    Default Debating Final

    Hey.

My team has recently made it into the senior debating finals and our topic (moot) is:

That government is too serious a matter to be left to politicians.

My team is for it (afferming).

Does anyone have any good points for our side?

    Anything at all?

this might work better as a heckle, but you might be able to use it.

How can anyone take a politician seriously when the only thing that they are serious about is getting re-elected? Since when has getting re-elected been an act of a responsible government?

If a government is serious about governing they will probably only see 1 term anyways...but that\'s just my opinion:D

Well I think that the following quotes will sum up politicians accurately:

Under every stone lurks a politician.
    Aristophanes (450 BC - 388 BC),

You have all the characteristics of a popular politician: a horrible voice, bad breeding, and a vulgar manner.
    Aristophanes (450 BC - 388 BC),

Now I know what a statesman is; he\'s a dead politician. We need more statesmen.
    Bob Edwards

Since a politician never believes what he says, he is quite surprised to be taken at his word.
    Charles De Gaulle (1890 - 1970)

Government is too big and too important to be left to the politicians.
    Chester Bowles (1901 - 1986)

Anyone who is capable of getting themselves made President should on no account be allowed to do the job.
Douglas Adams (1952 - 2001), The Hitchhiker\'s Guide to the Galaxy

Get all the fools on your side and you can be elected to anything.
    Frank Dane

Ninety percent of the politicians give the other ten percent a bad reputation.
    Henry Kissinger (1923 - )

The reason there are so few female politicians is that it is too much trouble to put makeup on two faces.
    Maureen Murphy

Politicians are the same all over. They promise to build a bridge even where there is no river.
    Nikita Khrushchev (1894 - 1971)

I once said cynically of a politician, \'He\'ll doublecross that bridge when he comes to it.\'
    Oscar Levant (1906 - 1972)

An honest politician is one who, when he is bought, will stay bought.
    Simon Cameron (1799 - 1889)

It is the duty of every citizen according to his best capacities to give validity to his convictions in political affairs.
    Albert Einstein (1879 – 1955)

Crime does not pay ... as well as politics.
    Alfred E. Newman

Man is by nature a political animal.
    Aristotle (384 BC - 322 BC)

Politics is made up largely of irrelevancies.
    Dalton Camp

Politics is the art of looking for trouble, finding it whether it exists or not, diagnosing it incorrectly, and applying the wrong remedy.
    Ernest Benn

Being in politics is like being a football coach. You have to be smart enough to understand the game, and dumb enough to think it\'s important.
    Eugene McCarthy (1916 - )

When the political columnists say \'Every thinking man\' they mean themselves, and when candidates appeal to \'Every intelligent voter\' they mean everybody who is going to vote for them.
    Franklin P. Adams (1881 - 1960)

The problem with political jokes is they get elected.
    Henry Cate VII

Nothing is so admirable in politics as a short memory.
    John Kenneth Galbraith (1908 - )

Politics is not the art of the possible. It consists in choosing between the disastrous and the unpalatable.
    John Kenneth Galbraith (1908 - )

The word \'politics\' is derived from the word \'poly\', meaning \'many\', and the word \'ticks\', meaning \'blood sucking parasites\'.
    Larry Hardiman

Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.
    Lester B. Pearson (1897 - 1972)

Politics is war without bloodshed while war is politics with bloodshed.
    Mao Tse-Tung (1893 - 1976)

Politics has less to do with where you live than where your heart is.
    Margaret Cho, weblog, 01-18-04

Nothing can so alienate a voter from the political system as backing a winning candidate.
    Mark B. Cohen

Politics is the art of the possible.
    Otto Von Bismarck (1815 - 1898)
Politics is the art of preventing people from taking part in affairs which properly concern them.
    Paul Valery (1871 - 1945)

In politics you must always keep running with the pack. The moment that you falter and they sense that you are injured, the rest will turn on you like wolves.
    R. A. Butler (1902 - 1982)

Politics is largely a matter of heart.
    R. A. Butler (1902 - 1982)

Politics is perhaps the only profession for which no preparation is thought necessary.
    Robert Louis Stevenson (1850 - 1894)

Politics is not a bad profession. If you succeed there are many rewards, if you disgrace yourself you can always write a book.
    Ronald Reagan (1911 - 2004)

Politics is supposed to be the second oldest profession. I have come to realize that it bears a very close resemblance to the first.
    Ronald Reagan (1911 - 2004)

And personally I think that the last quote says it all. Sorry for the length of the post but maybe it\'\'ll help (or not).

    Thanks Dragonsreach.

Very much appreciated. I surfed the net for quiet a few jokes and quotes etc., but didn\'t find any of those.

As a matter of fact, those are so good, that each member of my team will include some in their speeches. Thanks again.

One of the quotes is even rock on.:flip:

    What is a \"legal\" war?

Many people think America is a true democracy. This is a fallacy. America is a Democratic Rebublic.
I personally think as slimy as most politicians are a true democracy would be far worse.
Imagine the time it would take to enact anything if you had to vote every time.
Think about how the vast majority of people do not investigate the issues, their major source of information is the media, and as bad as some politicians are I would rather them lead the country than the media.

