Thanks, Sicks. Bit of a happy accident with baking soda! I am really pretty happy with how weird it looks.
Here's a bit of painting progress on the Roman street. My students reminded me today that I wasn't allowed to grant myself an executive pardon on the class due date!!! I had admitted that I had been loafing.

Saint I really like your base work its on a great level better than mine for sure. Your painting style on the chaos dude really reminds me of John Blanche. (His style not the man himself he doesn't walk around seven foot tall with his intestines hanging out)

This has been a difficult day in my country's history, irrespective of politics. The only voices of triumph seem to be calling out for the satisfaction of their resentments, the punishment and humiliation of those who do not agree with them. My sincerest wish is that my own fears prove unfounded, and that those with whom I cannot agree prove to have been wiser than I in this election.
I take a great deal of both pride and satisfaction from the fact that I can share my love of mini painting with Europeans, Brits (it that's a distinction that should now be drawn), Russians, Poles, South Africans, Canadians, etc etc etc, and with Americans with whom I do not share political values. We've individually chosen to treat each other with respect and dignity, and created a supportive environment for all, or close enough to count.
I'm not entirely sure what my point is here, but you all have been a supportive group of friends, though I've never met most of you face-to-face; I do hope that my friends around the world understand that the tide of nationalism which has swept a new conception of American government into office over the last thirty hours or so does not, in any way, represent the measure of my respect for alternatives to the American way of life. I am a proud and stubborn patriot, whose pain today springs from a lifelong love of my country. I am desperately worried about what we have done (friends in Europe have indicated that our decision seems less urgent abroad: I hope you're right), but, for what very little it is worth, I have seen evidence today of understanding and a desire to heal the social, economic, and other rifts that have so catastrophically divided our country. If you're worried about the direction of American democracy, I understand and share your anxiety, but I have no viable alternative but to hope against my own reasoning that the country I have always loved is less politically adrift than I imagine. If any of you can hear the enraged cries of your own country's neglected millions, I urge you to work now to empower their impulses toward civil responsibility before they, and you, fall prey to the same rhetoric and false, even irresponsible, promises that have delivered the presidency into the hands of a man uniquely devoid of experience (I am not ignorant of the fact that it was precisely Trump's lack of political credentials that endeared him to millions of Americans hostile to a system which has, by their lights, failed them). I leave questions of our next president's character to the side: mudslinging won't fix the problem it helped to accelerate.
I certainly don't wish to create the impression that I'm speaking as an expert. I'm not, and I don't find myself filled with respect for the legions of discredited political experts today. Like many other Americans, and maybe some others, I'm confused, and I recognize my own role in what I regard as a failure of our shared democratic institutions (national education, a responsible free press, the primary and party systems, idle or inefficient bureaucrats everywhere). If you find that judgement intolerable, feel free to respectfully disagree with me.
I genuinely don't wish to antagonize anyone who disagrees with me. I apologize if I've said anything that shows my ignorance of your point of view. I hope that we, as Americans and as citizens of the world, can find points of agreement upon which to build a better future for those who will follow us. Nothing will shape the Trump presidency so powerfully, I expect, as the commitment to decency in those who voted reluctantly to accept any alternative, even a man they don't respect, to a system they deem to have irremediably failed.
I realize I've broken with etiquette here, for which I ask your indulgence. These words felt important enough to me to try to say carefully, but in any event to try to say somehow.

Bit of progress here, maybe 90 minutes of work. I don't intend to do anything too crazy here in terms of detailing, nor use anything too exotic, as I want to be able to teach my students how they can achieve some of the basic effects (shadows & highlights, drybrushing, washing, etc) easily and without a lot of specialized stuff. May wrap this up sooner than anticipated.

Adore the wood-grain and the copper doors! A fine model for the next generation of patients who are subject to the Nerd Indoctrination Program. Hopefully someone will enjoy it as much as I did, and transition to the next building with the same burning love I found myself gripped by. Like the Sacred Flame in the Temple of Vesta, I hope the bonfire that you have sparked will last a lifetime. Concerning the previous post, I found myself feeling the same way. In a school full of braggadocios, disrespectful and empty-minded political "experts", I find consolation in the fact that at least someone is feeling the same as I. Thank you for addressing the matter. Well said.

I neglected the previous round of remarks, so sorry for that.
Andy, thanks for your praise of my basing efforts.
You know I wish I could paint 'em like you do! It was interesting to get the perspective of a few others who seemed to enjoy the bases I've done recently, who shaded and perfectly expressed my enjoyment of sort of imagining and creating a whole 'environment', beyond just some well-placed stuff.
I'm actually pretty thrilled with the Blanche comparison, as I have been interested in the Blanche style (and some of his stylistic 'adherents' are great artists in their own right) for a little while now. That influence is probably most clearly visible in the pilgrim figures I did a some weeks ago, which followed and took inspiration from this amazing multi-national collaborative/competitive effort! If you check it out, you'll see the spiritual footprints of Blanche everywhere, as well as the literal ones.

