    Default SaintToad's WIP

Hello and thanks for visiting my WIP. I've decided to start one, mostly for selfish reasons...
First, I'm amazed at the generous, consistent, and supportive feedback I often see in the WIP threads of others here on CMON. I don't know anyone in my area who can help me improve my painting, and all of what I've learned from others has come from the online community, here and elsewhere. Greedy for more, I'm starting this WIP. Second, I suspect that I'll be more dedicated in my efforts to develop and complete my projects if I have others investing their own time in my progress! So you see, it's all very selfish on my part.
In all seriousness, though, I'd welcome any feedback you have on my work. I enjoy painting a lot, and I enjoy it more the better I paint. Anything I can learn that will help me improve is appreciated. If you enjoy following my efforts or learn something you can apply in your own work, I'll be very happy for that, as well.
    In short, welcome and thanks.

Here are some shots of a mini I've recently finished. It's Handsome Hennig from Red Box.

    Default Base for Hennig

My first application of enamels... I like the streaking effects I achieved on the ruined statue far more than the ground.

I wanted it to look like a wet northern forest, not a swamp.

The mushrooms are more or less entirely 'painted' with pigments.

    Default Finished Hennig

Here's Hennig with his buddy Bjorti (another RBG dwarf).

Tiny as it is, the snail's still a big bopper. Fantasy!

That's it for Hennig. I certainly feel that he could be improved, but I'm happy with the results I got and the things I learned. Hopefully with your help I can make my next project better still.

I'll try to figure out how to take some decent pictures and load this latest project up to my gallery.

MAXXxxx, thanks again for the advice.
As I'm applying glazes, is it easier/more effective to glaze periodically throughout the shading/highlighting process or wait until the full range of values is established? I'm trying to make better use of the technique (I was pleased with the results of some goblin skin, but threw the mini into Simple Green when I felt that I had gobbed up the eyes beyond fixing...), but it- like a lot of mini painting techniques- are new to me.

looked at your gallery. Your painting is pretty precise.
First step for improving would be pushing the contrast some more (stronger highlights, deeper shadows). One good way is to convert the wips to greyscale and look at them. Here is the one on your best scoring picture:

As you see even though you used different colors it looks very similar.

Second would be some work on the transitions (mostly I base this on the evil priest figure. The green OSL? is too separate from the figure)

    edit: on the WIP figure.
    - Here the contrast is better, but some transitions could be smoothed with one or two glaze of the middle tone.
    - The beard could use one more highlight imho. Not everywhere just on one or two of the most prominent strands.
    - you'd need some small reddish brown glazes on the face to make the shadows stronger and the face more alive. (of course after that some points would have to be retouched with the highest highlight as the glaze darkens it)
    - and an idea that I'd not necessary do, but could be fun to try: one more shadow but with a mix of the current shadow color + a bit of a complementer color (so red + dark green on most of the cloak)
    - and a second fun idea as it's a dwarf: some glazes of red + skin color on the nose.

Thanks, MAXXxxx! I am certainly trying to improve the contrast in my painting, and the greyscale images definitely reveal the uniformity of my work at this point...
