Default Grey Knight Strike Squad Feedback

Hey guys, I finished my grey knights a couple of weeks ago and it was finally sunny enough to get some good photos!

Would like to know what people think. I know they are dusty. I might try cleaning them up and getting some better photos later. I also think maybe the light is too bright on them? It really shows up the brush strokes like when using a flash, which isn't an issue when looking at them other than possibly on the swords where due to lots of blending the paint layers built up unfortunately.

    Thanks for any comments!

just one thing that struck me immediately was the thickness of the paint. i tend to dilute the any metallic colors with water to get a smooth consistency. try even a few coats of thin paint to get a better coat.

in addition, try to but a bit of shading into the armor as well, particularly the joints of the armor, where it connects and any crevices. i would personally use a black wash. i think this would really enhance the miniatures

i think you made a good start on the weapons, depending on how detailed you want to go, try using a thin wash to blend the colors together

various techniques will come to you the more you paint! i would encourage you to keep practicing, depends on what standard you want to go to that is

    good work!

    thanks for the comment.

Yeah the thickness of the paint is an issue on these. I ended up painting the metallics 3 times as I couldn't get the blue & black wash over them right and it does show. Even without multiple layers it's still a key area I need to focus on.

I was a bit disappointing with how the black came out. I've done what you said but it either seemed to pool forming black blobs or hasn't really shown up (nuln oil). I may give it another go as I've not had that happen with models in the past . The shading has come out a lot better on the back of the modes however as well as the terminators i'm painting right now so i'll have them posted soon!

To blend the weapons I just used skull white, ice blue and regal blue and a lot of brushwork and water. My skull white really needs watering down to avoid thickness of paint for the future. Perhaps a blue wash over would help?

I am learning as I go, I've got a lot more to paint (and repaint with everything I've painted over the last 15 years or so lol)! I'm really aiming towards the lower range of an 8 by the end of the year. I think that's a level you can get to with solid painting and basing skills, without going into serious freehand skills that I will need someone to teach me one day!

you mention nuln oil hasnt really shown up. With the previous incarnation of GW washes (badab black), you needed 2 or 3 layers to see much effect.

Well I reckon you have the skill. Just take more time with thinner paints and you'll get there

@me_in_japan I finished my Badab Black pot on the first few attempts of getting them right lol. I will ensure to add more layers in the future in thinnier layer thanks!

@freakinacage Thanks Taking that advice now painting Brother Captain Stern. Just finished my first layer.

I agree with Mr Inacage. Thinning those paints will help tremendously.

Hey guys, an update on my latest work:

    Grey Knight Terminators

    Brother Captain Stern

I've tried thinning the paints, the swords have still come out pretty thick so needs work, but the rest is looking a lot better I think (still not perfect).
Worked a fair bit more on shadows and highlighting as well. Only really not happy with stern's sword. I wanted him to stand out and painted it seperately a different colour but it doesn't really seem to match the rest of the model. Maybe I should have kept to a blue but with a brighter white glow, or maybe a red? The sword hand needs more blending as well by the looks of the photo.

Anyways think i'm improving? Hope i'm slowly getting there!!
