Thread: Models not getting as many votes as they used to?

Default Models not getting as many votes as they used to?

Not really sure what board to put this on as I'm not sure if it's a bug, a change in voting trends or what, but ever since the relaunch of the website, none of my models seem to go above the 30-35 votes level. It may be a total coincidence, but I wondered if anyone else has experienced something similar or there had been a change to some sort of algorithm.

I seem to remember that the personal ranking is calculated by averaging your top 5 miniatures with over 50 votes and I'm kinda curious where I stand with that, but at the moment nothing recent has reached that number.

I know this could simply be a case of recent stuff not getting as many views (is that down to a change with how long new models are frequently shown?), but it does seem to be a stopping point at about 25-35 votes.

Yup, ive found exactly the same, my entries from a few weeks ago hit 30 and Ive had something like 3 votes since... mysterious... :P

Same here. I've got an entry from the 1st Sept that is still on 47 votes. The more recent stuff... that is from the 26th Sept has not yet topped 35 votes.... the one exception being my jetbikes which managed to trouble the bottom of the "top last 7 days" page.. they're on 59.

So is this a case of people back at school/uni and not voting as much or has there been a change in the way minis are viewed.
Another issue which may occur is inclusion in the CMoN annual. As far as I understand it you get the right to submit pics of any entry posted in that year that has scored 8.0 or above. Now if that is the same as the ranking where you need 50+ votes for it to count, does that mean that entries that are on 8.0+ but with less than 50 votes are not elligable for inclusion in the book?

Yep it seems to be taking 3 months or so for any of mine to hit the 50 mark. When I joined, this time late year, I remember I'd hit the 50 mark pretty quick and then it would stall. Seem's to be doing that at the 25-35 mark now.

Anyway, they'll get there in the end I guess! I'm gonna do a half hour voting now I think. Think I'm guilty of not doing it as much as I should, so can't complain about mine

I didn't realise you could submit for the book, where is the info of how to go about it? Would love to get something in there!

At around February next year ( guessing here) you will receive an email asking if you want to submit higher res pics for any of your minis submitted in 2011 that have a rating of 8.0 or above with more than 50 votes. You get a link for each submition that qualifies. It's a really simple process. Not all images will necessarily make it into the book but as long as the image is of a high enough quality then it will probably make it in.

I made it into the 2009 book and hopefully the 2010 one as well... waiting for that to be released soon. It's such a cool thing to see pics of my minis printed in a book with my name next to it. That and the fact that the books are a great collection of pics of some of the best painted minis around.

Well, I know it's not just affecting me at least! Any chance one of the overseers could shed some light on this? It is a curious one for sure.

It's normally just volume of posters combined with number of voters. The former keeps going up faster than the latter

I confess I've barely touched the Gallery since it changed format. Fuzzy, sometimes distorted thumbnails, with ugly white bars glued top and bottom and the text doesn't line up for easy scanning. I'm assuming tweaks are still are ongoing though so I'm sure this is just a bumpy patch.

I imagine once the shock of change wears off the number of votes will start to climb again.

Thinking about it, a mechanism to view all, apart from GW, would be nice. I think about voting and having to plough through entire 40K armies submitted in one batch is awfully offputting. Tjhere are just too many space marines in there for a non-40K mini fan

    Cheers, B.

Same here. Of course, this thread guilted me into doing some voting while I was waiting for some reason the other day. But one session in a year doesn't lend itself to large number of votes being submitted. Another reason is that it appears the counter of how many votes I've done is gone. That was always a little guilty reminder for me.

You could always do what I do when I hit a stretch of those. Hover over the 3 vote and repeatedly hit it until a new pic pops up. A 3 rather than a 1 in order for it to not automatically get rejected in the calculations.

Hmph...well this is so true. Is Just checked my latest post and after a month or so, only 37 votes and only 8 Registered votes. Man that is lame*. I don't know. Maybe people don't like my works or what. Maybe it's this the new layout or something Well actually...if you look at my so called "slagship model", you will see that the registered voters think its basically worth almost nothing I actually didn't expect that, for apparently unregistered voters though it is a top quality miniature. All this makes me wonder if it is cool to post any pics or not.

Well...thanks to those who have at least voted, and especially to those who have left some comments.

*Some of you have hinted hat it would be better if only registered members could vote. Well I'm against that for apparently registered voters don't really want to vote.

