    Default Webmonkey's Garage Kits,...

Heya Guys,.. I'm new here and thought that I'd introduce myself.

Hi,.. I'm Phil. Some of you may know me from the Wyrd forum pages. For those that don't, I thought I'd come share some of my work. I'm not near as talented as many of you on here, but I think I do ok. Anyways,.. here's a sample of my work. (and terrible pics, as always). I'll be uploading more as time goes by.

As always, comments encouraged,.. constructive critiques appreciated.

Wow, this looks like an illustration right out of Gearhearts! My only comment would be to darken the shadows in the hair a bit more. Other than that, the photo background could be dealt with a bit better. I know, photographing the larger scale kits is a pain- but at least you managed to get it lit and in focus really well!
    Cheers!

Well,... to that end,.. here's some redo's on the photos. I've been trying to dial in my photo skills. After all, the photo can make or break a mini,.. regardless of the quality of the paint job.

    Hope you enjoy!!

And then a bit of a sneak peek of my current work. (alas,.. free-handing,.. bane of my existence!!!!)

Your photos are getting better already and your painting is very clean and good for this style of mini. The dude with the dagger looks very cartoonish with all the black lining kind of reminds me of killer 7 from the Wii. Very Cool.

Thanks for noticing!!! The black-lining was done on purpose, specifically to achieve that look. His name is Kakashi Hatake., and he's a main character in the anime series "Naruto". Here's how he looks in the anime,..

All in all,.. I think I got him pretty darn close.

Did you do the sharigan eye on Kakashi? Can't really tell because that's the one looking off into the distance... and it'd be tiny.

    Wait - you're hand-painting these? You're a madman.
    Well done!

Yes, I did the eye. (Regular sharingan, not mongekyo). It also comes with another head with the bandana down and covering the eye. Also has another set of arms where he's holding his book.

And for reference, these models are all about 10 inches tall.

And sort of,.. its a combination of airbrushing and free-handing.

    Thanks guys!!!

I have to say, the forum people here seem to be nice enough. The voting on the gallery is a bit harsh though. I thought that some of these would do better then they have. I wasn't expecting 10's,.. but 4's and 5's are a bit rough.

Welcome to the other half of CMON. Try not to get too wrapped up in scores - they're horribly arbitrary and often whimsical. You could take two identically painted minis and get scores that vary by a point or more.
Photography is a huge part of the score as well - a lot of the highest scoring minis are professionally photographed with expensive equipment, and usually ran thru photoshop as well before submitting. (Not suggesting cheating via PS, but certainly color adjustments, brightness/contrast adjustments, and background shenanigans)

Scores can be skewed. They can be harsh. As long as you are happy and continue to paint and learn, don't sweat the scores. The WIP thread is where the useful stuff is

Nice work. I like how you brought some of the color from the fur into the shading on her skin.
