Very nice work. Voted on them both.

Wow, two years since my last post. When I started Competition Minis, I didn't expect it to become so busy that I didn't have any time to paint. but it did. I finally got a chance to do some painting and get back on CMON. Here is the Seiren bust from Nut's Planet. I just started this on Sunday and put in about six hours. Did a little more work on it today. The base coats and basic color scheme is roughed in and now it is time to go through and add the shading, highlights, and details.

Thanks. I looked at what few pictures of this sculpture I could find, and they were all done in either a purple or blue hue for the flesh. I wanted to do something a little more natural for the skin. Probably the most fun piece I have ever worked on.

While picking out a stand to eventually mount Seiren on, this one grabbed my attention. It looked like it wanted to be a coral reef, so I decided to give it a go. Most of the work was just picking out parts of the natural burl and painting them as either rocks or coral. I added a couple sea urchins made from tiny grass tufts and some clipped flower tufts for other coral. After it all dries, I will do a clear resin pour to put it all under water. (with my fingers crossed)

    Default Fantastic idea

Excellent work on composing the both rock and reef. Great job and a super precise eye in finding this which def replicates a reef!!!!well done Jimbo!!!

Hopefully the resin pour goes well. Just got back from my store and pouring the water. I should know in the morning whether I have a water feature or a new finish on my desk.

Finally finished packing and shipping orders and got a chance to unwrap the base. For my first ever water scene, I am pretty jazzed with the results. I think Seiren is going to look great sitting on top. For the name plate, I cut the Seiren name from the box and floated it in clear resin in a Woodland Scenics rock mold, then ground the sides on the bench sander.

I started this bust over two years ago. I have started and stopped many times. Painted and repainted. Stripped and started over. Last weekend, I decided to give it another try to see if I have learned enough to do it justice and call it done. (for now) I uploaded to the gallery this morning.

    Thanks.

They are an interesting pair as Marilyn took the longest of any piece (two years) and Saladin was the fastest (two days).

I am hoping that this year takes me to the next level. I have always had a problem staying with a project long enough to do my best because I rush to get it finished so I can start something new. I decided to commit to a couple competitions (MFCA in May and NOVA Open in September) and attend some painting classes. (Andrea Miniatures in Texas next month and NOVA Open in September) The goal is to see what I am really capable of if I put in 100%.