The whole idea behind registered voters being more "reliable" than the average punter due to the fact that they have actually paid something for the privilege is in theory sound. However from my experience the reality is somewhat different. My latest figure that I have posted ( Ghazghull Thraka) was posted today and went live soon after. The first - registered - vote was a 5. Now it may not be of a standard where it will worry those regular faces in the "Top last 7 days" catagory but table top standard it certainly ain't. Some might say that they voted to bring the average down to what they think it should be, but come on it's only just gone live...place the score that you think it's worth and let the rating average out over time.
As it stands the rating has gone up to what I would expect but it still gets my goat a bit when some people vote deliberatly low to bring a score down. In a way they are worse than snipers, at least they mindlessly vote 1 on everything rather than picking on one mini to bring the score down.

I don't think it distinguishes between votes from paying and non-paying members. It just distinguishes between voters who are logged in, and those who are not. For the record, I DO try to vote fairly: partly because I want the site I pay to use to be known for fair voting, but also because it's just the right thing to do.

Hmmm...That person must have either really really high standards or most likely it was just a spiteful act. No way that Thraka would deserve only 5. I have seen that model and I would say that it's more closer to solid 8 or 8,5 that 5. This only proves that being registered voter doesn't automatically mean that someone couldn't also be a douchebag

Put as for this other matter; well I don't really think that the new gallery page would be That off-putting :S So could it actually be the reason why people are less eager to vote. Maybe it is...

I've always liked to post things in the gallery in the past and am trying to continue presently. The last couple of minis have gotten a few votes and even less on the comments. I always look for feedback here. I see many users put up their works in the forums for comments and criticism. Perhaps that is way to go. I don't take the actual score personally though.

If you are looking for useful constructive criticism then the forums are def. the way to go. You don't always get a large number of replies but the ones you do get are normally very useful.

I don't get it why all new submissions stops on 32-34 votes. Even in the "top last 7 days" models on the end of the list according to rating have like 40 votes. It must be about 9.0 to have 50 or more votes. I suppose that because of links from forums or in the other hand.
People don't vote so often these days? I remember that getting 50 votes on new submitted mini wasn't a problem.

I don't think anyone can give you a definitive answer as to why there appears to be less voting activity.

For myself my voting has virtually dried up, since I no longer have access from work (at lunchtime of course) what time I spend on here seems to be concentrated on approving images and comments and the rest of my time being spent in the forums.
Since I get to see so many pictures on approval, perhaps I'm becoming jaded and cynical, but regretfully I'm seeing a lot of "sameness" in submissions and lttle which grabs the attention. (After all 100 submissions of the latest GW UberHard character isn't going to fill me with voting "trigger happiness").

Well, I just did some voting for the first time in a long time yesterday, and there may be a website problem. For fun I went to browse gallery and was voting on all the minis in the 1-2 scoring range. There's only 22 in that scoring range on the whole site. After voting on all of them I looked at the browse gallery in the 1-2 scoring range again today, and about half of my votes didn't take. Same problem today as well. Could be a major issue for a site devoted in large part to voting on minis...

Since this thread started I have been doing more voting. Something that I have noticed is that you get a whole bunch of recent - ie last 2 days - minis and then a few random ones from the entire collection. There doesn't seem to be a preference to show those that have still not reached 50 votes, which may be why the mini that I posted on 1st Sept has still only got 48 votes.
Admitedly it could also be down to fewer people making the time to vote, possibly combined with more pics being posted. Going on the image number of the minis that I have posted - since 1st Sept to 14th Nov there have been 5326 images posted !!! OMG thats over 2000 / month.

One answer for lower votes could be that the new site is impossible to get to the most recent posting of pictures. All I can do is go to random images many of which are old pictures. I have to use the old site inorder to see the newest posting of pictures. My figures stop in the mid 30's too and I figure this is the reason. The new site is terrible so I still use the old site.

here is one guy that has figured a way around it http://old.coolminiornot.com/291742 I guess pimping up his ego is more important than getting critique on his painting. Every one of his mini's has tons of sky high votes.

Isn't the first and won't be the last. Easy to spot though as they are the ones who make it into the "top 10 last week" with usually double or triple the number of votes as those at the top. Some pics take an aweful lot of padding to get the rating up. TBH the only person they are fooling is themselves. A look at the new system shows what the registered voters think of them.... and it's normally a lot lower.
