Thread: GenCon Tournament

    Default GenCon Tournament

I'm very disappointed, there were 7 of us sitting around waiting for someone to show up to run the tournament and no one ever showed up.
I still love this game, and think Ted is great. I'm trying very hard to not join the ranks of those on the kickstarter that have nothing but negative things to say about CmoN. Can't believe that you would have people that love your game sitting around waiting for you to stand them up.

Hmm, lots of people have viewed this thread but no comments.

I know it takes a village to make a game.

So, despite Ted's vision and driving force (his imagery + unique gameplay design is what's attracted me), we do need to hear from others in the village...

Hopefully it was just a minor snafu and free swag was had by all :-)

Well I stopped by the CMoN booth this morning to ask what happened. First guy I asked didn't realize there was a Rivet Wars tournament, asked another gentleman who rolled his eyes. I was then told the Eye roller would find some answers for me. I watched as he walked to the other side of the booth and started selling Kaos Ball to people, never making any attempt to ask any other CMoN employees.

I gave up and walked away feeling very unappreciated as a customer. I guess the several hundred dollars I invested into this game wasn't enough to be treated properly.

There was no free swag to be had for anyone. Just a disappointing end to the day at the Con.

I don't see any Rivet Wars events in the Gencon events list. The only CMON events I see are for Dark Age, Sedition Wars, Wrath of Kings, and Zombicide.

There were 7 of us with event tickets so it was listed at some point. Not sure if it was canceled and no one bothered to tell us. I know as we were sitting there waiting we were able to find it on the digital program.

The hall had table space assigned for it as well, so if it was canceled they didn't get notified either.

Looking at my GenCon account those event tickets are no longer listed. Leads me to assume it was a very late cancelation of the event. Or GenCon's system removes events once you have reported the GM was a no show and got your refund.

If it was a late cancelation having that explained to me by CMoN would have been nice, still would have sucked that I set aside that time for the event, but atleast it would have been better then getting blown off.

As an event runner in the Steampunk community this is a nightmare to me, and it enrages me. This kind of blatant... uhm... I guess forgetfulness? It is true you never know what goes on behind the scenes, and I guarantee once Ted catches wind of this he's going to be furious, however something like this would be a nightmare for me at an event I was helping with or running. And for it to be "dealt with" so.... sadly? So unprofessionally? Odds are the comon people at the booth MIGHT have been Legionaires, which means they would have limited information to begin with.

From a player/customer side, I would be enraged. Incredibly enraged. I would get my refund but I would demand compensation from the event coordinators. I mean... it's GENCON! I have paid to go. There could've been so much MORE to do. *sigh*. As a player, this will deter me from planning on participating with any con tournament that I, explicitly, am not running and/or helping with.

Thanks for posting this. I assume that in time you will get a PM and/or a reply to this thread from either Comon or Ted. Understand, however, it'll take time. They need to read this. They need to get mad/concerned, then they will contact the proper authorities and await responses and then figure out what to do.

I'm very sorry to hear about this. I know how precious everyone's time is. Gencon is once a year and you can only play so many games and stop by so many booths. The fact that you all chose to show up to play Rivet Wars is fantastic when there are so many other events going on. We have all worked hard as a community to improve the tourney rules and any chance to get to try them out at an event is great.

At this point I can only apologize to you all for the event not going off. I had a Sunday morning flight at 7AM so I wasn't around the booth that last day to discuss this with anyone. Thanks for posting this here so we all know that there was a problem. I've contacted CMoN and once I get a chance to talk with them we'll work out what went wrong and figure out how we can avoid similar situations in the future. We can only work harder to regain your confidence with future events by showing you all our continued commitment to the community we've all worked so hard to foster.

Thanks for your support of the game and again I apologize for this event not happening.

    Hey guys,

I too have to come in and apologize. Sorry for the delay in the response, but I had to track down exactly what happened. It appears that our person running the event went to the wrong set of tables. Actually we had a very hectic Saturday due another one of our events taking longer than expected. Because of all of this, we were very scattered and unaware that the game master wasn't at the correct tables for the Rivet Wars tournament. I am very sorry that we wasted so many people's time and that you didn't get a chance to play in the tournament.

I know it isn't the same thing as getting to participate, but if you'll send an email to Spencer@cmon.com I'd like to try to make it up to you as much as possible.

Again, I am very sorry and I hope you'll send me an email so that we can discuss making things right. Thank you.

Obviously we are concerned and embarrassed. We take Rivet Wars very seriously. In fact, so much so that it is the only game that we took 2 massive props, 1 tank and 1 landskrieger, and staffed it with awesome looking cosplayers so that Rivet fans know that we are in this for the long run. We didn't even do that for Zombicide, our best selling IP. What I can gather is that since we didn't pay for the event space, our events were kind of scattered and had to share tables with other events, and Gen Con being what it is, there are a million moving parts at any given time, our game masters or staff might have been at the wrong place. This happened also with the Sedition Wars Lights out event. We were set up right next to the Dark Age Immortal event, and no one showed up. Good thing we waited because the event was sold out and the players eventually figured out that the event might have been moved to the Dark Age area.

What done is done, we cannot rewind time, but for those that showed up, please pm or email spencer and he will send you a gift to compensate for your time and disappointment. As for the future, we will purchase dedicated space in the gaming hall for all CMON games so that this won't happen again.

With that said, Rivet Wars was very well received in Gen Con and we are currently at the final stage of preparation to start shipping out Wave 2 of the kickstarter to US and ROW backers!

Wow. See, I told you when replies came, they'd be good ones. Thanks for the direct responses, guys. It means a lot as an event coordinator and a customer that you took the time to address the issue.

And as for you M2 Wolverine, I can only apologise for whoever brushed you off. I hope that he was a volunteer instead of an employee as I cannot imagine any of our employees would have done that. The fact is, we go to these shows to rally our customers and play with them, it is absolutely not our intention to miss events.

Not acceptable. I was running Dark Age events most of the time, with our volunteers running the Sedition Wars events next to me. However this happened, be assured it won't happen again. As borg said, we're getting dedicated table space for the future, so our events aren't scattered and randomly placed throughout the hall- everything CMoN will be in one location.

Thank you all for your responses, I appreciate your comments and will contact Spencer. Seeing the Rivet Wars stuff at the booth was one of the things I was really looking forward to before the con and it did not let me down, the presentation was great.

Thank you again for addressing things.

I went to dragoncon last year and CMON staff acts like they are somehow above you. I understand there are volunteers etc and there is a lot of activity and all but at the time they had not many people in their booth and I am pretty sure I have seen those same guys in a few of the vids. I was like wow, what jerks. I don't even remember which one but remember thinking at the time, wow that guy was in the videos so he is actually a main staffer.

I have no idea why they are that way but they need to work on their image.

Just wanted to pop in and say that my experience at Adepticon was nothing like what Wolverine and Smoth describe. I don't doubt what they say, just saying maybe it was a fluke or a bad day for communication or what have you. I found the CMoN guys I met to be really down to earth and approachable. There was a little confusion as to who was running the second tournament due to someone having an obligation but it got worked out in a timely manner.

I think we need to remember that these things are pretty crazy and draining and the CMoN guys are only human.

I was one of the other people there, I contacted CMoN as well a few weeks back, and they said they had a "care package" and asked for my KS pledge #. I have it too them but nothing since. I hope this care package isn't slowing my pledge from being delivered. Have you had any response wolverine?
