You can tell I am having to much fun painting this model because I am taking so many photos :P I have mainly been playing with the white over the last couple of days,...
Never thought of using crystals for a base before. It will be interesting to see the results of your experimentations. How are you planning to paint the necrons body, NMM, TMM, or like you did with...
Nurgle unit have definitely evolved since I last played WH40K. I like how you are keeping the green tones even when moving to other color ranges like the blue for the toads.
Thanks Bam! I really should get in the habit of writing down my recipes. I generally pick a range of colors from my paints to begin with, but then I start adding what feels right, if that makes any...
I have the same Redgrass wet palette, if its the one from their kickstarter awhile back. I have noticed if you put to much water into the palette in can mix with your paints over time watering them...
Did some work on the reds as well as the browns on the body of the reindeer earlier in the week. I decided to keep them at a middle tone and wait to push the highlights until I am ready to tackle the...
Great job creating the illusion that the feathers are not just hard bits of plastic but rather soft and fluffy.
So here is the next model I plan to work on. It has been so long I don't remember which kickstarter it is from, but it looks like something that will be just fun and not to challenging to paint. I am...
Thank you everyone! I was inspired by metalasmedium's project for the hair and skin combination. I have finished the oni of souls. I still don't have a lot of skill with eyeballs. The models always...
ooooooo! Queen of the North!
Beautifully done!
The bird is looking great! Excited to see where you go with the rest of the model. Do have to say the pic with just the birds legs grabbing the trunk reminds me of looney toons, whenever there is an...
The new eyes gives it a resident evil boss monster vibe.
Definitely like the color scheme. Reminds me of a combination of nurgle and slaanesh. Keep up the good work!
Thank you Gorb! I was quite happy with the fur vest as well.
Here is another update. Got work done on the trousers and the hair. I am both happy and unhappy with the hair. The back of the hair...
I was able to get some good painting time in over the last couple days. Do a little painting, watch a show, come back paint a bit more. I was able to finish the spear's shaft, bracers, belt, and the...
I am always amazed at what ppl (you included) can come up with to make terrain. I just never don't have the eye for it. I like what you are doing with the Macragge terrain pieces as well. I have them...
Lo e how the model is progressing. Wasn't expecting the magenta hair, but it goes really will with the rest of the colors. A good contrast with the green of the symbol on her forehead and eyes.
I see what you mean about the scythe hanging there, but this model is part of the "Rising Sun" board game. A colored plate cover slots over the base to show who owns the model during game, so it...
I agree with Dexter. You did an amazing job on the coat's pattern.
@Kuribo - It's nice to be painting again. I definitely should have restarted sooner, with all the extra time I have had.
Thank you for the kind words everyone! While the yellow-green skin isn't...
Your newest construction looks like a living pile of toxic waste. Perfect for all things Nurgle!
Excellent work!
The metals on the bust is impressive! I especially like the worn look of the chest armor.
The bird is already starting to get a soft and fluffy feel to it. Great job!
I agree. I would base the flag in your base rather than on the model, as well as maybe move more over his left shoulder?
Lol your not wrong, but that would be a very big project, plus I don't really sculpt or do much basing. I am always impressed by the work of others, but just never found it that fun for myself.
...
I didn't get any work done on the oni as I was distracted by a side project that arrived in the mail, which took me the last few days to build and organize. It's not a miniature but it does relate to...
Just wanted to add a group shot of the completed oni to get a feel of what they look like together.
80636
I will hopefully post some photos of my progress on the oni of souls later today.
Great illusion of 3 dimensionality with this diorama.
Those skin tones are epic. I am especially impressed by how each finger is so smoothly highlighted.
Got some more work finished on the legs.
80603806048060580606
I liked working with the legs more than the arms as they posse more texture which I feel helps with the shading process. Feel like I...
I started working on the next Rising Sun model, "Oni of Souls". I have done the blue one, the red one, the metal one, and now on to a lot of ppl's favorite color the green one.

