Next, we fast forward a few hours. Base and tree have been painted and are ready for vegetation and details.

Still not sure what mini is going to go on this. Been through several ideas, ordered a few minis, but no decision yet.

Here are a couple ideas I have been considering. Not sure which way I am going to go yet. Ordered the first two minis. Gonna wait until I get them to see how they work space-wise.

The cave for the Yeti is starting to shape up. Got the base started and hope to have it mounted, if not finished, by the end of the day. (or week)

Starting to add the detailing to the base for what is going to be Alice in Wonderland. Lot of plants, mushrooms, and flowers to make. I am waiting until the base is finished before I put the leaves on the tree. (don't want them in the way) As inspiration, I am looking at a cross between the Johnny Depp movie and the EA game.

really like both the female minis there, think the sitting down lady would make for a nice serene piece with the tree. I think both your tree and cave look amazing too

Thanks. I ordered the first lady with the swords, but my order showed up without it and the invoice marked Refunded. (though it has been a week and hasn't actually been refunded) The elf dude turned out to be way too small for a piece this size. So I decided to do Alice in Wonderland. I am going to do the Mage sitting on the steps on a smaller base so she doesn't get lost in the piece.

Kinda slow at the store today so I started working on the nameplate for my Alice in Wonderland. (the one with the old tree)
Will be using the Steampunk Alice and Clockwork Rabbit from Guild of Harmony.

The name plate and tree look bad ass.

What kind of snow did you use for the yeti cave? It is very realistic looking to me. Did you get the pine nuggets at a craft store? I could see numerous uses for those in our hobby.

Thanks. The tree is getting leaves, but I want to wait until the base is finished so I don't mess it up.

The snow is from Games Workshop. The pine nuggets came from Home Depot. (they have small bags inside with the house plant stuff)

Both of those bases are awesome Mr Jim, love the tree base works well . If you are going for an Alice theme some bright colours are in order , what are your thoughts on contrast between the figure and foliage .

For Alice, I am going to do kinda tame colors. Basically the blue and white from the original Disney movie. For the base I am going for bright and colorful, something similar to this picture I found online. Already started on the mushrooms (from a Citadel basing kit) and some of the plants and flowers (most of which I am making by hand)

Getting toward the finish line on the Yeti diorama. Still need to add some scrub plants and the final round of snow to fill in the seams. The damn trees bled through the snow too, so I have to redo them. (should have made my own like I usually do)

For the snow drifts, I use either the Games Workshop or Woodland Scenics snow and mix it with Elmer's Glue so that it is thick enough to stay put with just a little bit of dripping. As soon as it is all in place, I sprinkle it with more snow, let it set up for about 15 to 20 minutes before blowing off the excess.

Been making a little progress on Alice in Wonderland. Here is an update on the figure (to get an idea of the colors I chose) and the base. The base is about 2/3 done, then I will put the leaves on the tree. I will try to get a better picture of Alice tonight. Wife is out of town so I am running the store by myself this week and have to head in now.

Are you planning striped on checkered tights ?

  18. #38

Thanks. I still have about 20 to 30 more flowers and plants to add.

The socks and whatever the cloth on her arms are called, are going to be stripes. I am thinking about either pink and white or light and medium pink. The color on there now is just a base coat that will end up being the shaded recesses when finished. There are some raised diagonal details on them that should be highlighted in white, so the light/dark pink is probably the way I am leaning.

I am trying to make her as innocent looking as possible (aside from the gun she is carrying of course). Kinda like "sweet little Alice goes back to find that cat"

Brought a little better camera home from my store today to get a couple shots of the weekend's progress. My DSLR has to stay there, so the best pictures won't come until I am finished and can take it in for photos. Alice has been base coated and the basic color scheme applied. Still lots of work to do. The base I think I am calling done. I took a picture of Alice in front of a green screen and used a little digital editing to place her onto the base to give an idea of what the final piece will look like.

Almost done "Alice Returns". Just need to touch up some of the flesh and add some highlights to Alice and it will be ready for the gallery.

Will be doing a Japanese Garden for one of my next pieces so I started working on the curved bridge that will go over the koi pond. The bridge deck was made using thin strips of plastic and balsa wood. The plastic strips were laminated by taping them one by one (think I used five) to the outside of a quart paint can and layering super glue between each. After the glue cured, 1/16th inch balsa was cut in strips and laid down as floor boards. The trim pieces were then cut, glued, and clamped overnight. Next will be trimming and finishing with epoxy putty. Then it will be on to building the railings.
