Default Painting a Landsknecht bust**pic heavy**

While Alice stares at me 99% completed I thought I would start on this big fella. He is a 200mm bust with a lot of opportunity for trying new things. Here is what I am doing with him. His face is so amazingly sculpted I wanted to go for a portrait style of realism on it. I typically go for higher contrast so this will be difficult for me. The other thing is trying to simulate a kind of embroidery pattern on his jacket. I saw a neat little tutorial over on planetfigure.com that made me want to try it, I plan on doing the hat with the same pattern. There is still lots do to on his coat and the rest of the bust. Here is the progression so far in a kind of SBS, let me know what you think.

Looking good so far. I just saw that same SBS today and was thoroughly impressed.

I like what you've done with the face. Are you going to anything more with the ears? They look a little one dimensional. I think they would benefit from some of the tonal variations you've used in the rest of the face. Other than that, keep up the good work and I look forward to seeing your progress.

thanks Cassar and Bailey. Bailey; The ears are just the basecoat color. I wanted to wait for the hat to be put on before deciding where to put the shadows.

So far so good, I'm not sure if I like the orange yet or not atm its a bit jarring with the other colours you've used. Personally I think it'd be better going for a more beige type of orange, more neutral in colour. That again depends on what colour the shirt will be and the feather. Loving the colour on the underside of the hat.

    Beautiful work.

For what it's worth, I quite like the orange - it sets off the tones in his face nicely, and frames the white shirt.

From strength to strength ! Oils or acrylics?

Very impressive, as always I should point out - there she is again nagging, nagging - that the transitions on the skin tones are a bit too strong, specially on the side that the hat is lifted.

Thanks for following along on my new project. Thanks TEE & Mega. Skraal; The Landsknechts were goof balls and wore some really flamboyant dress. I want his clothes to be jarring because that's how they would be in his real life. Thanks MIJ for putting the two together, the shirt will be white. I can't decide if I want to do a faint pattern in a brighter white on top of the shirt. 10; oils for his face, the rest is acrylic. Alexandra; I don't think it is nagging, you always give me valuable input. The transitions photograph differently than in hand. It may be because of the oil paint or something, I'm trying to sort that out.

Thanks again guys. I have more pics of the start of the hat and near complete embroidery of the jacket later this afternoon. I hope you have a chance to take a peak at them.

Here is what I got done last night. I started the pattern on his hat (man that is a big hat) and added lighter dots of purple to the jacket trying to simulate the nap of embroidery. Let me know what you think.

Did some work on him this weekend. I started on the shirt and adding some dirt to it. I also painted some texture on the inside of the coat.

Thanks Andy and Bailey for staying with him. I forgot to take pics of the full pattern getting painted on the hat and the start of the feather.

I haven't forgot about Alice either, I worked on her a little more this weekend too but not as much as I wanted because the weather has been so nice here. 70 degrees in November must be exploited.