I think politicians are meant to be there as scapegoats, right now all the angst is focused on them.
Imagine the strife amongst ourselves if there were no politicians. No longer would it be party vs. party, it would be citizens vs. citizens.

If only politicians are involved in government then you lose alot of good opinions. Just because someone isn\'t a politician doesn\'t mean they don\'t have intelligence enough to understand government issues.
See if yall can expand on that.

not to start a politcal conversation....

Trying to add to the points for the debate... quivers at dragonsreach\'s post... that is a lot of data.

    anyway...

Politicians tend to be socialist or facist. I don\'t know know why but they constantly counter balance one another. It is through that balance that we get things like government help... and not the government living our lives for us. And things like tax breaks for students starting out in college but not for the entirety of their college carreers(think of those folks who spend liek 20 years in college)

However, if we didn\'t have the politicians fighting over this and that pety thing and platform of re-election they would better adress the issues. I personaly think that the people are too ignorant to rule themselves. They need a person giving them some direction. However, politicians will weasel their platforms on things like race or gay marage:rolleyes: that is not adressing important issues. that only adresses what people WANT TO HEAR. So that is a point that may be useful.

I hope I was helpful.... /me looks at the dragonsreach post.. I probably am not that helpful. oh well

    postcount++;:D

That is a rather heavy statement, and I think one that is developed from theviewpoint of the American Bi-polar political system.

Most European countries have multiple variants of the Left-Right wing parties. The UK has Conservative (Rightwing), Liberal Democrats (Middle or the road) and Labour (Leftwing).

However the differences between these parties in the UK\'s political agenda have blurred so much, that policies are as easily ascribed to one, as the other.

The real problems I see with the Political machinery is that it is no longer a \"Peoples voice\". It is now down to making the voters believe in populist policies which will win the election and not necessarily be the best thing for the country.

We have too many \"politicians\" who have campaigned on a basis of \"Getting Britain out of the European Community\" and no other realistic policy.
What makes me angry about this is that the Elected representative for this \'party\' to the European Electoral Assembly was a former Labour politician, who became a Day-time \"Oprah\" style TV chat show host and was sacked for making Racisct and Bigoted comments.

I make no bones about the fact that I have adopted a Socialist stance in regard to politics, but I am dissapointed in far to many politicians to ever have any faith in the elected assemblies of any country.

wow, that sounds like jerry springer becoming a politician.

correct, I only have this country to look at. I hope that after I graduate I can find a good job in another country so I can see how they work :D. There is so much egocentrism in this country that I really want to get away to some other country where I can be away from all the nationalistic garbage.

A little bit of advice from someone who has traveled extensively.

Idiots are idiots no matter where in the world you are.
The real problem is there\'s just so damn many of them.

Name one thing that the Government does well.....

Now, compair it to a privatized company.

Which is more efficient and profitable?

    Need an example?
    Lets take adoption.
Private firms rate themselves on the number of kids they get THROUGH the system (that means that they get them adopted...)
Government offices run and are graded/based on the number of kids IN the system. Where is the incentive?

I am still waiting on a politician to retire and brag on the number of laws that he got repealed instead of the number that he got passed.

    (closet Libertarian rant off now)

I am still waiting on a politician to retire and brag on the number of laws that he got repealed instead of the number that he got passed. That would make a great deal more sense.. Elect someone on the basis that they intend to repeal all the out-of-date stupid laws, then retire.

Isn\'t it strange how many people are disturbed by their lack of faith in the electoral process.

    To quote Robert Heinlien:

\"Democracy is based on the idea that 1000 people know better than One.
Dictatorship is based on the idea that One person knows better than 1000.
Just run that past me again, I\'m not getting either one\"
(From the notebooks of Lazarus Long)

Well I find your subject very strange, I mean first of all if you\'re going to answer no to it you\'ll need a vaible alternative, because going against a point of view without having a solution to propose isn\'t even proper debating.
Now what would you propose as a solution, the question implies no change of the political system so I\'ll asume you\'ll be talking about the amercian political system. If you don\'t leave matter to politicians you\'d have to leave it to somone els, but wouldn\'t that person become a politician once elected ?? ( or do you not consider reagan a politician). So in the current system you\'ll always end up leaving politics to politicians. So you\'d have to change the system, but what system would you go to ? True democratie ( the closest having ever been done beeing athens), then you\'d be letting politicws in the end of everybody, probleme is with so much people it\'s not possible to put it in practice. So you\'d have to find some over system wich puts non politicians in charge of politics.

The Other thing that bothers me with the subject is that it implies that politicians are jockers of some sort, or that they don;t take politics seriously, wich is wrong in my opinion. I mean the subject is not about politician beeing good or bad but about them beeing serious, and if I did understand corectly I find that a very bad subject.
Well hop I managed to say what I wanted, not sure I always manage to do that. But I\'m having lots of fun discussin at the moment, since I\'m taking philosophique classes, and talking a lot about politics since I\'m going to try and pass the admission test for a school of political studies :D

And since we\'r in political talk if anyone feels like helping me answering that \"Is all politic a strugle for power\"
