In my humble opinion, if you already have a digital camera, don't go and purchase another one. If all you want to do is photos of minis to post on the web, it should be enough. The minis don't run, usually they stay were you put them, so you have complete control over the environment, in order to use your camera to its full capabilities. Here are two photos that I've made to prove this point in a Portuguese modelling forum:

One was made with a P&S and the other with a DSLR (can you see which is which)?

Much more important will be the way you light the mini. Here's my set up for those photos:

Notice that my light source in not close to the model. That would create very strong shadows. I have one single light source some 2 meters away from the miniature. With the tripod, exposure time is not an issue and you can use 30 secs (or more) of exposure if necessary. Just figure out what works best for your camera.

Here's a link for a small tutorial I've posted on another forum, if anyone is interested in some particular set up:

    Just my 2 cents!

P.S.: Btw I mainly use a 7 years old Nikon D50 with the kit 18-55 basic lens, but have used others (not DSLR) with nice results also.

Correct (I just hope you didn't cheat checking the file name)! But my point is that the difference is not to big (the P&S that I've used for that photo is almost prehistoric; 2002 IIRC).

I didn't look at the file names but the top photo has significantly more washed out colours and the text is handled badly. Overall, both photos are very sharp and better than the vast majority of uploaded photos though.

    Thank you!

Of course you can get better results with the DSLR easily.
In my humble opinion, if you only want to do some photos of your minis to share them online, chances are that the camera that you already own might be good enough for it!

I stick to my Digital SLR Cameras. Easy work for me especially in editing and getting the right angle for my photos.

Been using an EOS 600D for a little while now, and recently started using a cheapo 50mm prime and a pair of diffused remote flashes. Picture quality has dramatically improved but now I want to re-shoot all my crappy old pics!

I am really not a photo geek. I use a Nikon Coolpix AW100 but until my painting improves a lot the camera will not be the limiting factor.

Canon T3i Rebel , with various lens. Have been using this camera for about 2 years, like if fine enough.

Canon 7D is my main camera body. Variety of lenses, but I'm finding for mini photography I'm either using my 15-85mm or 100mm macro, with an external flash.

I've recently been using a Sony a6000, but prior to that I had a Canon Rebel XTi. Both very solid cameras!

I use my iPhone 5S for most quick WIP shots and my Nikon D3100 with the kit lens. I want a new lens but I don't feel like spending the money for one.