Most of my...
Nurgle often is :P
Awesome job Graishak. Are these units for your army?
That is always the hope. CMON has been a great place for motivation in the past and well as a place to really improve one's skills. Also welcome back and thank you for the compliment. I knew going...
With all the craziness going on in the world I have had some more free time and finally made it back to my paints. It has been a long while since I last posted any updates, I have had a hard time...
Beautifully done!
The mini looks great, I especially like the Stag.
Great diorama! The setup is perfect!
Made a little progress:
6958669587
Did a couple of glaze layers over the lower parts of the purple robes, and started working up the shade transitions on the middle robe. When I get time I'm hoping...
Great look! Thanks for doing the Sbs.
A lovely shade of blue on that space marine.
Thank you KruleBear! I wasn't sure how I was going to go about painting it at first, but was very happy with the results.
Here is an update on the Oni of Spite. I switched from the red robes and...
Fabulous work. I second that the purple you used on the Stromcast is very well done. And as a fan of Les Miserables myself, I can appreciate your work on the bust.
That is awesome!
Great job all around! The detail of that base is gorgeous.
I'm going to stick with TMM (actually was looking to this model for some more practice on that technique). Hoping to use washes and multiple metallics, to build good highlight transitions across the...
Not a big update as I was in Texas all weekend at an American Kenpo seminar/camp, so I only got a little work done when I took Monday off.
69455
Got the colors more or less in place on the left...
Congrats! The board looks great!
Very color choices!
Congrats! Everything looks absolutely amazing!
Great job! I\ll have to try a this process for my Zombicide green horde hero minis.
Awesome way of sculpting!
Glad you made it to the forum Q! I'll leave the advice to others on here as I can see you in person and work with you. Gotta say your doing the right first steps which is to push yourself, try new...
Thank you. I do not have any plans on basing them. I will be constantly placing and removing these colored caps from base of the mini and I feel it would damage anything I do, as well as I don't want...
Thank you Foxtail and BAM. I got the Oni of Spite primed last night, unfortunately won't be able to do to much work on him. Flying out to Texas this weekend for a martial arts camp. Life always...
Its a technique called zenithal priming. I do it with almost all my minis now. Your base coats should cover it up while still giving the coating a transition of lights and darks. So if you painted a...
Nice composition there!
Awesome post. The bits of history tied into the older minis is brilliantly done.
Welcome to the hobby! Very clean painting for your first try at painting! Did you do some research before you started? One of my friends just started painting a set of mouse war/mystic/hunter/etc...
Here is the next mini from "The Rising Sun" I will begin work on. I haven't done anything yet, but will hopefully prime it this evening so I can begin work. The model is going to be covered in LOTS...
Here is the completed Oni of Skulls!
692446924569246
And then a picture of the Oni of Blood and Oni of Skulls together.
69247
That is a great group of painted minis! I think Gandalf is my favorite, the robes look really well done.
The color scheme for those spiders is fantastic. they will definitely stand out on the table top.
Thank you for the feedback Graishak. Weathering of the weapons and armor is something I should do more often. I have a tendency to paint my minis in undamaged armor and with "new loot" all the time....
The bronze and fur textures are really well done.
Great job! I really like adaptation of the skin tones. The usual green skin would have contrasted quite a bit.
Like others said to move up, you will need to add more color complexity to show the transitions from dark to light. From what I can see you have a good starting point to work up from. Now it's just...
Thank you for the compliment KruleBear. I was trying to make the Brute look tree like with a glow coming from within, plus after painting the body all the dull colors I needed to add something to...
Yeah good laptops/pc are never cheap. I financed a new gaming desktop at the beginning of this year for about $3,000. :P
Absolutely gorgeous! On close inspection you can tell its not actually marble, but when you first look at it, it takes the my mind a second to adjust. Great illusion work.
Been awhile since I have posted but I have been lurking in the shadows watching everyones progress. I have been caught up in all manner of adventures, but I keep making progress when I can. I have a...
