and the observation basket attached. Then painted....
They're great for their intended target - tabletop use. They're cheap, very durable, and easy to paint. The detail comes and goes (smaller sculpts seem to suffer more), and they can be a pain to...
Haha Ten that's not a mold line - it's a scar?
It's a Bones Mini...mold lines aren't optional :D
I know, right?
Speaking of, I need to give you guys an update. Which I will, as soon as this glue dries. Not done, but getting there.
I dunno, what do you guys think? It works at the right angle, but the sockets are so deep most of the time you can't even see it....
I like it. It's a cool and unique effect. Not sure how you'd shade it though.
You mean I would have an excuse to actually finish Francesca finally? :D
Ah cass, how we've missed you.
Eyes - to glow or not? Would seem kind of weird on a skull this big.

Cassar? Near Green Stuff again? Has the sun imploded?
Hope I didn't bite off more than I can stomach - I swore off bone after Nagash. But this model is just so cool.
...
Aye - and while it's not going to hold up to resin or even better cast plastics or metals, it's a great product for it's intended target. No regrets on that KS pledge.
Where's the like button!?
@Zab -
That's some good thinking!
Artemis - already painted unfortunately.
Malifaux - I do have some Nephilim...do they count?
No SDE, but I do have some Sedition Wars Strain and most of the...
I was wondering about that - I know I had favorited it, and I couldn't find any trace of it when looking for it earlier today.
Also - cass you bugger. You need to stop disappearing. Hang around...
Dragons?
Cthulu?
Tempting, to be sure. But I'm not only looking at a July 31 deadline, I also have GenCon to take into consideration - I haven't even started on anything for it.
And the above...
Really kind of confused on what's a monster - I have lots of human(oids), but not a lot of true monsters - a few dragons and a cthulu, but they are way too large for this.
I don't really have gods...
It's a lot of fun - and more tactical than you would expect.
You can get the rules/counters/accessories box for about $20, but then you have to get your own planes.
You can get a duel pack for...
I haven't been entirely idle lately - but I have been doing something NOT painting (yet).
My dad has gotten me into a game called Wings of Glory - the WW1 edition. It's a lot of fun we needed some...
SW? Nope. Dusting off Malifaux, waiting for Journey and KD:M.
They're paying CMON to list the auctions, which means they want them to be seen. Kind of like how a billboard being seen doesn't make...
Hey AGN - yeah, they do police. But it's sporadic. I actually put a request in the feedback section to give us a way to view NO auctions, since they currently give us the option to view ONLY...
I've voted on 11,248, and I can't agree more with what MrJim is saying. It's a real shame that you can filter to display ONLY auctions, but you can't filter NO auctions. It's a slog going thru all...

True of just about everything. Keep at it - you're definitely getting there.
Last Exile. Good call.
The paint on the bust is great.
My only criticism (and it's not an issue with your paintjob) is that unless she put the helmet on that damaged (and why would she?), I'd expect to see some level of...
Don't you have enough Grot Tanks for your own invasion force now?
I'm sure it's been done, but it's not a very exciting statue to begin with. I don't think it's even metal haha. And they're not very small - like 10 inches tall.
http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff90/Trystan_Spyder/40k/FC4DBF4D-9661-4D79-9F4D-AE09EF373B29.jpg
Red done. On to the swathes of blue/black.
NMM, TMM, polished bare metal - who cares. It looks ace!
wait what? NMM?
I like that "nighttime" shot - he really seems to glow.
Hmm. Any of the Andrea Pin Ups, Pegaso's Thulsa Doom, Scale 75's Jessica Thunderhawk.
Lots of praise here, and good prices. Will definitely have to get some soon.
Hah!
Fair point. Though in my favour, A) I'm working off of box art - so I don't have to worry about getting creative and B) they're only tabletop+, so I'm not super worried about being perfect.

Well here's Nagash - though the pics aren't that great since he's too big for the light tent and the camera ran out of batteries. It's not going in my gallery, that's for sure.

Huh. Not sure why it looked grey on my screen.

