Seiren is to the point that the only thing left is the face. I am thinking about waiting until after the painting class at Andrea in April in hopes that I will learn enough to make it even better.

    So...

I started a new project yesterday. This will be the most challenging thing I have done so far. I saw in the paperwork for the Capital Palette at NOVA that there was an award for Creative Expression, so I started thinking about some new twists on old themes. First was going to be a swamp scene (which I may still do) with Dark Sword Miniature's frogs. I laid it all out on paper and it was cute, but not quite the "Creative Expression" that I was looking for. So I spent a couple hours going through the showcases in my store looking at all the miniatures for inspiration. Still no plan. Then I went through our website category by category and found myself coming back to the Scale 75 Casualty Toll over and over. It is a moving piece, but had been done so many times by far better painters than me so I needed something to make mine stand out. I gave up and went home at the end of the day and had a few beers, then it hit me.

The Civil War soldier sitting on the stump with his list of the casualties and the ghost of his brother standing behind him. The piece will be called "Brothers". The sitting soldier will be painted in color with the ground work all in color as well. His brother will be done in a pale grey scale and the ground work on the back half will be done in either black or grey. I didn't have a miniature that was posed correctly, so I had to cut the arm off of a different model and attach it to him so his hand could rest on his brother's shoulder.

I did a quick cut and paste in Corel to see how it would look. He is actually going to be on the left because I can't get him close enough for his hand to reach the shoulder. Got lots of green stuff work to do before they are ready to paint. The pics below will give a general idea of the project.

Great idea Jim. Soulfull and poignant, suits the figures well.

I'll love to watch this unfold.

It takes a really long time for Green Stuff to dry, so I guess I will have to wait until tomorrow to primer and start painting. So I played around with the base a little this afternoon. Not ready to commit yet, but this is what I was thinking.

Great concept for a scene... and I really like where your going with the base!!! Can I suggest as an idea, instead of attaching a printed plaque to the plinth, possible get the word burnt into the timber ? Would possibly give it a real historical feel ? Just an idea

I will have to see if there is a local company that can do that.

The only thing I would note is the background photo you've used. If you're honouring the soldiers, I'd advise against a picture of corpses on a battlefield. Maybe if there's a cemetary or photo of soldiers in mourning?

A couple other projects I have been working on. The tank is a 1/35 scale model. My first ever. I recently joined the local chapter of the IPMS after being invited by several of our customers. Figured I would give it a try. The diorama is a couple pieces from Dark Sword Miniatures. I started the female warrior and dragon a couple years ago but couldn't figure out how to mount them without them getting lost. I tried a canyon between them with a rickety rope bridge between them, but it just didn't work. Next was lava, but I couldn't get the lave to look realistic enough. I also considered doing rapids, but again they got lost. (figures too small for the size of base required) So my latest effort is thin ice. Still need to do some work on the ice and more ground work. There are also 12 other projects on my desk in various stages.

I started on the Brothers vignette Sunday. Got some of the base colors roughed in on the first soldier. Tuesday is my half day, so I hope to make some good progress then. Also, here is the base so far. The back portion will be grey scale and the front in color. I am going to paint in the grey scale as I paint the second soldier. (since I will be using the same paints)

It's been slow going. Don't get much time to paint. Managed to get a little more done on the Brothers.

Finally got a chance to do some more work on the Brothers piece. For the last week I have been experimenting with oil on a couple of the first busts I ever painted. (really crappy ones with nothing to lose) Nothing worth sharing yet on those, but I managed to get the Brothers to about the half way point and decided to do a dry fit and take a couple pics. Now you can see the concept taking shape.
