Thread: Where are everyone?

    Default Where are everyone?

It`s kind of strange, that `top of the week` works getting there with 15-20 registered votes average. Wassup, CMON? That`s looks like a serious activity reduction. Actually, this is not a bug, but looks strange indeed...

This seems to be a general issue which basically comes down to the fact that not enough people can be bothered to vote compared to the number of images that get posted. A few years back all images posted would get to 50+ votes after a few weeks. Theses days unless you get into the top last 7 days listing you would be lucky to hit 40+ votes after 52 weeks......yup a whole year. Considering that you need to get 50+ votes on 5 different postings to actually get a ranking it's hard to see how anyone relatively new to the site would actually get a ranking unless they can average >8.5 on each posting.
What you leave behind is not what is written on your tombstone but what is written in the heart of others.

Yeah, I've noticed the same thing. There are a couple ways to increase your exposure (and number of votes). Being the in the 'top last 7 days' will certainly do it. If people post their work and then add a link in the 'discuss submission' part of the forum that will help get more votes. Or, if you're active on the forum and having a running work in progress thread that can help get more votes. But, overall, hitting that 50+ vote threshold if you're not scoring 8.5+ is difficult.

As for the number of registered votes, as opposed to just the total number of votes, it's mostly the same issue. I've also noticed that while I may be logged into the forum, when I got to the gallery sometimes I will have to log in again just so it recognizes my account. I often don't bother so my votes may end up in the regular pool instead of the registered votes count. I'm not sure if this happens to other people or if it's just me.

But this problem isn't limited to CMON. Even on sites like Putty and Paint (where they only allow registered votes), unless your piece makes it into editors choice or the popular section, you won't get that many votes.

I get similar problems, the system doesn't always seem to understand if I am logged in. It's not much of an issue, but can be a pain if I use my phone for CMoN.

What surprises me, is the ratio of votes vs views. Many submissions have hundreds of views, but only a few votes. Meaning people look, but do not bother to vote. I find that weird, while I do not vote on all that many submissions, I vote on almost every submission I look at.

    Absolutely.
I find it very disappointing to see some images with 1k+ views and sometimes not even 100 votes.
Even if you don't like the image much, at least vote - we're not even talking about comments, just a simple click between 1 and 10, not that much effort, is it?

Talked to my Nephew last wee, and he too, follows links from FB or other sites, looks at the image and closes it without voting. So I asked him why, but he just shrugged his shoulder - simply can't be bothered.
Disappointing for the artists, and hard for new and unknown artists to get their images found, as they will have a hard time showing up on the New and Noteworthy.

Maybe some pics that go into the gallery should have the option to vote closed, such as the ebay auctions or the pictures submitted only for advertising purposes.
Maybe the voting requisites to enter into those categories you are referring to should be changed in some manner.
But I am too new to compare to "past years" since I am only 6 or seven months old at this site, so I just suggested some ideas.

It seems a bit out of sync that users have to basically campaign like middle school election (please please vote for me! <link> <re-link> ) to hope to get to 50 votes. Seems that number should be reduced to better fit with actual amount of people voting. Maybe 50 was more reasonable at another time for everyone but it seems like it's more of a hindrance now than a help to assist the statistics of the score or prevent sniping or whatever reason it was originally set at that number.
My current WIP thread. Always looking for critique. Also vote on my Gallery if you're bored

please no, it would make everything worse.
50 votes is not that hard if you have a few friends and advertise or other forums too (can be even better with a FB group).
    What I usually do:
    - wait until I have 20-30 votes (normally it's easy even for 8- entries)
    - tell about the new pic here, forums (normally 50 can be reached this way)
    - if not there is the fall-back of familty/close friends/co-workers, but they usually misinterpret it as giving a 10, which messes up the average(gets higher), but at least help with the last few missing votes.

    --------------
I don't know about adjusting the number. it's pretty grim to me, that in 7 Billion people there is not 50 ( 0,000000714% ) who views and votes on a site that's supposedly the worlds biggest/most known site in this.

    --------------
this also doesn't help: "You have voted on 3775 out of 217836 minis!". quite a lot of people are under 1000 in this case, so not even the 3775 as in the example.

I agree. I am struggling to understand why I spent four hours taking photographs of my work and uploading it. On the surface, it appeared that I would be able to see where I ranked among all 9,446 artists but with the 50 vote minimum and the low volume of votes (as mentioned above) it's doubtful I will ever know.

The other goal of joining the site was to get feedback, comments, and/or critiques; but it seems that there are only about a dozen WIP threads with the same 20 to 30 people that get any activity. The rest just fade away.