Ummmm wow is all I can say....
Sounds like a good theory to me. I use Army Painter and Vallejo paints primarily. I used to use GW exclusively but have found I like the dropper style containers of other brands better then the GW...
@ Hairster:
The palette has its pros and cons, but I am still on my first sheet of paper so I need to experiment with it more to get a real conclusion. I'm loving the larger surface area to work...
Finished up the skin of the right arms and shoulders as well as added some tonal changes to the gold. I also started base coating all the black parts of the model. It will be interesting as I am...
I think my favorite part is the face on the knee. The highlighting is perfect.
Just little update on the Oni of Skulls. I have decided to go with TMM and finished base coating the gold. Tonight I will go back and add darker shades using agraxearthshade washes and then also add...
I own a few katanas and the rope doesn't usually dangle that far off the sheath, you did a stellar job creating and painting it.
The green skin in the middle, who I will name Bob, makes me chuckle. The other two are so in the middle of battle and "Bob" decides to stop and contemplate the meaning of War.
Looks great! I definitely like the color scheme, the blues and purples add a good contrast to all the bone and rust.
LOL it has gotten a little out of hand, my friends are starting to question my sanity whenever I buy more :P I try to at least get games that contain minis so even if I don't finish painting them I...
I keep hoping with the better quality 3D printers coming out for cheaper prices that gaming minis prices will also drop, haven't seen it yet though :P Awesome examples of what can be done with a 3D...
I don't know who here watches Dr. Who, but those Stormcast models always remind me of the Cybermen. Looking forward to seeing what you do with it BAM. As always your work is stellar.
That turquoise is a great color choice, it really makes the model catch your eye and hone in on the detail off the NMM.
Great looking squad! Find it both cool and funny that a trophy for a painting contest is a trophy you can paint ;)
Gotta say what really blows my mind with all of you higher tier painters is the construction and realism of the bases. I have great difficulty figuring out how to add that level of realism. The model...
The colors or the throne and your lizard are going to look great together once they are assembled.
Same here! Hopefully by then I will have caught up on my 100/0s of miniatures I need to paint :P
Thanks everyone! Just wanted to share the arrival of part 2 of my Zombicide Green Horde kickstarter. Finally got all the exclusives and stretch goals:
6738367384
I'm sometimes surprised that CMON...
Wasn't exactly what I was looking, but definitely interesting information. It would be pretty neat to make my own range of washes. I have been using the flow aid regularly now instead of just the...
Absolutely gorgeous shading!
Thank you. Yes I did, worked up to the mid tones, then added the red in the shadows (which came out purplish, since it was covering up the darker blues) and then finished building up to the top...
Its been awhile since I posted. I haven't been completely inactive with my painting, just caught up with summer trips and video games :P Here is the progress with the Oni of Skulls skin, almost done,...
I have to agree. I used your models photos when I wanted to show my gf what a good example of NMM gold looks like. :)
If you get an airbrush, you can find spray booths online for a reasonable price (I paid about $100 for mine, from Amazon), which help greatly by pulling the fumes and dust through a filter. I can...
That is an amazing base! The shading of the stones is really eye catching, are you going to grim everything up?
The figure looks great, but I really love that stone work.
Wonderful work! The squad looks great!
Looks great, I especially like the purple skin tones. The photos look good to me, but I am not a good judge as I am still struggling to get proper pictures of my minis as well ;)
Welcome back to the time warp that is painting :)
So made my palette for the skin tones:
66654
Then started experimenting. I have only done the thigh in the box, and I'm liking it so far. I'm thinking of adding a bit of a red ink/wash into the...
Thank you Maenas, I tried out the flow medium last night while base coating the Oni's skin. I did it with the 1:20 dilution in water and then added a drop or two to my paint. I definitely liked using...
