Thread: Go for gold

    Default Go for gold

    Hi
in a few weeks (17th of may) we will have our yearly GW painting comp here up north (the Fang). and since i feel that i have stagnated if not degraded as a painter over the last year i feel the need to get better at painting. i will post one of my projects here at least, a nurgle sorceress for fantasy, as well as a bunch of other stuff for you to comment on.

first some pics (which are bad, cellphone cam) of painted stuff for you to have a look at and comment/critizise.

Necrosius, nurgle sorcerer. painted for the fang in 2010, did not place

Champ of khorne, painted for the fang in 2011, won first place in 40k single

Nurgle champion for fantasy, first finished model 2012, this is what i would consider high end TT and he is painted for my army.

and finally a juve from my escher gang, also painted in 2010.

cheers, and i will update later today with the current minis, but if you guys could have a look at what i should focus on to get better i would be happy

Yes...totally without talent, i would just give up panting alltogether......

Man that nurgle sorceror is looking good, you really nailed the armor
The odds of succesfully finishing this miniature is 3720:1

Aye, that looks like shite if ever I saw it... NOT!
If you feel your paintskillz have degraded, you've got to get on the wagon again asap because I'm frickin' curious what you'll be able to pull off once you've flexed your painting muscles.

The Necrosius nurgle sorcerer's standard free hand remind me a CD cover from Cannibal Corpse! Really well done! Like them a lot! Good luck for your competition...

What Nurgle sorceror? All I see is a wet t-shirt and BOOBIES!

I agree with the others. Zero talent. You should find a different hobby and send me all your paints and brushes!

All kidding aside, dust off the cobwebs and get painting!

Rare to find a fellow metal listener.
Yes it is Vile cover, exact! Remembering good memories, trying to show off listening violent music while at school. But now 20 years later, still listening it and like to do so while painting!

Your skills are good, I often have this feeling also, after some painting, I look back and tell myself, what the hell, you didn't progress a bit... and all of a sudden I achieved something I always struggled to finalize! I think this is the joy of progression, especially in a creation hobby like painting minis... Simply look back at the first mini you ever finished and you will realized your achievements. I often have the feeling that it is never a linear progression but always a 'by steps' progression but they get longer and longer, you are just about to take the next step...

    Happy painting!

bloodhowl, there will be more boobies, trust me....

skelettetts: yep still around, just not that active since i became a single dad, ive been doing this for 18 years, i wont quit that easily.

boubi: metal is for life i guess, in sweden we outnumber the "normal" kids easily.
listening to necrophagist right now, trying to get some paint on a beastman.

my first mini is laughable, its probably the worst first mini anyone ever did, true horror. i just feel like i got stuck a few years ago and i havent really progressed since. i read and try a lot of new stuff but just cant seem to get over that barrier.

writing here isnt getting that beastman painted...

    Cannibal Corpse FTW!
I wuv deathmetal, always have, always will. Although over the past few years I've been drifting to more melodic and soundscape'y metal.
Thurisaz (the Belgian ones, wicked stuff), Ghost Brigade, Tryptikon, ...
Although I'm also a huge fan of 'galloping' metal like Amon Amarth, Devil Driver, Scar Symmetry, etc...
And weirdly enough I'm an equally passionate fan of Reggae & Dub, good lounge & chill music, and stuff like Seeed and Gorillaz etc etc...
Although I'm pretty sure I'll still be listening to metal when I'm old, crippled, and grey and firmly in Grandfather Nurgle's embrace.

so heres some more pics, first out is a nurgle sorceress which i call Jenný´fer the wormqueen, a name shes taken from my ex.

and then its hellenika, the limited edition girl from kabuki models. i resculpted some of the genital area and added some extra on her hips and thighs to make her look a bit more human.
and the spear just broke for the pic, my luck
paintwise im going for a more artsy feel so the blends are not perfect but theyre not meant to be either.

the beastman, trying some things for my horde

and i finish off with my giant, painted so far for my night goblins and built/painted to resemble me. in order to do that i gave him stretched lobes (mine are at 50mm) and some tattoos that are copies of what i currently have myself, except the legs which are covered, luckily. i used to have a mohawk like this but now i have dreads, might redo it, might not.

the giant has been an ongoing project for years, just dont want to rush him.

    cheers for looking....

First off, all of this stuff is well done, and I assure you that you will get back to where you were in skill, if you strive for it. Second, LOVE the Khorne guy, very well done. Reds are very nice. Third, the giant is phenomenal, all the little details make him pop. If I had to give any type of critique it would be to do some flesh tone glazes over the tattoos so they look to be under skin, rather than warpaint. But that may just be what I am getting from the photo. But I say that knowing that I am not a good enough painter to be telling you how/what to do. And what method did you use for painting the body hair on the giant? How thinned were the paints, what colors, etc? I hope that my critique didn't offend you, or point out something you had already planned.

i need critique so i thank you.
yeah the tattoos ned to get some covering colour i havent really figured out how i want them to look once done yet though.

the bodyhair was done by applying every single strand of hair individually usng three different browns, scorched, beastial and graveyard earth from the old gw line, i might have added some black to the scorched as well to get some really dark ones. i didnt water them down much more than usual, you need control over them så that they dont run away haha. once that was done i used a really thin glaze of graveyard again i think to build up some brownish shade so to speak surrounding the hairy areas its most noticeable around the belly.

    cheers.

Thanks for the quick reply. I may try it on my Empire Amber Mage, he has a bare chest that needs something.

you dont want him to look like a 19 year old surfer??

i would try it out on paper before applying it to a mini though, for practice.

Ha! Nah, with a beard like his he cannot be some hairless freak, needs to be like me, a burly human that blurs the line between man and primate!

But I will try it on paper first, I always do that before attempting a new technique and ruining the mini! Thanks for the advice.
