Thread: On the hunt for a cameo (no, not Word up!)

Default On the hunt for a cameo (no, not Word up!)

I figured with lots of sculpting types here someone might know...

I would like to have made, for a friend, a cameo pendant... but instead of this type of thing...

I would like a predator head... I would really like to keep the materials proper.

Can't help you with the predator thing but I must say that I have long appreciated a well done cameo. There's something etherial about them....almost ghostly.

Sculpting it in pure white Fimo should imitate the white agate quite nicely if care is taken when baking it. Though I think the "best" approach would be to find a clear epoxy putty and give it a slight tint of white for that exquisite milky feel.

There's some mini's out there of not-predators. Can't recall where I saw some ropey ones, but Heresy has a good un'. It's head is possibly too small for a cameo though.

I've mucked around doing these but my skill is sub-par. I do them in wood and Tagua nuts (vegetable ivory). It might be hard to find ivory to get carved, bone is easy enough (large bones from the pet shop), antlers aren't too hard to find, shells are everywhere but I think the problem there would lie in finding someone with the knowledge to do the work in that medium.

If you get it sculpted, it would probably be a mix of white and translucent polymer clay that gives the right look, maybe with a touch of sand/tan/etc if you want an aged look. Although, I guess you could get it sculpted in any medium if you were going to get it cast in porcelain or alabaster.

Cast in metal, as a keychain, might be a cool idea though.

If you decided to go down the FIMO / polymer clay sculpt may I recommend the services of the talented Andrew May:

Don't know what his prices are like but he's a nice guy and a first rate sculptor. He's based in the UK.

Good luck and be sure to share the finished piece if it happens :-)

It would be for a friend jewellery maker so the material would need to be carved down and not built up and I always thought cameo's were made of shell and not ivory. I think, as has been said, the problem is going to be finding someone with a skill set of carving a shape out of the material. It would still be really interesting to see someone's take on it but hmmm...

Mask on, mask off... it's all good as both looks are unmistakably predator.

all tasty food for thought. cheers.