I got the Oni of Skulls primed this evening, trying the Zenithal priming:
6663466635
And then while that dried I looked through my paints to figure out what I wanted to use for the skin tones, and...
lol I didn't realize all the old Warhammer minis look so happy :) I love the Horror Rave!
Welcome to the Rising Sun slog ;) The models are looking good, I am taking the same approach with my Rising Sun minis as there are just so many of them :) and I also backed Hate, I like Adrian Smiths...
SO I have a question and hopefully can get some help. I just picked up a bottle of Liquitex Flow-Aid and was wondering the proper use for it with miniature painting. Do I use it to thin my paints (I...
A bit late to the congratulatory party, but congrats! Your work is impressive as always!
Very good job!
You have done a great job giving each rat their own personal feel. Can't wait to see the completed squad together.
Its the fun torturous challenges that keep bringing us back to work on more ;) Looking good and good luck on the assembly.
Good suggestion about the bases, but probably more work and money then I am willing to do at this point. I can always go back later if I decide to.
I too am interested in seeing how your experimentation with the NMM came out, especially since I am going through the experience of learning it myself.
Not much to say but, "Looking good" ;) Your skin technique is masterful.
Thank you everyone! I had a 5 day weekend this past weekend and found one day to paint, and here is the results:
6643366434
I'm leaving the base black (and will add one more layer to make sure I...
Wonderfully done! I have just started working on my Rising Sun game, you do the models great credit.
Finally had some sit down time with my mini, not a lot done. Slowly bring the cloth up to a cool white, and started adding the weathered leather texture.
6615966160
Still haven't worked my way up...
Could also be a bokuto which she uses for training.
I don't know about the thing on her stomach, but the tube out of her belly button is part of the belly button piercing. Also does anyone else notice that she has a naked blade resting on her...
Wonderful job! And amazing detail work!
This isn't really and update on the mini, as I haven't done to much more since the last set of photos, I just got a new phone with a much better camera so I wanted to see if a difference can be seen...
Thank you very much!
Looking good! Quick question how did you go about getting that white? For the mini I am currently working on there is a section of white cloth and I am researching how others handle painting white...
Looking good. Gotta say you have a unique style of painting, almost reminds me of water colors for some reason.
Thank you, NMM can be daunting to try, this is only my second time trying and I feel I could spend forever adjusting the darkness here, the highlights there and never make progress on the actual mini.
Took today off work, because I felt like having a day to myself, which finally gave me some time to actually paint. I have made some progress, I just started on the steel, decide to use TMM for the...
Here is the first mini I every painted. I have always been artistic throughout my life, but primarily with drawing and color pencils, so I had a basic understanding of color composition, but had no...
If you are trying for the effect in the picture, maybe finish up the chains and then dry brush the corrosion on in the locations you want then maybe a light glaze blending it in a bit, but also leave...
Coming along great! There is definitely going to be a good contrast between the model and the base.
Making progress slowly, started building up the yellow which I will eventually turn to gold.
6543865439
Reminds me of a 40K Chaos Lord. The one side is the mutated armor that is a usual characteristic and the other is the old insignia of its Legion.
Wonderfully done! Is that an Aradia miniature?
Began working on the hands, I will keep applying glazes until there is a better transition between the hands and arms. I also began building up the brown base coat on parts I am going to try nmm gold...
I cant wait to see it take shape! When I first started playing Warhammer 40K Kharn drew me to wanting to play Chaos.
The pauldrons look just like aged tarnished bronzes, great job with a great depth of subtle textures. Looks like metal that has been through many acid rain storms...or pock marked orc skin leather ;)
Yeah that is one of the reasons Kickstarter is eating my soul/wallet. CMON keeps coming out with new games with a TON of stretch goal minis for free with backing.
Thanks Kuribo, it feels good to...
That is totally badass! Very well done! It would make a wonderful center piece for an army!
That is some awesome fee hand very metal ;)
Finally had another chance to sit down and paint today. Made progress around the upper torso, so now just need to do the calves and feet, then I'll come back in start darkening the hands.
