Dry pigments you can buy from various companies like earth pigments .com or secret weapon or even make your own from pastels. They are used for weathering and dust and mud fx.

You only need a small magnet on each side of the join if you use rare earth magnets which are very strong. Use a drill bit that is the same diameter as the magnets so it sits flush with the surface...