Currently, I paint Warhammer stuff for the people that don't have the time or talent to paint their own and don't have $1,000 to spend on an Army. I paint them as a hobby, so most I give away or sell cheap at local hobby stores. A few go on Ebay. I do realize that a lot of them have been done so many times before that the veterans here have no interest in seeing them or voting on them.

I have stacks of GW kits that I bought on close-out from two local war game stores that went out of business. Soon I will get tired of painting Warhammer stuff and move on to higher end models and dioramas that will most likely get the attention and votes but by then I will most likely have given up on CMON.

Best I could say is start a w I p and help others by commenting on their work and point out what they need to do to get better...I have a serious following because why ,well I'm an upfront do right guy who glorifies good work and delicately points out where improvement is needed when necessary...other than that I'm thankful so many seek me out for advice and equally thankful this massive following of good folks help with the u wanted number of sabotaging 1s and other garbage that just cannot be stopped.basically treat others how youde like to be treated and not an action less.

Oh showing up on New and Notable doesn't even guarantee a lot of votes. My last entry was on there for quite awhile. I am still sitting at 46 votes. I think I gained 4-6 votes by being on the front page of CMoN. Yay for me.

Perhaps if you want to post a submission, you need to vote at least 100 times. That's not asking much. Plus it will keep the trash off of CMoN's gallery(mini by mini pictures of your entire space marine army, painted with basecoat only, on a kitchen table with a fuzzy background). Yes, I mean trash. Nobody wants to see that garbage, and it interferes with people that actually put time and effort into their work. Hmmm...no wonder votes have gone down. "Where are everyone?" is right!!!

By the way....hehehe...you can vote on my 46 vote count, previously featured on CMoN's New and Notable miniature, here:

Well, I have voted on 1328 out of 217813 minis. So I still have lots of work to do!

And by the way Bloodfather your miniature has reached the 50 votes! and it seems that it continues to gather more

I left you a big fat comment and two 10s. Well deserved. Haven't seen you around here much Klaus but you surely have skills with a sculpting tool!

Thanks to everyone for putting me over 50. That's really all I wanted, don't care how low I am scored. Thanks a ton ladies and gents!

I'm fairly new to the site and have a WIP which helps my votes. I'm reasonably active in posting but I also use other sites I have more longevity on and post links there. It helps me get the 50 in a couple of weeks, with a little luck.

    Thank you guys!
Leaving comments is very valuable feedback!
Yes, the sculpt is rather big - she would be 20cm high (standing) and the raptor is (tail extended) about 40cm long
And applying the skin structure was a Zen-time for sure
    Again: THANKS GUYS!
Comments do help improve, as they point out areas that need attention, to change next time, or things that worked well.

As Bloodfather says it may be good to have to vote a certain number of times to gain access to posting images. One thing that would also help would be some more specifics in the FAQ's regarding posting images. There are bits about size of image and what is / isn't acceptable but there is nothing about posting like a zillion different views of the same mini on individual postings. IMHO it would be better to try and get people to post montages and maybe pointing them towards free software - such as GIMP or whatever- where they can do it.
That would certainly reduce the number of postings and make it easier for them to get to 50+. I would certainly prefer to spend my limited amount of voting time looking at say 50 different entries rather than only 10 different ones posted 5 times each because they were taken at a slightly different angle.

Oh and if anyone wants to there are a number of posting in my gallery that are still shy of the 50+ mark ( don't worry about the tank trap entries though - unless you really have nothing better to do with your time).
What you leave behind is not what is written on your tombstone but what is written in the heart of others.

I agree with the concept that to be in the Top 50 list of artists you need to have 50 votes each on at least 5 pieces. Curious how the multiple views of the same piece factors into this though. Doesn't seem right when you look at the current 7 days and the first 3 pictures are the same mini. It is definitely an amazing piece, but all the other artists have to now paint three of that caliber to rate the same. (unless of course they simply post 5 pictures of the same mini) Someone with the talent to make the Top 50 has no problem getting 50+ votes on 5 submissions.

As far as the general standings go, I am willing to bet that there are 10 times as many members with "You are Ranked 9447 out of 9447 artists" than those that actually have a rating. I would imagine that most people would eventually stop voting once they realize that there is no hope of their own pieces garnering enough votes to ever get rated. One of the best ways to keep members engaged in both the hobby (to keep them potential customers of the store) and on the site is for them to see their rankings change (hopefully improve) as their skill level improves. Reducing, or eliminating the 50 vote minimum for the ranking you see when you log into your account (while keeping the requirement for the Top 50) would accomplish this.
