    Default Thrice damned ebay!!!

Grumble... Just listed a film poster on Ebay and I find that I'm not allowed to charge anything for postage on it because Ebay doesn't think I should. What the hell is wrong with these people? I don't want to send it by second class in a basic envelope as it's a rare piece. Needs special delivery with insurance and now it'll have to come out of the final price... along with Ebay's horrendous cut.... and paypal's horrendous cut.... and they're the same freaking company.

    Gaaarggghhh!!!

Man I wish Google would just juggernaut them.

you can put in the listing that you won't accept responsibility for items lost in the post using free second class shipping but will for first or special at the price you say ..?? It's shite the whole free postage on stuff all thanks to peole listing dvd's at £2 and such like to avoid paying ebay full fees than charging customer £10-12 postage... There is an option to nclude a postage price but it's not very clear ..

You are not allowed to charge shipping? Are you supposed to ship for free?
Are you using their shipping calculator, don't , just state shipping in the description, not the calculator part and don't list the poster in the poster section.

try amazon, they make you charge a flat fee at least.

Another solution is to list on eBay.ca not eBay.com
I know the .ca doesn't have some of the shipping rules that .com has.
I heard others complaining that if you wanted to ship CDs or DVDs you were limited to what you can charge for shipping, but I didn't see that on .ca.
    A suggestion.

the DVD thing is daft anyway - ebay have always had in their rules that postage couldnt be any more than 30% (I think) of the final value. They just never enforced it - I think the whole free postage is just a way of enticing more buyers which is the only thing ebay cares about.
They may be head and shoulders above other sites but they are alienating their sellers. As soon as a viable alternative comes along there will be a lot jump ship.
Cmon should get their own set-up going. Im sure people here could be enticed to give it a try. Granted ebay gets more traffic overall but this is the biggest for terms of miniature related traffic surely

There is an alternative, you just have to use it!

    Well, I'm on .co.uk here.

Yes, there are alternatives to Ebay but unfortunately they're all so fringe that you're just not going to get much money out of it. Need the big guns to come out and set up a proper alternative with some marketing muscle behind it.

Wargames Market would be a decent plan for selling minis but I'm not sure I'd like to try rare movie memorabilia on there as much of the target market would never see it.

I've been thinking about e-bid, especially for non mini related stuff

Hmm... I almost feels like there just might be something new popping into existence soon... 'Google Trade'! do it from your own desktop!

So, I have a couple of nice OOP items (R's Ashan'Tyr and a 'Partha Planescape boxset, both sealed) that I'd like to sell to raise some crimble cash. Do you think I'd be better advised to stick them on Ebay or Wargames Market?

    bit late for Crimbo money?
I'm a bit biased but why not give WM (it's actually Games2Trains now, personally I think it's a stupid name) a go, the worst that can happen is they don't sell, There's a small registration fee, listing fees don't come in until $300, and other's are pennies. And there are NO FVF's!

    G2T site fees

just make sure you pimp them everywhere

Hm, going to sell my old school resin titans sooner or later, but been putting it off because I dread using eBay these days. Number one reason is the inability to leave a negative for a buyer when you sell stuff. Friend of mine works at a pawn shop selling their excess stock online, and he's shared some awful horror stories about eBay's restrictions.

I'll probably give Wargames Market a try.

New Zealand and Australia already have an alternative - Trademe.

Not quite sure why they haven't gone international with this yet. Guess it needs lots of money and advertising.

As for Games2Trains, they look as though they don't care about the site or making money. There are almost never any listings! It's all very well offering sellers a cheap way to sell stuff, but what's the point if there is nobody around to buy it?

They need to invest a whole heap of cash into marketing if they want it to go anywhere. There's no way they can rely on word of mouth to kick start the community they need.

    yeah ebays daft anyways.
it is to bad theres not really a good alternative anywhere. we have craigslist but you kind of want to make sure you find a good drop point. not the sort of people you bring home.
Now doing commissions! PM me for details.
wanted: any plastic models from the screamingbell/Plague furnace. PM if you have any.

You've probably hit the nail on the head there Scott. I was kind of hoping when it went up for sale Chern might have had a sniff
The previous owner reconed he did a bunch of advertising on various websites and magazines, didn't seem to be effective

E-bay is probably doing this to stop all of the people who pad sells profit with outrageous shipping charges. Unfortunately, the honest guys end up suffering.

Ah well, the auction is over. Didn't go as well as hoped but I got a decent enough sum. Ended up going to a guy in the states so I got postage costs (so far even Ebay haven't insisted on free overseas shipping).

Time to say goodbye to my vintage Nightmare on Elm Street poster...
