Default GW to phase out Specialist Games (Necromunda, Gothic...)

    Hey guys...

The UK GW stores posted on their Facebook pages that they are 'removing items from their Specialist Range'.

Since GWHQ decided to shut down their corporate FB page (too many unsatisfied customers flaming them), the stores now individually spread 'the word'.

In Germany, the Specialist Games have been gone from the stores for many years now, don't know how that was handled in other countries (likely the same?).
So if you ever thought about getting a necromunda house together of boldly go where no Gothic spaceship has gone before - get your stuff now. ^^

Those e-bay prices have just gone up again!!!!

On another (similar) note: Got my regular GW e-mail yesterday (they are still sending me the German language mails, just because my last order was to my german address!) Looking for store managers for 'planned' stores in Austria and Switz.

Children of Austria and Switzerland beware!

Well that was only a matter of time since GW have actively dropped support for the games 'instore' for years, despite the high popularity of Bloodbowl.

Since GWHQ decided to shut down their corporate FB page (too many unsatisfied customers flaming them), the stores now individually spread 'the word'.

    * If there are too many unsatisfied customers flaming them then perhaps they should start to take note instead of burying their corporate head in the sand.
But they are too wrapped up in their NEW target marketplace (CHINA) to care.
I've a really bad feeling that they will find that this is an apple that they shouldn't bite into.

Being in China for the last 10 years, then seeing the first GW shop opened in Shanghai almost 2 years ago, I would say that it is not an easy job to open a shop in Shanghai, the rent are really expensive, and people don't know GW, don't know miniature and wargaming. The start was difficult... But Chinese like to discover new things, they start to understand that GW is really famous abroad and word is spreading and here things are spreading fast... So now they have a small but growing customers base, people start to spend in entertainment stuff, which was not the case few years ago... I saw father buying for 500USD of GW WH40K space marines to the 6 years old kid who was barely interested, I think that the father was more interested than the kid. People don't know anything about what GW did in the past years, price increase, closing down independent internet stores, etc... So it is like a new life for them. But it is not an easy one and the path is still long in order to have sustainable business and incomes in China.

The problem here is that Internet is the main retail space, everything is going through internet... I buy stuff online on a daily basis, all my colleagues do the same, everything is delivered the next day for less than a dollar... when I say everything, it is really everything, you have online supermarket called "yihaodian", you just pass an order you can get it next morning... Then you have Taobao, it is a large ebay and bigger then ebay, million transaction a day, you can find any products especially from the "grey" market like stuff not allowed in China, baby powder milk, computer parts, mobile phone, clothes, perfume, etc... and miniatures, copies and real stuffs...

Then there is my point, China has the capacity to copy anything, when GW will grow, people will get interested in their products, but kind of expensive stuffs for most of the people here, especially for a piece of plastic sprue (I can hear my wife saying it). So more famous they will become more copy will circulate, they have to go online in order to sell to the mass, they need to be fast. But they are afraid to lose the control. Here, it is really difficult to close a Taobao shop selling fake stuff, one close down, 10 are going to open. It is the rule, you need to differentiate yourself with good pricing (with promotional offers during public holidays, they love that, etc...) and good quality and people will respect that and continue to buy from them, if it is too expensive with low service then people go buy fake stuffs. The problem here is what is considered as expensive?? they might not be able to go too low, so they need to differentiate themselves differently than what they did abroad, and I think their service can save them, but they don't really have one right now, like organizing events, competition, painting lessons, keeping a group of kid during one afternoon teaching them how to play, supporting local gaming club providing some playing table, etc... this is costing money so... Even in a booming market like China, they might run into trouble if they don't change their way of doing and for that they need to think as Chinese people do, if not the apple will get bitter...

I believe that any other smart miniature company based on science-fiction stuff with easy gameplay can simply overrun them in a short time if they do it correctly and according to Chinese business way of doing, selling online, with short painting free tutorial videos, gameplay demonstration videos (all in chinese), advertisement in the metro, no brick and mortar shops, but organizing events and supporting local gaming clubs. Anyone want to go for it?

Boubi; You've itterated my concerns perfectly.
GW need to research their market correctly and work WITH it and not apply their own brand of Marketing strategy.

No specialist stuff in Australia for more than 10 years. I was playing Necromunda when it was new.
And what Really happened to Warhammer Quest?

For me, their path from the company I loved to what they are today started with the relegation of these games to a "specialist" state. Time was they'd release a game or two a year, sometimes it was one of the core games and sometimes it was one of these. Essentially a supplement to the core imagery. They injecting a shot of adreneline to the hobby as it was then. It was a fun period filled with "wheeeee" rather than furrowed brows trying to retain relevance.

With their ostrich-kung-fu stance (bury head in sand) getting practiced and mastered, they've stepped further away from their old maxim "build the hobby". Become insular. Ignoring how the world and its forms of media evolved. Led by accountants rather than hobbyists. No longer developing games and setting the standards. They appear to be actively pushing themselves further from relevance to the wargaming and painting hobby, to willfully pursue a path to fossilisation and being regarded as a late dinosaur. The people that made GW great are now in other companies. GW's time in the sun is over.

Sad. I was once a rabid fan. The mid-80's to the millenium were glorious. They didn't need to do much to retain interest but fallen short of that target. They've let us and themselves down. Now I'd not piss on them if they were on fire. I might sell them water, if they don't use the copyrighted "water" word, and sell them it at an inflated price depending on the country, and in a bottle requiring to be sent back a dozen times to find one that isn't riddled with miscasts.

Doesn't surprise me though does make me sad. Rumour is that Bloodbowl is going to be re-released this year as its the 25 year anniversary so if they pull it off the website that does add more credit to that rumour.

It'll make me sad if Battlefleet Gothic goes away. I'm enjoying painting little Tau spacecraft.

Course, eBay has been my source so far. Might have to do a Forgeworld order. Think I've got some Xmas money left.

Just what I need. An excuse to buy more to paint. *casually tries to pretend theres no huge Bones box coming*

With the release of Bloodbowl as a video game I would not be surprised if they discontinue it as a miniatures game altogether. I wonder if they have the same plans to eventually convert Battlefleet Gothic to digital media?

the rumour is false, the fake gw Facebook page called gw fulchester has spread it and set the internet aflame. it's false, straight up.

except that other sources also said it's true. And they called the GW-support to ask the same question and even there it was confirmed.
(same for FW: all models that go together with epic or BFG will be gone and not made anymore)

Maybe GW just got rilly good at marketing, all of a sudden. They certainly just got 20quid out of me (an inquisitor space marine) based entirely off this rumour. They should put around a rumour that they're mothballing 40k. They'd make millions!

I found myself on Forgeworld's website today, via a link in another post asking about the appearance of a figure, and decided that I'd just wander over to my favorite little corner, the Battlefleet Gothic pages.

ONE product was NOT sold out. Assault boats. That's it. Everything else was gone. And I'm starting that itch in my fingers, which usually is satiated by a purchase. I've reached for the salve, and the tube is empty.

I guess there was a mad rush based solely on the rumor.

EDIT: And because of curiosity, headed over to the Epic 40k. Decimated as well.
