Thread: Airbrush thinning mixes

    Default Airbrush thinning mixes

What mixes and ratios do you use to airbrush with the new Citadel paints?

If you use alcohol what kind do you use and how does it work with the new Citadel paints?

If you use alcohol with acrylics, then you are asking for problems. I'm not sure how it should even work, but my guess is; not well. I use water to thin citadel acrylics, even when putting through an airbrush. Many recommend milk like mixture. It could be a bit thicker, but the thicker it is the quicker it will block the nozzle. And painting with too thick paint isn't very good idea anyways. It is best that you test your mixture first to see if you need to add more water or more paint. Also the pressure has something to do with the end result. I use about 18-20psi with citadel acrylics.

You use straight H20 or do you use any additives, flow aid, liquitex airbrush medium, etc?

Car screenwash (the blue one) and thin to the consistency of semi-skimmed milk, nothing else added. Always mix in separate tub, not in the airbrush and then pour into the airbrush cup through some gauze/mesh, I put my screenwash into a dropper bottle for ease of control. Getting the consistency right is something you'll achieve with practice (there isn't a magic ratio) and you'll learn you've got it right by tilting the tub you mix/thin in and seeing how it adheres to the edges and flows. In all seriousness get a small glass of semi-skimmed milk and compare

If you're using water then try and get some RO/distilled water as it will contain less minerals than tap water.

I generally spray 5 ~ 10 psi without any problems.

Loads of prior threads on airbrushing with various tips on dilution ratios, why you can't rely on ratios, whether to use just water, an airbrush medium or some custom mix; well worth having a look.
