Red face Kumaccio's WIP - mostly Warhammer twisted paintings

Hello everyone, first of all let me introduce myself briefly:
I'm a 28 years old Italian student, I've been introduced to this wonderful world in 1998 when I was just a little kid awed by fairytales and knights and epic stories and blabla, you got it, we are all almost in the same boat I guess.
I grew up painting and collecting those wonderful and expensive miniatures for years, from time to time reading some spare White Dwarf I found in bookshops. Let me tell you it was not quite an easy job to find anything related to Warhammer here in northern Rome, but I managed to keep going. Internet was not yet such a big stuff it is now so there was no way I could even have a connection, imagine to buy online!
Since I was the only kid around collecting and painting I couldnt play the game with anyone so I focused more on collecting and painting. Please dont judge me as an almost 20 year painter though. I had no way to improve my painting in any way, my only reference was the impossible, at the time, comparison with Golden Demon winners or the 'Eavy Metal "painting tutorials". The lacking of colours, brushes and any kind of knowledge of what I was doing, coupled with my early years led me to... nowhere. My parents (their wallet actually) grew quickly unpleased by my collecting frenzy so I slowly slowly stopped collecting and finally took a long break after almost 8 years. Long story short, after a long break I started going back to that childish hobby and started painting back again, which was something I loved doing in those days. I kept taking breaks of several years and going back again at it until in 2012 I met my girlfriend and the passion for the painting rose in her aswell, slowly at the beginning, since much stuff changed for both (we moved in apartment together) and after years of just not having the time we finally managed to start painting constantly since the end 2015 almost. We never painted for so long and it's almost like we started learning from 0. We joined a scale model club (alfamodel club) here in Rome and the hobby turned into passion and almost craving day after day.
I've been following coolminiornot for years now, reading some WIPs of awesome painters and watching some of the best paintings that inspired me strongly to keep going and learn and learn to one day achieve mastering of painting, not to win anything, but to be able to paint and build what I have in my mind.
So far, I focused on Chaos Army for Warhammer Fantasy and Ordo Malleus (grey knights now) for my Warhammer 40k

Sorry for the gigantic introduction, I am sorry if my English is not good but we Italians are in a very complicated relationship with English eheheh

Finally, here we are with my latest WIP:
I had this Imperial Knight around for quite some time and I did not know how to paint it. Since I had some pieces around of Grey Knights army I wanted to mix both to have an Inquisition Imperial Knight or something alike. I had 0 inspiration for a long time, and I almost forgot I had the Imperial Knight at all. One day I opened randomly my Grey Knights army book and looked, as every time I opened it, fascinated at the opening artwork. My gf listening me praise the glorious image once again, blessed be the Emperor, suggested me ironically to paint that holy(damned) image on the massive piece of holy steel(crap) I had under my desk for several month. Since I had never tried almost any kind of freehand, I was skeptical at the beginning, but took it unexpectedly as a challange.
I started with the carapace to see what my skill level would be alike and decided at some point to just do it:

Its not yet completed, I have to fix a lot of things but I'm honestly happy where it is going and I'm proud of it standing tall over other works.
Sorry for the pics, it's just to show the progress so far

Suggestions and critiques are much appreciated.

WOW! That's some great freehand! I should try this kind of massive freehand work one day.
The only critique I can find is that those metals seem to need more work, but as this is still WIP you would possibly have plans for them already.
btw. I love the start(?) of those black craniums on the dark grey "head/neck/collar part" of the "beast".
Feel free to come by my WIP or have a look into my Gallery

    Muchas gracias por tu comento
I have many plans indeed but I would love to listen to suggestions of any kind. I want to achieve a very Baroque style and the contrast between golds and blacks and iconic paintings seemed to be fit to the purpose!
As for the craniums all over the black areas I wanted to hint their presence as if it was fading into the darkness of Heresy. Darkness which is enveloping everything not touched by the holy light of the champions of the faith !! ahaha Would you suggest to pop them out more?
    Thanks again for the interest

They are quite visible now, I see that fading effect, so I would suggest to not touch them till you have the rest of the areas more advanced, so you can judge for yourself if it's necessary or not.
And you are welcome! I like to see other peoples work and give/take advice or opinion if I feel I can help with it. ^^
    Benvenuto!

You want focus on the drawings or the whole model ?

Welcome Kumaccio. I think this looks really good - the freehand is very clean and in proportion. Unfortunately the focal point of the main image on the top - the skull head - is a little lost against all those vents. It might be worth darkening the image to make it stand out more or even (gasp!) blocking up some of the vents to give more space for your freehand.

    Other suggestions:

    - make the background of the main freehand black, not white, to make it stand out more
    - on the other parts, the black is very flat - could use some brocade or patterning to break them up a bit.

Welcome to the forums and your English is great. As the others said, your freehand is awesome. Good to see your work here.

    Hello again!
I couldnt update pics of the Imperial Knight simply because I changed a bit of things I didn't like of it... so here we have a little update, kinda better light I guess:
Carapace, just some little changes to it, still have to decide what to change

    On the pics,..

    1) use a backdrop (it helps limit the focal area that the camera sees)

    2) light from the front (maybe slightly off to one side or the other. a 2 or 3 light setup would be preferred)

Otherwise, it seems to be in focus pretty well. After a few more shots, we can look at camera settings
    It's only a flesh wound!!!