6515765158...
Spent the evening building up the skins shading. I am going to keep the shading about the point you see, finish up the body, and then come back and adjust it after I work on some of the other...
Thank you everyone! I'm currently at work thinking about how I want to proceed all the while staring at the clock going, "Can I do home and paint yet?"
Meph: I'm definitely interested in seeing...
Dusted off the airbrush this evening and then started experimenting. I decide to use Black primer spraying at an upward angle followed by White primer sprayed from directly above to start creating...
Thank you for the source material Hairster, I'll definitely take a look! The Rising Sun game was the first game I ever backed on Kickstarter and all the stretch goal monsters and gods are really well...
FINALLY got my new art station all setup this Sunday, so now I can finally begin some painting again (but only a little bit at a time at least until March is done and gone).
64953
And this is the...
It can be disheartening when the scores drop, I know it was a bit for me, each model I submitted to my gallery was getting a higher score until the last one I submitted, which all of a sudden was my...
Gorgeous, and you did it so quickly! Congrats on the bronze and hope to hear good news about CB!
I cant wait to see everything assembled!
I like the blue color of the hair. It goes well with the greens and purples you already have. Maybe instead of going to all black maybe a darker blue with lighter highlights?
Stellar work! The nmm is looking spot on, same with the horn and chin shadow. Plus the veins going across the back of the head add just that little extra bit of realism.
I'll definitely have to peruse these videos, when I have time. The knight is looking wonderful, especially the eyes. The little dot of reflection you put in the pupil makes them that much more...
Looks great! The face highlights work really well and you didn't loose any of the wrinkle details. Are you going to push the beard into grey colors or more of a frosted black?
Oh if I took a pic from further away you would see all the usual clutter and mess, well except for now since all my paints and tools are in boxes for the next few days :P
Gotta say as I went through the posts I had to double check your Slambo because at first look I thought your display had LEDS causing it to glow.
What you see above was after one soak of about 20 mins and then using a tooth brush to scrub and that was it. I have tried acetone before on plastic minis and didnt like how it sometimes ate the glue...
Thanks Bam, gotta love simple green. I'm close to being able to begin painting again, moving into my new place this Sunday in fact. I'm probably not going to be working on the models above because I...
Awesome work! I need to start looking at doing my own customizations to models to make them unique. Your painting is great, but gotta say I do enjoy seeing how you prep the models.
I have always been impressed with your use of complementary colors, especially in your green skin tones. It really brings life to the model and is very pleasing to the eye.
Great idea for the arrows, they look top notch. I also like the use of the clamp holding the brass rod. It looks a lot like something I could use my mini hand drill for, which I never thought off...
My guess as to why what was supposed to be a quick table top miniature took so long was because someone painted past the table top quality. Good job! I also agree with everyone else about the...
Great job on taking a miniature that lacked a lot of fine detail and adding it back in with your painting skill alone. Breaths a lot more life into the mini.
The painting and base construction looks amazing. I do have to say for some reason every time I look at the barbarian I keep thinking of The Rock.
Looking good! That red really pops!
It happens to everyone when painting a whole army by hand, unless you use an airbrush for tabletop quality, and then you can more or less blast through the army in one go. Ultimately if you are...
Wonderful idea! I always love seeing the work of artist who can tell a tale with the composition of their work. Looking forward to seeing how things progress.
I gotta say you have improved immensely since I was last here. I like seeing your new work outside of your Mansion of Madness minis, those Khrone Blood Warriors are done really well. :)
Why are you creating the thing from my worst nightmare? Looks awesome and disturbing!
So the Chaplins have been released from the green chamber, here are a couple before and after.
Terminator Chaplin:

Jump Pack Chaplin:

Now on to priming everything!
Nothing to much I just got back from a camping trip so I didn't have a lot of time to work on anything, but I did begin the prep for a few new projects:
59817
This is the Fire myrmidon from the...
