    Default MrJim's ADD WIP

Yes, the ADD stands for Attention Deficit Disorder. I say that because I have never been able to work on a single project from start to finish. I am currently working on a Warhammer Giant, Reaper Cloud Giant (not liking this one), a set of Harlequins, a Lizardmen Bastiladon, a Chaos Chimera, and just finished a Necrosphinx. My DSLR setup is at my store, so I will be taking the WIP pics with my Nikon Coolpix then take the finished models to work for the final gallery pics.

Here is the first entry. The Warhammer Giant. I am kinda have two different work streams going on here. I am almost done the flesh, but have been throwing some base coats here and there as I paint other minis and have some spare paint on the palette.

I was actually planning to make the flesh a lot darker but I am too far along to try and mess with it.

This one is almost done. Needs some final details and some work on the base. Decided to go with brighter colors to make sure he stood out on the battlefield.

This is the last piece from the Island of Blood set that I started 7 months ago. After working around it for so long, I have committed to working on it each time I paint. Hopefully, it will see some progress.

    Default Harlequin Troupe

Last up for now is the Harlequin Troupe. This has got to be one of the most fun and most tedious sets to paint. I am not even finished the base coats and I have a new-found respect for the finished pieces in the CMON gallery. To truly appreciate the work that goes into these, you really have to paint some.

Started on my Bastiladon this week. His belly is a lot lighter than it shows in the pics. Going to do him start to finish before starting the lizardmen and solar engine. Still have some details to add and need to do his face/mouth.

on be afraid to try the freehand on a test piece ,you can do it mate I know you can...I was scared to try it but my secret was this I'll share...these all were the first time I did diamond ,now there far from perfect but listen to this if you look at each one there are only an upper leg and an opposite upper vest that have these diamonds.with the legs (most bent back at the knee and most torso backs have a type of Lil jetpack..this enables you to say ok I'll only paint the pattern on the front parts of these areas and as their supposed to fully wrap around they fall into shadows anyway so again use a light pressure on your brush when doing freehand and only draw these lines on the front of the chest/torso and the front of the upper leg thus ending when hitting parts in shadow behind the bent leg eg. Hamstring area and behind the torso...try it you'll be surprised and it's opened up a whole level for my painting, now I'm doing g tattoo work and other freehand not cause I know how to draw but cause I know how to control the brush with a light hand..you too can do this..someone's gotta push you Jim so do it thin coats if you mess up add a little drying retardant in your color when drawing lines this way if your not happy it won't dry fast you can wipe it off and start again...I know you can do this.if I did anybody can...GO FOR IT AND LEVEL UP YOUR PAINTING FOREVER...

    Default more freehand

Since I've done a bunch of those harlequins and believe me Jim I never bought all those lovely models from the harlequin range because for years I said to myself I can do diamond do on them that's why they have alot of free surface area so an artist can do freehand,it's kinda how you paint a Harley so I bought and vowed Ide research and get to it and wouldn't you know not only did I pull it off but each one the diamonds got straighter.and after doing those I have the confidence and the knowhow to try freehand on other pieces.here are some eg.these are the ONLY other pieces ie been confident since the Harleys that although not perfect but made me extremely happy..I'm ESTATIC I forced myself to do those harlequins cause now I'm able to be confident enough to level up my painting in many facets...please believe in yourself ,use the drying retardant and go for it.YOU CAN DO THIS!! ANY PROB I'LL HELP IF I CAN YOU CAN PM ME.god bless.

Thanks for the vote of confidence. A lot of the techniques I used when I was doing model railroad stuff. I have only been painting minis since September 2014. I just uploaded the first ones I painted to the gallery today, so now every mini I have ever painted is in there. They most difficult thing so far was painting 40 clan rats from IOB. Not from a difficulty standpoint, just trying to stay interested after the first 20 or so. Almost felt like a cruel joke from GW. By the time I finished, I knew I didn't want to paint armies.

Was thinking about how to do the pants on the Giant and decided that the pieces sewn together should be the banners/standards from armies he had destroyed. This would give me a chance to practice some banners and freehand where it wasn't critical. Since it will be heavily weathered with blood and dirt, most of the work on the banners will be covered when it is finished. Browsed through the different armies online to create some banners and sketched, then plotted them out. I needed 8 banners, so I sketched out my plan then in the second picture I created a legend and outlined the shape of the fabric on each one. (that was the easy part)

Well here are a couple shots of the pants before I trash them with blood and dirt. It was a fun little project. Just gotta take it slow with the weathering so I don't have to start over. Hard to see, but the green with the skull is striped and the beige with tribal symbol is like a two-toned paisley. (not sure how either will end up)

Moved the High Elf Mage to the front of the line this week so I could finally be done with the Island of Blood set. Played around with some GW glazes and Minitaire Ghost Tints on this one and was pretty happy with how it turned out. Next is the finishing touches on the Giant. He is pretty much done, just not sure which, if any of the little (tacky) extras to attach to him.

So I was shopping for a mini for the Gods and Monster category at the local game store and came up empty, but I did pick up this guy and decided to do a diorama with him. He is actually a really good quality sculpting job. I noticed when doing a Google image search that it looks like most people dry brush him (and use chalky white paint) and lose a lot of the details in the fur. I am going to see if I can manage to avoid that. The second picture is the beginning of the cave. In order to do the inside of the cave, I covered the wood block with double-sided tape and I am assembling the main part of the cave structure so it can be removed (hopefully) to give me better access to the inside. Anyway, here is where I am so far. Also started another diorama, but the first pictures are at work so I have to wait to get them in the right order.

Forgot to add: The name of this piece is going to be...

'ice to see you, won't you stay for dinner?

So one of the network cables at work fried the other day. Of course, I replaced it and threw the bad cable in the trash. After walking past the trashcan a few times, the wheels started turning. "Wait a minute, I can make a tree out of that" I thought; and grabbed it out of the trash and started to work.

Here is what has evolved so far from our random network failure:

After the Gorilla Glue dried overnight, I gave it a good coat of Liquid Green Stuff as well as a little regular green stuff, then hit it with black primer. Also started on the base. (some pine bark nuggets glued to a wood plaque)

Next, I gave it a good coat of Agrellan Earth (Citadel Crackle Paint) and mounted it to the base with green stuff.
