Thread: Muted yellow shading - which color(s)?

Question Muted yellow shading - which color(s)?

    Hi all,

I'am loking at suitable paints to shade the old GW Iyanden Darksun yellow tone, which was a nice muted yellow. I use references from GW, Vallejo and P3 paints, but getting access to P3 is difficult from France, so I'd rather rely on your advice and suggestions rather was taking chances to order online, only to find the tone isn't right. This will be used on my vehicles airburshing projects.

    Many thanks!

I did an eldar army using GW iyanden darksun, shaded with GW orange ink, do not know if they make it anymore. Here's a pic :

any yellowish-brown can be used to good effect.

so things like: plague brown, snakebite leather (not a really muted color, but still good, if you want to mute it, then mix a bit of grey in it (codex grey)), scurflous brown (muted orange-brown color).

or you could try with a neutral-brown like graveyard earth.

You looking for things to mix with the yellow to darken and dull it or a colour to use directly as a shadow colour for it?

If you're going to be mixing, then grey can work quite effectively; even a basic black + white mix will do if you don't have any greys already.

Depending on the grey you use and how much you add the colour may go a bit greenish looking - when yellows are dull enough they will tend to look slightly green (without actually becoming green) because of an optical effect - but regardless of whether the hue shifts or not don't worry about it, just adjust the colour until you like the look of it. Simply add in a dab of red or orange to compensate.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I've used GW Tau Light Ochre as a shade, the result is OK.

scorched brown or whatever the new equivalent is works well for shade as it has a slight red tone which goes well with yellow.
