Default SDE Custom Hero Sculpt - First Time Sculptor

Hey, everyone. I was so happy with the outcome of this (being the first time I've ever touched two-part epoxy at all), that I felt the need to post it. You all don't know what I look like, so you won't recognize my jacket and beard and hat, but this is a custom Super Dungeon Explore mini I made of myself. The rules are just a static clone of the Hearthsworn Fighter, but the mini is all me. I don't have a decent photo setup just yet, but that's probably okay... while I'm happy with the way this turned out, it's clear that it's not a very sophisticated sculpt... I left more fingerprints than I'd have cared to.

Working on the custom card art now, hopefully that will be up soon.

It does look a little rough in the pictures but I'd imagine it looks ten times better in the hand. I like his attitude. Do you have any pictures of the unpainted sculpt? I'm probably not the only one who'd love to see it.

Fingerprints are the bane of us all. Eventually you'll learn a little finesse, gain a more delicate touch, etc, which will help eliminate the issue. You'll get faster, leaving more time for smoothing before the putty cures. Colour shapers (rubber/silicone tipped tools) help lots too, if you haven't picked up a set yet and you've got the sculpting bug, I'd highly recommend them.

That's a really nice sculpt! It keeps very much with the style of SDE, and as quieti says, it's got a bit o' attitude on it don't sweat the fingerprints - they're easily fixable with practice. For a first time sculpt this is aces

Wow, hadn't thought of the rubber shapers, I think I would have imagined that it would stick to the epoxy. I'm using a set of stainless steel wax carving tools, but I'll definitely pick up the rubber shapers as an additional tool. The mini of my wife is next, and it will be trickier - female anime-style models are harder to pose, and I'll have less bulky accessories to hide behind.

Thanks for the tips and comments, everyone - I'm definitely excited to gain some skill at this.

They can stick a bit, but it seems to stick much less compared to the stainless steel and wooden tools I have. Don't make the same mistake I did and think you need every size and every shape in each soft, firm, extra firm. I'd only suggest the mini set (size 0) and maybe a flat chisel and round taper in the size 2, firm or extra firm. You may be able to track them down at your local art store too, that's where I got mine and the price was about the same. Plus they had all the size 0 stuff individually, so you don't have to get a full "set"...but sadly I haven't been able to find the extra firm anywhere at all around here.

G'luck with the female model. Can't wait to see what you come up with.

Here's a shot pre-paint, for proportion/scale comparison with an official SDE mini.

It may be a little rough, but to me (I suck at sculpting) it looks great. So well done, it looks like it fits perfectly with SDE.
