The 5 o’clock shadow on the face looks good.

That face is fantastic StToad, the change in tone between the forehead and chin is great!

Thanks for the kind words. This guy took a while to lift off, but he’s coming along pretty well. Here is a shot with the metallic sections complete & a nifty little jewel in his scabbard. You can check ToadChapel for some more views if you like.

I think I’m learning that the best way to make progress is to plan less and just get the brushes wet. Mistakes will be made, but they’re an opportunity to leave something better than it had been originally. The whole ‘it’s just paint’ mentality can be really helpful. It’s not like your next brushstroke has to be the one that perfects your project. Just put it on there and try to be as honest a critic as possible, without getting down on yourself. Yeah, something like that.

    Have a great day!

Loving this Elvis dude of your's, especially his 5 'o clock shadow.
Even when making mistakes you're learning how not to do it. So you'll think on others ways to do it right. Hope this makes sense?

    Take care,

Bloody brilliant work on the hobbit , he’s looking great. The skin tones are excellent. Very funny looking hobbit indeed, kind of looks like John Travolta to me, you know in pulp fiction kind of look

Thanks for the feedback, guys. I love to hear from you.
Gino, yes, that’s a big part of the attitude, trying to incorporate mistakes in the process rather than fear them as disasters from which there can be no recovery. And yes, you do think to yourself, oh, that was dumb, I should have done it this way instead, and you realize that other painters figured this out, too. Mostly it’s about diving into something and feeling like you can fix it if it doesn’t go according to plan, and remembering that your effort just has to reach your own standard, and doesn’t have to be perfect. It’s interesting, because these last two minis have been my most complete & best yet, but I’ve raised the quality of my painting by risking failure rather than staying within my previous limits. I went to MFCA and saw some incredible work and just tried to be honest with myself about the gap between my own pieces and the best that I saw. Now, I’m not yet able to to paint as well as Matt DiPietro, but I feel like I’m making an honest effort to paint as well as I can. I’m no longer a very competitive person (though I still do feel the stress & excitement of it when I compete), but going to that show definitely revealed a higher standard to me, and the judgement (while inherently subjective to a degree) is highly valuable as a means to distance myself from my own work. I was awarded two bronze medals, and while I felt one piece, in particular, could have received a silver, it obviously wasn’t self-evident that the figure reached that standard.
Chaitic Creations, thanks for stopping by. I’ve heard him described as Elvis, Wolverine, and now John Travolta. And I think they all fit!

Here he is, finished, I believe. I’m waiting on a plinth from a friend of mine. If you see anything you think should be addressed, please do let me know. I’m always eager for critique and feedback.
I might be able to finish another figure before NOVA, and I’ll probably try, but I really want to quit deferring the creation of a viable photography set-up. I take my pictures under an Ott light. This is great for revealing imperfections as I work, but the light is unbelievably harsh and washes out all the color from my minis. I have a little cloth photo booth that I could incorporate into my system, but the installed LED lights shine directly into the booth, creating an even harsher environment than the Ott. My idea is to get some little portable lamps (LED?) that I can put on the outside of the booth, but I want to spend my money wisely. If anyone has any tips or advice for how to get my atrocious photo game up to par, I’d appreciate the help.

Well, I ended up repainting more or less the whole face. I’m not sure if I’ve improved it any, but I think perhaps he looks a little more hobbit. It’s not perfect, but neither am I. I’ll put a few more views on ToadChapel.

Really nice job , although the scruff is coming off as starting to get a purpleish tone to it on my monitor. Great job on the striped pants

Thanks Eki. I hit him with a few fleshtone glazes to address the purple tint. And yeah, there’s purple on there!

Really nice work on Elvis Brandybuck! I think the touch-ups on the face paid off and he looks very life-like. The back of the cloak also has some great tones to it and looks worn in the best way.

    Great progress on the hobbit.

For the lighting put some parchment paper around the light and see if that diffuses it better for pictures.

Awesome work on this St Toad, the skin tones came out great. Love the little pinstripes on his pants

Thanks, as always, for the feedback & support.

I’ve not been entirely idle these last few weeks. Elvis Brandybuck (Thanks Kuribo) is moving onto a base all to himself. I’ve just attached him this evening and next I’ll be adding lots of foresty goodness.

That’s better. Somewhere between the Shire & Mirkwood, ecologically speaking. More plant life to come.

Nice work mate, the greens of the base contrasts well against the yellow jacket.

Thank you for asking but I don't do commissions.

Thanks, bud. Always love to get your feedback.

Here’s more in the way of plants. I painted the moss and added grass & flowers. I’m not sure if this is as far as I’ll go or not. Probably have room to throw a mushroom or two on there.