Darth - these particular ladies are all metal, though I think Mikatu does have a resin version.
khavor - thanks! yeah, he is. Which...
Well I took some real pics of Nagash that I'll put up here once I get them cropped and sized.
In the meantime, some other pics.
At one point I was casting about for some Privateer Press things to...
Don't sell yourself short. The biggest ingredient to "success" in painting, however you measure it, is practice. I've seen a lot of people improve quite dramatically with effort.
Those are some...
For something made out of foam board and cereal boxes, that sure is amazing. I'd swear it was a primed plastic kit.
That made a big difference. Some more hot spots and you'll really be cooking (pardon the pun).
The horizon lines look a lot better. Once you get the earth shading back in it will be pretty awesome.
awesome ten. Keep it up!
I never had anything quite so drastic happen, but I remember having a bunch of painted marines chip in transit - that made me quit painting for, like, a decade. So I imagine a disaster on this scale...
+1000000000
Hey - why not? I've got plenty of monsters lying around. And July will give me some time to get ready.
Good question.
If I'm honest with myself, the answer is never enough.
Some minis lend themselves to quick, carefree painting (Reaper Bones for instance).
But I have a lot of really detailed metal...
A few small touches left, but it's effectively done. It's been ages, and to be honest I did get into a bit of a "god I just want this done" mode at the end, but it's finally complete....
You're on the right path. Horizon lines can be tricky - reference photos work wonders here. They're not always where you'd expect, and very rarely a straight line.
Thanks guys. I seem to have made a misstep on the scabbard. I had intended it to be sort of ivory with gold accents. But the colors used to lighten the scabbard itself and the colors used in the gold...
those bandages. Good god.
So I ran into something interesting with the water effects - it seems to be able to climb up objects.
I filled the base once, let it set, and then filled it a second time. It's still lower than I...
Lovely stuff as always Skel. And your metals...:D
I can see them. Good luck! I hardly have the focus to paint a single mini, let alone build and paint a whole town.
Thanks. I had to go back and add a second layer of water, since it seems to shrink a bit as it dries. No big deal. I am really pleased with the way she is turning out. Not a lot left to do - hat,...
Wow. Keep the art coming.
First time using water effects. Need to wait for them to dry, then on to finish the last few details....

He's so stinking big.
No new progress on the pirate lass.
Nagash has some progress, but it's mostly basecoating. Getting those books floating around him sorted. Man every time I think I'm getting close, there's like 10...
Updates on multiple fronts:
Not very practiced on TMM, so Nagash is presenting a bit of a pickle there. On the plus side, I'm fairly happy with how the flames turned out....
Sure can. Now I see what you mean. And I second Maenas' suggestion about bad inks.
Love wulfen minis. Will be interested to see how you paint them up.
Pics are broken - but I've never heard of shaking a wash changing the colors. Then again I've never heard of shaking a wash period.
Hmm. That's not a bad idea. Could go the brass/bronze route, and throw in some verdigris to boot.
Busted out the ol' Scale 75 Steel NMM set. Still trying to decide how to paint the two chests. I could do faux wood, but the crate is already sculpted wood. Instincts say red, but then her coat is...
I haven't had a lot of success sanding straight GS - if I know I'm going to be sanding, I usually mix in some milliput.
Looks like it's going to be Tallulah for sure. Just don't see getting Jessica...
Well her arm is back, and she's got a feather in her cap.
The base is shaping up too - and it gives me a nice place to hold so I can stop rubbing paint off....
Agree with the super matte on scale 75.
Also I have a point to add - if the paint isn't coming out, do NOT squeeze the bottle harder. I still have paint on things that should not have paint on...
I had her pinned initially - but I figured the treasure base would be enough. Live and learn, eh?
Having just tried stripes on my own mini makes me appreciate yours that much more.
Looking good!
Well the stripes have been shaded (not that you can really tell in the photos, darn it).
The hat has been base coated, the boots and hair have been base coated, and the gold trim on the boots is...
Well you've already got a good handle on the airbrush it seems.
The beasties you have here are challenging, even for people who paint for a living!
So that's an uphill battle right there.
Practice...
Well Nagash's base is almost there.
You can't see the edge highlight on the stones that well in the photo, but it's there....
Brill as usual. I can't imagine a squad of these.
Still need to clean up and shade the stripes, but progress is progress, no?

Haha you can't see most of them because of the Scale75 paint box - the case that the Lion Knight and co. are sitting on has about a dozen more unfinished minis. ><
There's 9 on top, and another 8 or...
Well....the drying worked. My heat lamp cured the sculpey. But it still warped the plastic. I ended up fixing a sheet of styrene to the bottom.
It's coming together. The flames aren't done, the...
Couldn't have said it better myself.
scalpel is definitely the better route at this point - a surgical (haha) strike as opposed to the scorched earth a file would do to your paint.
Well I will try and get my hands on Jessica. If it fails (and it likely will - $50 for a mini isn't really in the cards in the short term), I have Tallulah to fall back on.
And some actual paint work too.
Believe it or not, the etching on the base and the writing in the book are a real language :D
Yeah, the book isn't going to win any medals, but it'll work for a...
Gonna try using the heat lamp I have for speeding greenstuff curing.
Will get some heat without melting the plastic.
Got the script in place:...
As much as I'd love to, I owe Nagash's owner the courtesy of finishing him first. I've had his necromancer for far too long. :bulgy-eyes:
We'll see.
My god - it's cassar. He still lives!
I haven't forgotten Beaky mate - just at a bit of a loss at how to proceed. Imperialist Marines in fluff take good care of their wargear between engagements, so...
Did some work on the base for Nagash. Not sure how I'm going to bake it, since I don't think the black plastic will hold up to the temps Sculpey requires.
I still need to shape the stones a bit...
I want a Jessica Thunderhawk!
Yeah - the rank on your image page seems accurate, but the link is definitely busted.
Haven't gotten that far - she's already kind of based, so I probably won't do too much.
Did some more on Nagash, but not to a point that pictures need to be taken.
Also made some progress on our piratess, though. Usual disclaimer for camera photo, etc......
Alive.
And more importantly, painting again. :D
