Like I said, I added a bit of darker green around the edges of the light, to increase the contrast between the lit and not-so-lit areas. In my opinion, this is the biggest problem with people trying OSL, is they make the lit areas light, but don't immediately drop off the value around the lit area.
That doesn't mean that the rest of the model needs to be pitch dark, just that you have to fake the effect that the light is brighter than the direct surrounding area by forcing that area a bit darker. I hope I'm explaining this right...

The airbrush is so directional, only the parts that I pointed it at got the white ink

Someone else was asking out of the blue about this model and its OSL on IG (didn't recognize the account), which is why I asked, cheers!

need some help... how would you paint the trees to look like the environment is an old/haunted forest? I'm thinking dark brown washes over some kind of grey undercoat?

I am thinking even darker with coal black for most of the highlight. Use the gray of the headstone for the brightest highlights. I am thinking of the forest from Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow.

Like KruleBear said, I would go with a heavy gray pallet. Wood as it ages turns gray, so a dead forest isn't shades of brown, it is all grays. With the only green usually being the grass and low weeds that grow underneath. Unless you want to make it a muddy ground, then you could use the heavy browns there? Having the tombstone as light gray would really focus it as the attention center for the base as well.

    Thanks guys

I think I'll base it with a dark brown-grey and uses darker washes for the shadows and lighter brown-grey mixes for the highlights... will have to avoid any really light colors.

Are you going to marble paint any of it? I've got a small cemetery statue I want to do, but I haven't looked into it too much yet.

Really good looking work on the base there.

Finally had a tiny amount of free time to paint... time is so limited, and I am not practicing nearly enough, and it shows. Continuing the base painting on the duskwarden piece... painted the trees and some of the rock... was going for a dark, dead look for the trees. Under the correct lighting, I'm actually happy with them... but the picture quality isn't good. Not happy with the main rock the model is going to stand on either.. I think there's something wrong with my scale 75 paints... always coming out grainy and super thick or super watery. Can't figure it out. Anyways, here's the picture...critiques welcome!

For what it's worth, I think it looks great. But I am not always happy with my own work, so I understand your frustration.

As for the problems you have with the paint; I don't have any Scale75 paints, mostly army painter, but no matter what I always add an agitator (little steel ball) to whatever pot I have, and add a little flow improver before shaking the bejeezus out of the pot.
If I don't, the army painter paints especially might come out too thick or too watery, because they separate a lot even if I only leave them alone for a day or two.

Much appreciated... I gotta stick with this... I know it's not gonna look great, but if I finish it, it'll be the first mini I've finished in 4 years!!

Soooo..... I know I'm supposed to be painting, but my Dominion box came, and I caught the converting bug over the weekend.. planning on converting a squad of five Vindictors into a squad of grim dark paladins/templars or some rendition of Stormwind Guards from World of Warcraft... BUT... need help deciding on which shoulder pads to use.. got one version with a MKIII space marine shoulder pad and an eagle shoulder pad, and another version with a pair of MKIII space marine shoulder pads. Can't decide lol

Pushing forward with more building projects...can't wait to paint this to be honest...

I got a 3D printed mini a little while back, and thought it was too poor quality to paint to any decent standard. So, instead of throwing it out, I decided to make it into an old, weathered statue that I'll probably use in a graveyard diorama.

Started off with a piece of rectangular wood for the base structure, glued it on top of a couple pieces of square plaster, covered it with 1:48 scale bricks, filled the cracks with vallejo textured paste, put on a damaged/weathered "plaster" top coat using miliput, carved some breaks, added the plastic bits, and finished it with some dust/dirt accumulation. Purposely broke the sword too to make it look like the statue is falling apart. Still needs vegetation, but I think it came out really nice!

Loving what you are doing, and it is obvious that you really enjoy the basing aspect!

I have definitely been where you are at, with life taking over and large gaps of time going by without picking up a brush. Now I just try to carve out an hour or so a day to get something done.

    Thanks

I do a little each day too... makes it so my backlog is worked on! lol

Finally finished painting the base.. not happy with it, but I don't know what I was expecting after 4 years of not painting. Still need to add grasses and maybe some webs and leaves. Photos didn't come out that great either... I think I need a smaller light box for miniatures. Comments welcome... would like to improve.

You haven’t lost as much as you think. It looks good to me.

photos I can’t help you with. I feel my photograph skills have gotten worse the last few years.

Is anyone else having trouble viewing older images on this or any other WIP thread? I can't see my pictures from just a few days ago.
