Default Robin Hood - epic fail

Didn't have high hopes for this from the outset (given the pseudo-history endemic to Gladiator and Kingdom Of Heaven) but from what I've heard about it now it's just a disaster on so many levels.

    SPOILER ALERT

First off, Crowe is just too old for the storyline they went with; the film starts before he's an outlaw, on crusade with Richard Lionheart's army, but Crowe is in his mid-40s, not in his prime, and he's not even looking like an in-shape 46 either.

The film is long, and feels it apparently. But don't think you'll be bored, oh no, not with so many subplots to keep track of!

Back to that storyline... anyone with any knowledge of the period is likely to have some problem with the many liberties they've taken with the broad strokes of the period - Richard dies on his way back from crusade, how's that for starters?! But it's the oh-so-close details that really irritate me, as they did in the other two films. They appear convincing to Joe Soap, but they could SO easily have taken the trouble to make them accurate, especially given the budget; instead they do the cop-out because, hey, who cares right?

I won't 'spoil' the details of the climactic bit that in many ways embodies all that's worst about Scott's histo-fantasy films, but I will mention it's when the French invade *shudder*

Its based on a fictional character. Plus have you seen it or not? From the way you wrote the second part it sounds like you have seen it, but the first seems like you haven't.

Also, the age thing, in the film it says he was on crusade for a decade, so if he left at 30 and is 40 at the start of the film. To me this makes more sense than having some 20 year old come back from the crusades (as it would have taken bloody ages to get there anyway, let alone fighting for a few years too). Yeh, there are quite a lot of historical inaccuracies, but at least the accents were pretty good, it would have annoyed me more if they all had crap accents.

(the whole France invading bit was shite though)

next you're gonna tell me they took the Chunnel!!!

to be honest, i don't have a problem with Ridley's films, or Crowe's historical roles...
it's cool to have the imagery, and action on film...
i just wait 'til the disc comes from Netflix, so i don't feel i waste any money...
i enjoyed Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven, and Master and Commander...
of course, i didn't spend $10 (or more) to see them, so no big deal...

    cheers

I take it Crowe's men weren't Merry ? no drunken ale dancing in the woods

It worked brilliantly! Didn't they mention the crusades took place on Mars in this film?

Which as an aside brings up my annoyance and hatred of the so called urban camo you see kicking about... Or Cowmoflage, as I call it. Red orange and black camo too? It's surely some kind of ironic joke I don't get...

I haven't seen it and I probably won't. I am a Robin of Sherwood fan and EVERY big release movie I have seen covering this doesn't hold a candle hostorically or in mood to the low budget BBC series of old. Ever here of Herne's son? Probably not if you have only watched Costner and Crowe...

I heard there was a debate over whether Crowe's accent was northern or Irish... :P Sounded a bit sketchy in the advert!

I don't mind too much about the history and as long as the French get a good kicking and there is no underlying anti-monarchy plot then I will be happy. If it is some colonial tripe saying how evil the English kings are then it might slide down the scale to Braveheart and The Patriot levels of manure..Still will find out when I see it!

    I've chosen my side.

I did laugh at an SF bloke once. He killed me then brought be back to life with his special sas powers... Then killed me again in about 20 different ways.
The places those blokes managed to find themselves , without being detected, (to me) explains crop circles.

It was meant to be a Barnsley accent, tbf I think he pulled it off pretty well. Everyone doing a notts accent were also pretty spot on.

Sorry, but wasn't the whole Robbin Hood legend essentially anti-feudalism and anti-monarchy? The man is supposed to be an outlaw who robs the richest land owners and gives it to landless serfs.
    -------

Course I also love the arguments when people want a historical Robin Hood movie, considering the whole thing is legend and the stories are inconsistent throughout their telling as to the time period.

Find me a place where my ABU pattern uniform will blend in, and you'll be the first to figure that one out.

2 hours really felt like 4... with no real payoff. It was a really tiny invasion... with archers charging armored men with swords and shields. urg.
I like it firm and fruity!
