    Welcome to TheLost WIP!

So I've been on CMON for a little while, mostly to admire the amazing and inspirational work of some of my favorite artists like Bailey03, Milosh, 10Ball, AlexiZ, Crackpot, and so many others. In my humble opinion, the work of these artists is nothing short of inspirational.

I've been painting on and off since 2009, and have posted some pictures of some of my older stuff to get involved in the online experience of the miniature painting world. I even, by some miracle, made it to the New and Notable page for a day with my last piece http://www.coolminiornot.com/pics/pi...9819141e76.jpg

However, I decided it's time to start my own WIP page. I have never really been someone to share things online, but thought this would be a great opportunity to share my joy with this hobby. Most importantly though, I want to learn more about miniature painting and would like to become a more skilled painter. I would love to share my miniature exploits with the CMON community, and along the way, learn how to actually paint.

    And thus, the journey begins...

My latest work is Ghost from Game of Thrones, made by Dark Sword Miniatures, one of my favorite miniature manufactures. The idea of this piece was to show the wolf in a simple winter scene.

Here's how I built the base.

I started with a square piece of bass wood and burned a corner down to give the base depth (learned that from MassiveVoodoo). I made the corner for the cliff structure by gluing 2 pieces of polystyrene to the top of the base. The cliff structure was made with milliput standard yellow; rocks were used to stamp in the texture. The icicles were made by melting clear plastic rod over a candle (thanks youtube). I actually stamped the icicles into the milliput before it dried so I could attach the icicles seamlessly after painting the base. The snow effect was done with crushed glass from Secret Weapon Miniatures and water effects from Woodland Scenics (thanks Secret Weapon Miniatures for the tutorials). Grass is from MiniNatur.

The freehand of the label is supposed to look like the symbol to the Night's Watch with some blood splatter. I know how bad it looks, but that really is the best freehand I can manage at the moment. Again suggestions on improvement would be much appreciated. Until next time, happy painting!

Hey, welcome to the WIP forum! First off, I think the base is great. Looking at your scenic piece with the house, it's clear it's one of your strengths.

As far as Ghost goes, what stands out to me immediately is the pale nose--if you look up pictures of white wolves, their noses are pretty much always black. It looks like your picture might be a little bit dim, so it's hard to tell how much of the mini is true, bright white, but as it is it looks like it could use some additional highlighting on the highest points. If things are too white already, maybe consider glazing with a little more ivory or gray?

I think the Night's Watch symbol would be completely fine if you just went in with that parchment color and brought the feathers and beak to just a sliiiightly pointier point. It's a really neat detail.

Yep black nose with a tiny speck of pink.

Hi mate, first of its a lovely base, really well done. As for Ghost, Reference is king. Have a look on the Internet and you will see a multitude of different pictures. I've just done a quick search and the most obvious thing from the reference is white wolves aren't really that white. Most have warm tan around the features, belly, sides etc and various shades of greys and blacks. There's also a few cool pics of wolves with ultra icy blue eyes which would make a really nice focal point.

I forgot to mention that the wolf isn't done yet. I still have to paint the claws, mouth, teeth, eyes, and nose. But thanks so far on the suggestions. I was planning on stripping the wolf and starting over with a more bone tinted white for the fur. I'll definitely check out some reference pictures. Thanks!

Nice job on the base. The snow looks like a mix of ice and snow. (great job) Once the wolf is done this is going to be a really nice piece.

Hey everyone! I found something amazing on ebay/online that I thought some of you might want to know about. I swear, sometimes late night shopping leads to some really amazing finds.

So for everyone that pretty much can't sculpt (LIKE ME) I found this website called http://greenstuffworld.com/

They sell some sculpting tools that can make pipes, wires, ribbed pipes, tentacles, and so much more. They even have plastic rollers that have brick designs, runes, wood planks, broken ice, and others, that can be rolled over a variety of putties to create a consistent, indented design. I'm probably gonna get some of these tonight!

Also, they sell A LOT of steampunk stuff...though that's not really my thing...

    Hope this helps, happy painting.

is looking good so far to me. the base is really nice. good progress on the work to, I agree that it needs a little more work n the hair tips with hi lights and getting a bit more colour in there as suggested will work wonders I reckon.

    nice work though.

Sorry for no updates lately, but I am finding ever decreasing amounts of time to paint at the moment. So far though, I stripped the wolf and re-primed it with Tamiya grey primer to start the new color scheme. More coming soon.. I hope.

Finding time to hobby happens to all of us. No worries. Looking forward to your 2nd round on what was already a very nice piece. I think the only thing I might try on the parchment/night's watch symbol is try to get a little more tan/brown tone to the parchment. Some light glazes. Right now the brighter edges seem a little to close in intensity to the rest of the parchment.

Hey everyone! I finally finished my wolf project on Saturday. I know it's not the best quality work, but I'm still learning. Painting white was harder than I thought... It'll be a long time before I get to level of Bailey03 and some of the other masters on this site. Any constructive criticism is appreciated. Time to start my first bust for the Gods and Monsters competition... Enjoy the pictures, Happy painting!

nice one, looks much better for the rework. more depth to the fur, nice tidy painting too. I'm not very good a paying hair or fur so cant really offer much feedback or critique on that, but it looks good. the base is very nicely done though.

overall a very good model, nice work.

Hey everyone, I know it's been a while, but I'm finally starting my next project which is for the gods and monsters contest on Webmonkey's thread. I picked the Grail Maiden bust from Morland Studios. I've never painted a bust before, so any suggestions would be great.

Here's a picture of the model. It's taking a while to clean up the resin. More to come soon. By the way, does anyone know how to get rid of the double post of pictures?

Oh I love that one, Morland was it? You have to go into advanced and got o manage attachments and do it that way. Sometimes you can copy paste driectly from paint too

I started on a side project, since I am getting frustrated with the bust. I wanted to try some simple base sculpting. The base to this piece came off of a column piece I have. It was way to big for the column, so I cut it off. I thought it would look good for a small display mini. Here's what I have so far.

    This is the base before...

... and the base after... I used magic sculpt to sculpt some flagstones.

Here's what I plan to do... the wall piece is from figone, and the mini is from Reaper. I thought I would have it look like the mini was guarding an entrance.

Hopefully I'll have some time to paint this soon. Comments and criticism welcome. Thanks!