I have finally completed Rocky!
597625976359764
With this I can finally move on to my next two projects. I have begun cleaning and assembling one of them, and I'll post pics once I have both...
59753
New projects just arrived :) These are from http://aradiaminiatures.com/index.php from when I backed their Dante's Inferno Kickstarter :)
Really well done! I bet your client is absolutely ecstatic with what you have done!
The fix looks great, now it just looks like decorative chiseling.
ROFLMAO!!! That would be so great!
Love the work! Definitely need to pay attention to how you do the fleshtones as its something I need to practice at.
SO based on the colors of these models are they the cheerleading squad for your Bloodbowl team? ;)
That isnt a bad idea, bring in a bit of the main base colors I used on the dragon. I'll definitely need to look into acquiring more basing materials, since I never really focused on it I'm currently...
I like the fact that you based/primed in brown so you can already get a feel for how the colors work with browns.
Those two just scream Fraggle Rock! The texturing of the skin is very well done.
It being 3 dimensional is odd, or I would say it could be a tribal design/rune work painted onto the stone. If it was concrete I would say it was added before the axe head was poured. Definitely can...
Thank you both! I agree with you Ten ball that is why I want to look around and see if there is anything that can work without clashing, ultimately I want to keep the base muted on colors so the...

So this will probably be the last update on the dragon, at least for awhile. I want to add some foliage, but want to search for what works just right before picking it up. . I think I am done...
Just a quick update since it has been awhile, and I finally got about an hour of work in on the dragon. I am close to finishing it up, so I'm trying to get that final push of motivation. I want to...
Great job that tortoise still blows my mind! I have viewed Aradia miniature's catalog and I like the look of their work. I backed their Dante inferno kickstarter so I should be receiving 5 models...
The steel on that helmet is amazing, very realistic beaten/worn look.
Everything looks perfect! You could almost think of it as a taxidermy turtle.
Welcome back! I've been kind of the same, painting here and there, knowing I need to finish up a project but just not having the motivation to do the final push :P
The leather looks good the only issue I can see is that the coloring is very similar to the color you used for the shadows in the green so the belts tend to blend in and not stand out. A possible...
Crackin good start so far!
I also use Vallejo air primer, I haven't had any issues with it so far, but I'm still pretty new to using my air brush, so probably just haven't run into issues yet. I have a few of the models lying...
Very nice. I created a back story for the Chapter of Ultramarines I used to play, where this particular Chapter was gifted to the Adeptus Mechanicus, and over the centuries they were influenced by...
I'll definitely give it a shot! It has been tough figuring out the lighting for the base since I tried to have the light source be from above, which means most of the base is under the dragons out...
I feel your pain! I sometimes wished I had stuck with one color for my dragon so I could have airbrushed and then drybrushed :P The work you are putting in though is paying out immensely, once...
By pushing the depths do you mean darkening the recesses with a variety of darker tones?
Very well done! This will be a stunning model once its completed.
@BAM: Thanks BAM! A lot of it I have learned through your advice and watching your WIP.
@Kuribo:
Your advice is very appreciated, I'm adding a few close up pictures of the Dragon's base, maybe...
You have my sympathy. The relapse isn't to surprising, I have a brother who is an addict and he can go years without one. You think everything is going good with him, he starts to get his life...
Alright an update after a long time of nothing, this summer has been keeping me busy!
I said I would show an update of the dragon and here it is:
5879158792
I am having some issues here as I do...
Great meme Meph, I live in the pacific northwest so I have friends who look just like that guy :P The darker the beer the happier I am, love me a good stout or porter :) Also on a side note good work...
Keep it up! For everything that goes wrong, there is a lesson learned, which only leads to improvement!
In that case your texturing of the egg looks spot on! Are you going to be painting the model as well or just sculpting?
I agree with Warsculptor. In the movies the eggs look almost grown onto whatever surface they are attached to, so you could have a wider flatter base representing this.
