Acrylic with a tiny drop of alcohol creates some pretty interesting and complex marbling effects, if control and precision are not necessary.

I have to admit, I'm primarily a paint-and-water washer. I've used the GW inks, washes, shades, or whatever they're called now, and a variety of other stuff. My entire family is visual artists, so...

I'm no master painter, but personally I haven't had much problem with Matte varnishes in general. They do have a slight blending effect, and they also don't have the shiny, colour-intensifying effect...

Green Stuff (kneadatite blue/yellow) is the standard for master sculpts for casting. It works well for detail, and to make molds from, but it isn't overly durable in and of itself.