I know the feeling saint, it was much the same in the UK after the brexit vote so some of us feel your pain (not that I wish to open old wounds or say which point of view is right or wrong)

The base looks great already mate, do you have much experience with sci-fi/industrial sort of basing/scenery? Come Christmas I'll have a big project to undertake and of course my brain is convincing me to do something scenic for it so wondered if I might pick your brain about it in the future (it's going to have to be something like 10-12 inches high and 8ish wide so I'm going to have a ton of space for details)

I am also worried by the majority of votants that voted for such an option, but as a majority should be accepted. I at least, hope all the best for my American mates.
Last sentence from Zab express much better what I think about politics.

Thanks for all the supportive words, guys. It helps to know that I, and we, are definitely not the first to experience this kind of newly engaged social force in politics. I also know that surely some of you don't understand why I'm upset, and I appreciate your patience, too.
Sicks, I have far less experience doing sci-fi & industrial, but I'll be happy to offer any design help or construction feedback I can if you think my perspective might be helpful. We can try to figure some things out together, if nothing else. And I am trying to figure out a basing technique that will be really cool in a sci-fi setting!
Andy, the minis/crack observation strikes a bit close to home...
10, I quit drinking entirely over a year ago, but I certainly take your meaning. I think I'll go play games with some good friends all day. We're doing a Fellowship event for the Lord of the Rings CCG today, then giving the new Arkham Horror coo-op CCG her maiden voyage (arrived in stores this week).

Here's some detail work on the street. There's a honey bee on the wall, with a pollen trail flowing across the wall, tree, and one of the pillers. Hopefully you can figure out what is happening, visually. I've painted the shadows under the colonnade using a lot of bright blue, partly to suggest that the climate is beautiful and partly just for a kind of special effect. It did allow me to paint the shadow of a column that doesn't exist, which I like! There is an angle from which the pollen grains all line up across the three different surfaces to form a single, flowing line. I've also got a nice juicy (too juicy, according to my wife) orange (maybe a blood orange?) splattered on the street where someone dropped it. I'm trying to show the technological level, so the sign and the door reveal the use of bronze and iron metallurgy, there is glass work on the sign (tiny glass grapes, which are actually glass stained purple), and evidence of competent goldsmithing on the faded letters (which are hard to read, but which say Bacchus, the name of the store). There is a hidden mushroom, as always! I'm adding more (more animals, for one thing), but I must finish by dies Mercurii, or Wednesday!

Looking amazing, I love all the little details, to me it's calling to have somebody running as though maybe they stole the orange and has dropped it after being spotted.

Re: the sci to base, I'll probably pm you closer to the time with some more details, I'm sure your input will be invaluable even if it's just in the practical stuff like materials, it's for a gw imperial knight (which I'm not allowed to open until Christmas) so there will be plenty of room for little details (I'm estimating the size as 12" high by 8-10 wide and 6" depth) but I don't want to clog up your thread with it and there's still 6 weeks to go til I get the beast

Liking the base, but completely disagree with your political critique.

Don't believe the hype of the alarmists... A LOT of people are totally unsatisfied and disillusioned with the socialist direction this country has been taking over the last eight years. Their triumph is not a call for the punishment or humiliation of minorities, the poor, or the down-trodden. Personally, I find that offensive and belittling. Our opinions should not be marginalized to hate rhetoric; we are tired of being bullied into submission by political correctness. We are a republic, not a democracy, a nation of laws, not men, and quite frankly, very few of our "leaders" recognize that. It is our hope that we return to being a nation of laws, not a nation of political whims.

We are continually accused of hate, yet who is going out into the streets destroying property, running a muck, and interrupting the lives of average, law-abiding citizens, while holding signs that proclaim "Love Trumps Hate"? Who is causing this anxiety? Who is causing the division? Is it the average American that wants to remain free, or is it the politician refusing to stand for your God-given, unalienable rights? Is this your idea of love?

Day in and day out, conservatives and republicans are painted as demonic, hate-filled monsters that care nothing for humanity. There can be nothing further from the truth. We respect the rights and freedoms of all, and grow ever weary of those who do not respect the same. The double standard that exists within our political arena is physically sickening. Career politicians do not remedy the situation either; they exacerbate it. They are not ideal candidates for a government that is supposed to be for the people, of the people, and by the people. Political "expertise," such as it is, does not guarantee qualification.

You are right about one thing though; I can hear the cries of my country's neglected millions - those who are continually marginalized, berated, and demonized for their success and what they've built. Our neglect was channeled into CIVIL, grass-roots political action. Did we ever attack opposition supporters during the campaign? Are we destroying our cities in celebration? I think not. I do not deny the right of individuals to protest or assemble, however, that assembly MUST be peaceful. As you can surely see, it is not.

The best advice I can give you is this; don't depend on the government, depend on God, yourself, and those around you. Institutions made by man and founded in man will inevitably fail you. The beauty of our system of freedom is that individuals have the God-given right to self-determination. No politician or government will ever give you that, but in the pursuance of power, you can rest assured that they will try and take it from you.
